Peabody Award Winner And Emmy® Award Nominee Clyde Phillips Named New Showrunner

New York, NY – May 31, 2012 – After his highly successful run as the executive producer and showrunner of the hit SHOWTIME drama series DEXTER®, Peabody Award winner and Emmy Award nominee Clyde Phillips has been tapped as the new showrunner for the network’s hit comedy series NURSE JACKIE, which has been renewed for a fifth season. The announcement was made today by David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. Phillips will join Richie Jackson as executive producer on NURSE JACKIE. Caryn Mandabach is also a series executive producer. The fifth season of the series, which is a co-production of SHOWTIME and Lionsgate, will begin production in late 2012.

NURSE JACKIE stars Emmy Award-winning actress Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton, a strong-willed and brilliant – but very flawed – emergency room nurse. Currently in its fourth season, the series also stars Eve Best, Merritt Wever, Paul Schulze, Dominic Fumusa, Anna Deavere Smith and Peter Facinelli. Arjun Gupta and Stephen Wallem are guest stars. Lenny Jacobson co-stars. The season four premiere delivered over 1.1 million viewers for the night, up 30 percent over its prior season’s premiere night. Overall, the series averages 2.77 million total weekly viewers across platforms (including On Demand, Live +7 and replays).

“Clyde brings a unique combination of skills in both comedy and drama, and he is a master at making entertaining and compelling television,” said Nevins. “We are so thrilled with the series’ performance this year, and we know that with the incomparable Edie Falco in front of the camera, the fifth season of NURSE JACKIE will be even better.”

Phillips was executive producer and showrunner on the first four seasons of DEXTER. Prior to that, Phillips created “Get Real,” which starred Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, “Suddenly Susan,” and “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose.” A national bestselling mystery novelist as well, Phillips’s fourth book, Unthinkable, will be published in January 2013 by Amazon.

Ugh, still nothing on The Big C.
I hope it gets one more season.

I’m with you. I know that it’s rating are always slightly lower than “Nurse Jackie” but I thought it was cheaper to produce. I really hope they give the show one more years, especially since then they will be able to cover all of the seasons and the creator said in the first season dvd that she always envisioned the show as a 4-year series than could continue further.

You know, Clyde also had experience as showrunner on Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, so he might give the show a few comedic touches.

This season feels like a final season as Jackie has kicked the drug habit. Where will they go with a 5th season? The Big C should be safe as it has simillar ratings.

Nah, like in most cases Jackie will relapse. Edie Falco is only reason why I enjoy this show, otherwise I wouldn’t be watching.

  • John A

Yeah Falco is great. The rest of the cast are terrible.

Wouldn’t it be a riot to have Gregory House check into Nurse Jackie & have him get her hooked again. Distraught of course after the passing of Wilson & he has a torrid affair with Jackie

I personally think a 1/2 hour is too short, they should expand it to an hour.

I have a strong feeling that The Big C is running its course..Angry Cathy is getting just annoying as hell. However..seeing Joy get creamed by the bus? Priceless. Time to ‘via con dios’.. but GREAT season. Cathy getting the phone call from the doc? not so priceless and I can see the foreshadowing ahead.

Nurse Jackie is SOOOO much better than The Big C. Big C has already ‘jumped the shark’ and her insestant chattering and back and forth banter is just plain annoying. First she doesn’t want her husband, then she wants him, then she doesn’t want him… bla bla bla! Jackie has an EXCELLENT supporting cast. So glad Eddie and head nurse are friends as well as Zoey. Can’t believe some of you said Falco’s supporting cast are no good. THEY ARE EXCELLENT! The kids are a little boring, but Zoey and even dopey Cooper are excellent. Akalytus is excellent as well as the pregnant Dr. who was too vain and silly first season. Dr. Cooper has grown as a character and I love it that Zoey is still funny and now living with Jackie. Glad boring hubby hardly got any air time. Jackie is a better show than The Big C. And why do they keep having on that silly high school student who’s eyes you can’t even see? She is a waste of air space!
