I was in such hurry that I made two spelling errors in my post.

“As long at GH fans put the blame on the network …” should be read instead as “As long as GH fans put the blame on the network …”. In other words, it should have been “as” instead of “at”.

“And it’s not in July and August, when Good Afternoon America, start raising the roof in the ratings that GH must wake up” should be read instead as “And it’s not in July and August, when Good Afternoon America start raising the roof in the ratings, that GH must wake up”. The coma was in the wrong place of the sentence.

I watch GH and Days. Since the reboot Days has been really good. I’ve loved the show and all the stories. To me I can hardly get thru GH right now. To slow and don’t really like them shoving the OLTL charactors on us so much. I can’t believe GH is beating Days on ratings. I came back to Days with the reboot and Not liking all the changes and firings. Since the ratings are so bad now. Get rid of the frontburners EJ and Sami, and put them on the Backburner for a while. They don’t bring in the ratings that you think they do!!!!

  • Melanie

@Richard, I know what you are talking about. I have been checking out GH here and there and like I said, I visit a site dedicated to a GH couple that I like and on there is a daily live thread where someone updates the show as it is happening. I don’t like the way this s/l will possibly turn out either given that this sort of thing has already happened at least twice in the past year already, too sad and depressing. I know some feel the balance on GH is better, but I disagree. Seeing some characters for just 5 minutes in a total week, just doesn’t do it for me. Seems like there are so many characters with stories to tell, it can get a little choppy and all over the place with no real follow up, IMO. I think RC may be over his head a little bit. He claimed in an interview how much he loved GH and its history and wanted to repair some of the core families, but I have yet to really see any follow through with it. I mean, you have alot of the core characters on GH (and some are ignored pretty much), with great story potential and then the OLTL characters who are bringing their stories onto GH while some fans who didn’t watch OLTL don’t have a clue who or what they are talking about. He is trying to blend two fanbases between the two shows which is fine when written well, but sadly, instead it seems to have turned into an “us against them” sort of thing. I just think if their days are numbered, he needs to hurry up and straighten things out instead of confusing and angering people. Which seems to be what is going on amongst the chatter on many of the soap boards.

  • JayTN

Richard…if that is the way the typical OLTL fan feels (i.e. GH fans should just shut up and let us – the OLTL faithful – enjoy our characters), then they are the most inconsiderate, rude, and entitled fans I have ever come across. Perhaps they are reflective of the alleged ABC bias against OLTL (i.e. the soap always being labeled a ‘red-headed stepchild’) and don’t see their behavior the same way a person disconnected from the argument does.

I have never really much cared for Ron Carlivati and don’t really understand why all the soap press seems to fawn all over him (I did hear one theory that the love ‘affair’ could have started because a popular soap blogger is gay and Carlivati is openly gay). I was never a full-time viewer of GH, but I just couldn’t see them doing the take off of “Weekend at Bernie’s” that they are currently doing with Anthony under the previous head writers. Carlivati can have a good story, but it seems – based on his OLTL experience – like he often repeats his stories. How many time did Mitch Laurence return to OLTL during Carlivati’s reign? How many times did Carlivati drag out the multiple personalities of Viki and Jessica? Carlivati has flashes of brilliance, but most of his work – at least in my opinion – is nothing but recycled humdrum. I have joked in the past that Carlivati is taking the ‘go green’ mantra to extremes by recycling storylines.

  • Richard

Melanie, Very good post. I agree with so much of that. The few times I have watched in the past few weeks I think my biggest complaint was something Jay hit on is that too much is played for over the top. For instance the Weekend At Bernie’s thing. I know some go way out there for that but I find something like more at home on Mary Hartman or Soap than I do on GH.

Jay – I am not sure if that is the way the typical OLTL fan feels as I can’t hear those words come out of a few of the OLTL I know and see on boards, but it happens across the boards and even among a few that I have talked to in real life. I don’t know how many times I have read it on general soap boards where the spoilers and stories are shared. If a GH fans even expresses a dislike for the OLTL characters or whatever where they are just told to shut up or quit acting like a baby. Or they are tired of hearing. Or just shut up and let us have something since we lost our show. When many times all that GH fans are trying to express is that they are fighting for the integrity of their show or for the legacy of their show. I just don’t see how anyone can fault for them for that. But some of the OLTL fans do.

I don’t know what it comes from and yes I have heard soap fans of other shows act in a similar way but not to the degree that I have heard it with the OLTL fans. Maybe it was the taking of the “red headed step child” mantra too close to hear. Evidently with the tweet thing this week some of the stars even bought in to it. Or maybe it was just the fact that many of them fell into what the soap press kept heralding about how great the show was and how great their ratings were.

I know I nearly spit out my drink yesterday reading a comment on one board. I forget the posters name, but she was encouraging everyone to boycott ABC and watch The Talk, Let’s Make A Deal, and Days of Our Lives and show ABC that we don’t want their trashy shows. Make the ratings fall over there and we’ll get our shows back…..and on and on and on. Then she signed her tag with the Save Our Soaps tagline and website.

