Bret Baier Birther Report Draws Journalism Ethics Fire
May 23, 2012 12:00 pm ET by Joe Strupp

Journalism veterans and ethics experts are criticizing Fox News’ Bret Baier for treating as credible the false claim that President Barack Obama might not have been born in the United States, with one experienced news person calling his recent coverage of the issue “a complete abandonment of integrity and responsibility.”

With a Straight Face, Matthews Spins: It’s a ‘Fact’ That Obama Is Not a ‘Reckless Spender’

Chris Matthews managed to keep a straight face, Wednesday, when he seriously repeated the “fact” that Barack Obama is “not” a “reckless spender.” Highlighting a seriously flawed analysis by MarketWatch, Matthews marveled, “Every once and a while I come across a fact that just blows me away.”

The Hardball anchor insisted that “federal spending is rising at the slowest rate” in 60 years. Embracing this new talking point, Matthews continued, ” For four years, from fiscal year ’09 through fiscal year ’13, we are heading into, no change.” Except, of course, this isn’t true. As James Pethokoukis of the American Enterprise Institute points out, the chart only works if you blame George W. Bush.

Obama a ‘Little Flat’ in Denver

And 150 people fail to show for fundraiser.

President Obama was in Denver this afternoon for a fundraiser. But the event does not appear to have been quite the success the campaign was hoping for.

According to today’s White House pooler, the New York Times’s Peter Baker, “The crowd was obviously supportive and glad to see him, though the room at times felt a little flat and Potus seemed a little tired after a long day that’s not even close to being over.” (The president has two more fundraisers tonight in Los Angeles.)

Moreover, the campaign announced that the president “[would] headline a reception for 700 at the Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center. General admission tickets started at $500 apiece, though a selected number of Gen44 and Grassroots tickets were available for $250.”

The campaign now says, according to the pooler, that only 550 people showed up

Arizona Secretary of State apologizes for embarrassing state with birther questions

Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett has backed off of his threat to keep President Barack Obama off of the state’s ballot in November and apologized for embarrassing the state with his questions about the president’s citizenship, according to Talking Points Memo.  Bennett and his office have come under heavy fire in recent days for resurrecting the “birther” flap, the belief by some that President Obama was born somewhere other than in Hawaii, a conjecture that has been repeatedly debunked.

In an interview with AM talk radio station KTAR, Bennett said, “If I embarrassed the state, I apologize.”  He said the he is “not a birther,” but opened the investigation as a response to emails from constituents.  When asked if perhaps he was pandering to birthers in a bid to gain political credibility with the far right, Bennett, who is a co-chair of presumed Republican nominee, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney’s Arizona campaign, strenuously denied that he has engaged in a publicity stunt.

He has been linked to MittWitt, Ooops!

Republican congressman from Colorado apologized for saying President Obama is not an American.

Rep. Mike Coffman, who represents a Denver-area district, issued a statement Wednesday night after he was heard on an audio recording saying Obama “in his heart, he’s not an American.”

Coffman said he “misspoke” at a May 12 fundraiser and added that he has “confidence in President Obama’s citizenship and legitimacy” as president. But he said he believes Obama’s policies “reflect a philosophy that America is but one nation among many equals.”

Another apology by Republican foot in mouth disease. Maybe he was smoking crack?

I guess MSNBC’s numbers will go up in September, when the general election really heats up and people begin to pay attention to politics after their summer break. Right now, their numbers seem low.
