  • Melanie

@Jay, yes there are several stories that RC wrote on OLTL, that is now playing out on GH: baby switch, Mental Illness, DID issues and supposed rape of a mentally ill woman. (For some reason, RC acts like mental illness is something to laugh at). These three s/l’s in particular happened on OLTL also. I too remember Robert Ford being a reality show producer, or wanting to start one. There was another reality show idea that came from Y&R a couple of years ago when Abby was doing one titled “The Naked Heiress” which of course her parents weren’t fond of. I don’t like this Mob Princess stuff that Kristina is doing,it is just too stupid and not a good way to introduce a new actress who is a recast of someone who was pretty well liked. All the soaps pretty much have ran out of fresh and creative ideas.

  • Joe

@Melanie, I agree, Kristina shouldn’t go from for the most part a very “classy” young lady who was thrown one to many curve balls, to a real “bitch”. What are the writers thinking?? If you want a character to grow, you dont do that to the character especially one so young and one that was a fan favorite, and one of the few reasons I would watch the show. For the most part, I think the “one life” crossover is working out, slowly but surely.!!!

  • Diana Baskin

I think a lot of people like myself don’t want to get involved in another soap to see it get cancelled. I watched GL, ATWT then OLTL. I have watched YR and BB for years. They are the only ones I watch now. Well I haven’t watched BB for a while but do plan to return when they get rid of the never ending triangle. I was going to try and watch GH but decided not to invest in another soap in danger of being cancelled.

If GH had not had 2 bad days on Tuesday and Friday their ratings would have been much better for the week since Monday didn’t count.

Last year this was the official start week of GH’s ratings bleed. They set new lows or tied new lows in almost every category the week of Memorial Day in 2011.

The week after Memorial Day GH and Days both set new lows in the key 18-49 demo. The only 2 shows they were ahead of by that point were AMC and B&B.

B&B had really fallen very low at that point. It was still a few weeks I think before they started their climb.

It will be interesting to see what the ratings do with the baby switch and also following a holiday week. Even though the holiday week was not too good to soaps in 2011, the next week was almost as bad with 4 out of the six shows tying lows in HH and 5 of them dropping viewers from the previous week.

  • Pat

Yes, GH is showing some life and some kind of pulse, but I can’t help but think that those slight increases are due to a short-term curiosity spike and nothing more. Let’s see if the vast majority of those viewers keep sticking around for this entire stale baby switching/mental illness nonsense. Daytime soaps these days are akin to a carton of milk kept way past the expiration date. How many times can the same tired storylines, week after week and year after year, be recycled over and over again? It’s no wonder viewers are abandoning these shows in droves and the genre is on its last legs. Do these writers and producers have even an ounce of creativity in their brains?

  • Jayman

With Summer Coming, Soap Operas can get some viewers from children who have no cable, thus increasing there ratings.

  • Richard

Jayman, But soaps traditionally now lose ratings during the summer. It used to be the obvious but I personally don’t think the soaps have as big of a young viewership as they once did. Thus one of the reasons why the soaps quit monitoring the under 17 group and added the 25 to 54 demo.

Soaps used to do very well in the summer but the last few years have been bad.

The only thing that some of them have going for them this year is that since SoapNet is slowly being faded out many are being forced to find a different way to watch their show or give it up. If some of these choose to watch live or at least DVR the ABC/NBC/CBS show and watch it within 1 day then the ratings benefit from it.

Completely doing away with SoapNet quickly might have helped Y&R/Days/GH more than this slow fade out, but we will never know since they chose to do the slow burn off of SoapNet. And then again it would have only helped the 3 soaps if those viewers were Nielsen viewers and watched live or chose to DVR.

  • Pat

“Days” writers have, basically ruined the character of Nicole.
She used to be a hot, brassy chick, who was slightly evil, and a lot of fun to watch.
Now, she looks washed out, sickly, and is obsessed about having yet ANOTHER baby.
If “Days” is going to save itself from cancellation, she is one of the first characters, they should change!
Give her a miscarriage, and bring back the old bitchy, trouble making Nicole who created a lot of bad things for a lot of people.
Also, bring back Chloe, to give Nicole some competition, in the “bitchy” department.
The Show needs a MAJOR overhaul. Get rid of MOST the older actors, keep ONLY Bo and Hope, and Maggie and Victor, but.on a “recurring” basis, not as main characters anymore.
Get rid of Marlena, Abe, Roman, Theo, Jen, and especially John, (the World’s worst actor). BORING!!
The nucleous of the show, should be built around the YOUNGER actors, along with a couple of NEW characters. They, along with E.J., Sami, Brady, and Madison, (wish she would stay), should be the focis of the show.
Love Gabi as a villainess, she can be the new “Kate”.
Also like Abigail, Chad and Cameron, they just need bigger storylines.