I nearly laughed at how inane all that sounded. First she is encouraging folks to watch General Hospital’s competition so that the ratings will drop for it.

Then of course she is also encouraging folks to watch shows that replaced other soaps who had fans that wish they had their soaps back too.

And then the mockery of signing it under the gumption that she wants to save soaps. Yeah right. She should have signed it “give us back OLTL” instead of Save Our Soaps because she just threw sand in the eyes of GH fans as well as the fans of those shows which got replaced by talk/reality shows too.

And yet they wonder why some don’t take their campaign seriously. Many of us are too smart to see beyond the selfishness of some who suddenly joined this campaign to “save our soaps”.

  • Christopher B

Again Richards opinions of the show mean nothing. He bases them on spoilers he reads and promos. He doesn’t watch the show yet wants to the expert. The only think he is an expert of is pretending to be the victim when he is the one who victimizes everyone on here with his bullying and then when people disagree with him the almighty DICK cries like he is the victim. Happily there are some not all, but more in the majority now that see Richard for the pompous jerk he really is.

Richard you should seek help, spending so much time being negative on a show you don’t even watch is not very mentally stable

  • tiller

I’m about ready to retire GH from my tivo. And to me that is sad. I’ve watched since almost DAY one. You guys are right, I know nobody from OLTL and sorry for your fans, but move them in slowly. I’m starting a little to get to know them. BUT I MISS THE OLD GH. I miss Robin, and Lucky!!!! Thank GOD Anna is back. Loved the scene with Luke and Anna!

  • Debsafan

The idea of Sam not getting to be with her baby on GH because of a baby switch is enough to make me stop watching once and for all. Days is better than it use to be. Young and the Restless, is getting where it’s not very good anymore. Bold Beautiful needs new writers. I hate the triangle story line. Time to bring that to a rest.

  • Kayla Rae

Days has me watching every day…this Friday was GREAT! Diana, I love the gay Will storyline and think it is very interesting and timely. Justin, I agree with you that it would be great to bring back Mimi/Philip/Chloe, etc…that would be great!

  • Anna

The biggest problem with soaps is the terrible writing that has gone on for yrs now without the producers firing the headwriters quickly enough. Most people will wait a yr or 2 to see if the writing has improved, but after that they give up. GH and DOOL have both lost viewers that they won’t be able to win back.

  • Chrisann D

Hi Tiller, Huge OLTL fan here! Miss it terribly. BUT I watch GH now and believe it or not some of my favorite stories don’t include the OLTL characters that have come on. I too love Luke and Annas scenes together. I alos enjoy Luke and Tracy. I think John McBain is a really good fit for GH. Not so much Starr. I would love to see more of Anna,Luke,Tracy,Mac and Monica. Way less of Sonny, Jason, and Johnny. I also love Lulu and Dante. To me they make such a good couple. Heres hoping GH gives us all years of viewing pleasure!

  • Richard

Melanie and whoever it may concern,

Here is my problem with GH and balance. I only watched certain segments of each show I watched but I never could see the balance that I kept reading from some that was better.

I have been waiting for someone to post the episode counts for May to see if I was imagining things from what I was reading, watching and being told. I just couldn’t see the balance being better.

Well here are the counts of how many episodes each person was in:

As I have been saying the numbers just don’t add up to anything being better.

Last year we had Sonny, Jason, Carly on pretty much most of the time with new characters.

Well now we have those 3 on all the time with the OLTL characters which are just as good as new characters to me.

People keep talking about Anna. I never could catch her with my sporadic viewing and now I know why. She was in 5 episodes for the whole month of May.

This is the same thing that we GH fans were complaining about last year. If you are a GH fan that never watched OLTL these characters are new characters who are hogging time like the new characters were last year. They came in and they are being featured in almost as many episodes as Sonny, Jason, Sam and Carly. And GH fans know nothing about them.

Nothing has really changed. Its just the status quo as it has been.

People keep saying to think of these characters as new characters. Well even if you do that you still have the same problem as last year. New characters should be gradually introduced to the canvas to give people time to get used to them — not thrust in there like Garin Wolfe did and now Ron C. is doing.

But just like I just read on another board tonight GH fans really need to shut up. GH was not the show that deserved to be saved last year. It was only saved because ABC chose to save it. OLTL was a better show and had better ratings and had loyal fans who deserved to have their show saved over GH. In fact the name should really be changed to One Life To Live and have a few GH characters and a few AMC characters come over to the new show and dump the rest.

And some (again not all) OLTL fans wonder why GH fans get so riled up over this. I would love to see it the other way around for just one thing to hear the OLTL fans whine about other characters coming onto their show. I can just imagine the whining being done. I can really see it if Sonny and Jason had come over to OLTL and took over. I just don’t buy at all that they would have been happy with it. A few maybe but only a few.

It would have went something like yes OLTL has always been the red-headed step-child. those shows deserved to be cancelled and they shouldn’t be getting a second chance on our show. Stupid ABC always treating OLTL so unfairly. This is One Life To Live — not General Hospital.

