JayTN, Nice post but not sure who the charaters and all are so I will just leave it at that.

I sure don’t want to open up all the mess that started last week but just wanted to speak out a little bit about something I just read.

I just read a spoiler thread for an upcoming story on GH — something to do with the storm that some have been talking about on other boards. It just sounds like to me Ron C is getting ready to serve up another baby death story. I hope to goodness I am wrong and two of the characters involved in this I have no idea who in the world they really are. But I still am not going to be ever drawn back into the show over another child that dies. And I know many people are not going to either.

I know many across the boards are already very angry about it.

yesterday many were angry about another story he is copying from Y&R.

I’ll just ask the question and maybe some of you can fill me in. What is supposed to be so great about this guy?

I will admit the dialogue and some of the things look better on what I have seen of GH trying to honor my agreement with MBMom. But none of the stories are compelling to me at all. As I have said I like characters but the main thing that makes me watch is the stories. This guys stories suck big time.

Why is he the darling of the soap press? And why do so many give him a pass when all I see are the same old stories with even some of the same old people that have been featured on soaps and GH for years.

From the spoilers I read the last two days involving one daughter still being mad at her parents and wanting to get revenge against them, now the possibility of another child dying, and another character coming who has a past with Sonny — I would much rather just see another shoot out than watch any of that esp. another mother going through the loss of her child.

The Bold and The Beautiful is the most relevant daytime drama.

It’s the only one that is more ‘drama’ than ‘soap’.

    It is so good.

    The Bold and The Beautiful

GH has gotten better but they are burning through story fast, although not fast enough for some of the plots. With luck some of the demo audience will be back with summer break.

Richard, I guess I can’t say specifically what it is about Ron C’s style of writing that I like. I like the bit of humor he throws in.I like a little campy. I know I find myself (since his writing has been acted out) that I am liking even some of the characters that I didn’t like before. Like Sam, Maxie and even Sonny. I feel that they seem more”real” I really feel like since he has taken over the writing that the acting has improved also. BUT I have to agree I would hate to see another child die. I wouldn’t be surprised though if they bring back Hope or Jake….we all know you never really die on a soap.

  • WyFy

I think the campiness of B&B with a focus on tradition is what makes B&B the most consistent soap on the air right now. The other three have all had their ups and downs over the past 5 years while B&B has remained consistent and very successful overseas.

I’m glad GH is doing a lot better than it did in 2011 and this time around with no help.

Richard Last week there was a scene with Johnny Sacara and Anthony. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who has it DVR’d so I won’t give it away, but it was a really dark scene and when you watched it unfold you felt like you were watching someone teetering on the brink of total evil. To me it was one of the most disturbing and compelling scenes I have seen on a soap in awhile.I think in order to be a good actor you have to have good writing and to be a good writer you have to have good actors or it just won’t work. I think GH has that right now with the exception of a few actors.

WyFy, I don’t watch B&B much anymore because it seem like it is geared toward really young viewers but I did see the scenes when Hope/Stephie and Liam were in Colorado. I got a kick out of the scene where Hope was running from the press……reminded me of that old show “The Monkees” Campy.

  • Richard

Chrisann, I can see some of what you are saying. I do agree that the dialogue is better but I just don’t like the overall stories. If they got better I might want to tune in all the time. But to me just good dialogue is not enough.

I saw parts of those scenes you are referring to. Yes it was very well acted. And I have liked Anthony since he first came on but even with what happened I just couldn’t make myself care because the character has just been so unredeemable for awhile now. And they have just ruined Johnny to the point I don’t care what happens to him either.

I just need a writer to at least make care about the overall story if he can’t make care about what is happening to the characters.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that ABC only wants its longest running soap to reach the half century mark. ”

I don’t think ABC gives a rat’s @ss about General Hospital’s 50th anniversary. If Good Afternoon America gets good ratings, ABC and its affiliates are gonna go wild over this show. Wouldn’t you if you were in their place? There’s always the possibility that The Chew, instead of GH, gets canned for GAA. But I’d be hard pressed to see something like that happening. Not with GH’s ratings going back and fourth from one week to another instead of creating a serious gap with the ratings of The Chew.

If this can reinssure some, I can tell you that ABC promotes GH. Not nearly as much as 30 years ago of course, but certainly more than last year. I never watch “ABC Daytime” for more than 15 minutes. Yet, I’ve caught two GH promos over the last month. The first time was in late April during the commercials of The Revolution. It was the promo featuring the return of Felicia. The second time was last week during the commercials of The Chew. It was the promo where they were showing Kate in jail crying in front of Sonny. ABC does not promote GH during primetime. But then again, CBS doesn’t promote its soaps in the evening either. The only one that does it is NBC. And I could be wrong, but I don’t remember ever seeing promos of The Chew or The Revolution in the evening.

On the same note, I’d like to say that it’s probably a good thing that ABC doesn’t display too often GH promos because their promos do absolutely nothing to entice me to watch the show anyway. Each time I see a promo of GH, I get the impression that it’s been lifted straight from the “Alfred Hitchock Channel”.

I’ve been a devoted Days fan since the very beginning when my mother introduced me to the show…have been watching ever since!