I have fallen in love with many new characters over the years but last year we had too many. And this year now we have too many and already talks of more coming. And don’t throw up to me that there are vets of GH that were brought back. If one of those vets were getting the same airtime that the new characters/OLTL characters were getting I would buy that but they aren’t. So to me it doesn’t mean anything at all.

  • Melanie

@Richard, thanks for posting that. They all pretty much say the same thing on the SON board about how the so called “balance” on GH really stinks right now. The same folks dominating 3-4 days each week of course and the rest of the cast are pretty much used as filler material or props for the top 10 and not given their own interesting storylines. That is a shame.

  • Chrisann D

Richard to be fair…if you want to compare the counts of who was in how many episodes shouldn’t you compare it to something? Like last year at this time? Just saying if you want to be fair.

  • george

It seems that very popular soap actors are flocking to Y&R in droves these days. Debbie Morgan and Darnell Williams are poised to rekindle their spark as Angie and Jessie from AMC as Harmony and Sarge. Melissa Claire Egan portrayed psycho Annie in Pine Valley is creating great dynamic with Genoa City resident “bad boy” Adam Newman. Genie Francis of Luke and Laura phenom is stretching her legs toe to toe with the likes of Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman and Stephen Nichols in the battle for “Beauty of Nature”. Tristan Rogers has heightened Australian “mobsterdom” with his portrayal of Colin Atkinson. How can Y&R go wrong with these iconic soap alum among its stable of veterans. Of course, it’s number one. The stories are also beginning to perk up. Keep it flowing Maria Arena Bell.

  • tiller

On GH the only one I really like from OLTL is John McBain, and Tea…

  • Brad

Is it just me or is The View slipping in ratings? The show usually gets 3.6-3.7 million viewers and now it has 3.22 million? If it is down, I’m glad. I cannot stand that show. Just my opinion.

  • Richard

There were newcomers on at this time and what is weird they weren’t even on as much as the OLTL characters are. And we actually have more of Sonny now than we did a year ago.

And this is really astounding when you look at some of these folks for the year so far:

There have been 107 episodes and Maurice Benard has been in 92 of them.

And comparing some of the recent returns:

    Finola Hughes has gotten 37
Robin Mattson has been in 20 episodes
Kristina Wagner has been in 10 episodes

Tea from OLTL has just debuted this month and already in 9.

Kristen Alderson (Starr) has been in 37 episodes
Michael Easton (John) has been in 33 episodes

I couldn’t find the yearly total for Roger Howarth anywhere.

I just listed the yearly totals for a few.

I just don’t see any change at all. In fact some things have gotten worse.

I just don’t see the purpose in some of this. For instance I don’t know why in the world they felt they had to have the John McBain character when they could easily put Finola Hughes back to work at the police dept. if they felt they needed another cop. Or even let the police department hire Robert Scorpio back.

At least that would have been some secession to the long time fans of GH. Neither one of those have really been actively involved in trying to bring Sonny & Jason down through the years.

Looking at the yearly totals we got Noah Drake for 3 episodes, Holly for 6, and Robert for 7. And not one GH character return is getting anything near what the OLTL/new characters are getting. I don’t count Finola Hughes since she came on before the OLTL characters and a head start. She is tied with the Starr character for now but with how much they are still getting and how her appearances have gone down they will all pass Hughes soon. Unless something drastic changes.

And what is weird is that last year when the year was through — even with all the new characters who were on a lot — not one of them was in the Top 10 character/actor appearances for the year. They were all GH characters. The top 5 were Jason, Dante, Sonny, Carly and Sam.

If things continue at the rate they are going for the rest of the year — Starr, John and Todd will all be in the top 10 for the year as Starr and John are almost there now.

And believe whether I look at these characters as being from OLTL or as new characters it doesn’t matter. To me they are new characters and to me just like some or even worse than some new characters last year there is just too much of them.

  • Melanie

These episode counts are interesting. I didn’t even start noticing them until I lurked around at the SON board a couple of months back. Oh yes, at this time last year on GH is when we had Brenda’s return at it was a total screw up! Noah Drake was on for three episodes? I only saw him on one. I noticed on the GH facebook page that a few weeks ago they had over 900,000 likes, but now it is only down to about 800,000. That is weird.

  • Richard

That is weird Melanie. I am not sure they would go as far to not like the page but I have heard and read on boards of many who have said they quit watching. But I have also heard others who said they started watching. Of course I never hit like on their Facebook page. Some of those series pages on Facebook can get crazy at times. But what online page can’t at times.

One thing that might help GH in the coming weeks is that 2 more areas lost SoapNet recently one of them was the Comcast viewers in the Washington DC area who lost Soapnet as of Friday.

The Soapnet phase out to Disney Jr. sure is going slowly.

Conspiracy theorists would say that ABC is doing it on purpose. No sense in phasing out SoapNet quickly to force those viewers to suddenly start watching live or DVR the ABC version and watch it within 1 day.

It is interesting to look at all the things that actually affect the ratings. Sad that if you do that you are labeled a hater.