I love the Will gay storyline and how they are handling it. It’s about time people wake up and practice tolerance and acceptance rather than the dark days of discrimination, judgement and hatred. Bigotry has no place in this world. Good for Days for tackling this subject in such thoughtful ways.

I love the old characters like Victor, Maggie, Stefano, Hope, Bo, John, Marlena, etc….they are the “salt” of Salem to be savored for sure!

Would love to see fun and crazy couple, Caliope and Eugene come back to Salem! What fun!

Also, would love to see Steve(Patch) come back and have some storylines featuring he and Kayla.

    Go Days!

Speaking of promoting GH, it looks like ABC has followed CBS’s footsteps in cross-promoting soap operas and talk shows.

Indeed, Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos) will be on The Chew this Thursday.

  • diana

Bottom line: “Love in the afternoon”. That’s what the soaps should be concentrating on. Love stories. NOT random hookups, real relationships!

  • jaydawg

stop enough, with all these gay lesbo storylines, it’s so back to the 80’s and 90’s…. ASAP!!!!!!!

  • Chrisann D

jaydawg, Sorry but I disagree with you. The United States is about 30 years behind most civilized contrys when it comes to Gay Rights. So the more alterative lifestyles are featured on Tv in shows like Days, Modern Family and so on the more exposure the better. Just saying….

  • Kayla Rae

I fully agree with Chrisann D regarding the importance of featuring GLBT storylines on tv. The GLBT citizenery has been and continues to be denied basic equal rights and freedom from discrimination. TV has a duty to feature and promote GLBT storylines that represent what is going on in the real world! Good on you, Days of Our Lives, for your worthy contributions!

  • JayTN

If “Days”, and other TV series wanted to ‘represent what is going on in the real world’, then everything would not all be (pardon the pun) rainbows and sunshine. Not everyone who is gay/lesbian gets universal support from friends and family. Some people are disowned because of their sexuality, others are thrown out onto the streets. Personally, I think that writers and producers have a responsibility to show this side of the issue as well, something that they don’t often do. I cannot even think of the last time a gay character on the daytime soaps had to endure any sort of ‘resistance’ of their sexuality. (I’m not including the “Days” storyline, since Sami’s problem is that she was not the first to know about her son’s sexual orientation.) In fact, I believe that the upcoming CBS comedy “Partners” is the first series that that network has ever aired that features an openly gay character in a leading role.

As stupid as it sounds, some teens may think that life is like how television portrays it. So, some of them may ‘come out’ and think that everyone will support them and accept them with open arms, when that is not always a given. Soaps used to be on the cutting edge of social issues (i.e. Erica’s abortion on AMC, an mixed race child passing themselves off as white on OLTL, etc.), but now soaps – and TV in general – seem to shy away from controversial topics for fear of upsetting fans or fearing the wrath of conservative watchdog groups like the Parents Television Council.

I remember when OLTL OD’d on gay characters in 2008, actress Patricia Mauceri was fired from her role as Carlotta Vega and replaced by Saundra Santiago after she reportedly asked the writers (Ron Carlivati, in this instance) the change a storyline where Carlotta was supportive of her son in the event he was gay (he wasn’t). Mauceri reportedly only wanted Carlotta to act the way that her supposedly devout Catholic character would react. The writers reportedly didn’t want Carlotta to have any objections and opted to recast the role rather than have a frank and honest discussion on a persons sexuality.

As I stated earlier, I think the entertainment industry can do more to highlight the LGBT community, but also should show the bad with the good.

  • krktoday

I am loving GH lately. I think this show finally has suspense and is full of twist’s and turn’s for a change. I am bored with Maxie and Matt, but that is about all. Spinelli doesn’t do much for me either. If Molly has to hang out with a rotten kid I wish Todd would bring his kid Jack in for her. He is a very good looking guy and they would be so cute together. I love Todd and John McBain on the show but not so much Star and Tea. I can’t believe the rating’s are slipping again.

  • V Brown

Was just wondering something. Is the ratings of B&B so high because it comes on in many cities after Y&R? I am asking, does anyone think if B&B didn’t have that cushy timeslot that it would be #2? What does everyone think?

  • Chrisann D

JayTn, I agree they should show a more realistic storyline on someone “coming out” When you think about it(and I know this happened years ago but it still happens today)even our Republican canidate for President bullied a gay kid when he was in school. Funny how you can hold someone down cut their hair off and not remember it. I bet the kid he did it to remembers. They need to show that. Remember when Erikas daughter told her she was gay on AMC? She reacted badly and it took her awhile to except it. What they need to show is how the rights of gay people are being denied. They don’t need to preach on it but it does need to be featured.
Now on a different note. Went to see Dark Shadows with my Husband. It was really good. But almost any movie with Johnny Depp is good.

  • JayTN

Just thought I would pass this information along…”Days” will be the only daytime soap airing a new episode tomorrow (Memorial Day). Both CBS soaps, as well as GH will be airing repeat episodes. New episodes for all 4 soaps return on Tuesday. “The Chew” will also air a repeat on Monday followed by new episodes the rest of the week.

Unfortunately, for Gail, “The Revolution” will air repeats on Monday AND Tuesday before returning with new episodes on Wednesday. CBS’s “The Talk”, which has been on a ratings upswing lately, will be in repeats the whole week.