  • rhodyguy

@pat : i totally agree with you…Drake Hogysten sucks as an actor- he belongs on a show like GET SMART Or Saturday night live with all his facial expressions !! Guess with the LATEST Reboot in Aug/Sep they are concentrating on younger characters that’s why they are bringing back Shawn, Belle, Nick, Eric (Sammi’s twin), etc, etc…And getting rid of Ian, Bo, Stefano (already gone), Lexie, Carrie & Austin (thank god- they turned that character into a total NIEVE, WUSS!!), Jack (boring comeback),Jennifer (Boring now), Kayla (boring comeback), Melanie (not that old but boring now-lol), doug & julie (hardly on anyway), Once they wrap the “Who shot Stefano?” storyline ( it was probably Lexie- realizing noone will be safe that leaves unless her father is gone too) then they will start the LATEST Reboot…

  • Jeff

Any improvement in the demo for any of the soaps is good, but GH being up that much while down a bit in ratings is good, and up over last year is great! And, it’s 282,000 over the Chew in the demo, which is nice to see!

  • Jeff

@chrisann, you probably won’t see this, but I was skimming through myself and I saw your comment, and I will miss you too. You seem like such a kind soul! Let’s both enjoy the show and let people say whatever they want. Haters will always hate, critics will always critique, and lovers will always love!

  • Richard

….and those that judge others and categorize them as haters will continue to do so too.

As much as GH did rise in the key demo, the one I am still impressed with is just how far B&B has risen and still continues to be ignored by the soap opera press.

I just wonder what they have to do to get someone to notice. I guess they won’t until they hire Ron C. when and if GH gets cancelled.

To me B&B is the little engine that could.

  • Chris B

@Richard don’t take this the wrong way but it seems to me like you constantly judge others on here when they decide to be positive about GH. I am not saying that is 100% face but certainly seems that way.

Now when people say they won’t come here anymore and will enjoy the show for it is because they want to enjoy the show without all the criticism that a few do on here you have to throw little digs at them.

That is where my issue has always been with you, let others have their opinion, let them enjoy the show . If they chose to like it without analyze how many days a certain character was on, etc then let them.

I am actually going to be very interested in next weeks ratings since this is the week the baby switch and Tea’s baby dying all transpired. When those ratings are posted next week it will definitely give a better picture of whether people really are hating the baby switch/death storyline or if it is just the people who post on the internet. We shall see

  • Richard

I guess you would see it that way Chris B.

You guys never see the digs thrown at me or others who don’t enjoy ever little crumb. The dig was thrown first when me and others like me were once again called haters just because we don’t like everything about the show.

I mean we are either “bad soap fans”, “haters”, “critics”, “work for ABC”, or work for Nielsen or a whole other batch of names thrown at us just because we are not a fan of everything thrown out there and actually have some taste and preference about what we watch.

So sorry Chris but the digs go both ways. If people can’t take them then they shouldn’t dish them out. You throw a dig at me and of course I am going to defend myself just like all of you do.

And if a person chooses to leave that is their business. I’m not the one coming on here with 5 or 6 different names just to find someone to agree with me.

And I am just as anxious to see next weeks numbers too. But I also went back a couple of years since SON archives those to see what the week after Memorial Day has looked before. With the trend esp. last year it will be hard to say if the ratings go down next week whether is storyline related or just the trend that happens after holiday weeks sometimes. It may be the next 2 weeks before we can get a real feel of how the general audience feels about this storyline.

  • Richard

And by the way my dig was nothing to do with the person above me being positive. It was this:

“Let’s both enjoy the show and let people say whatever they want. Haters will always hate, critics will always critique, and lovers will always love!”

But I didn’t see you calling Jeff out on his dig at me and others.

If you are going to call one out on a dig then you should call all out. That was always my problem with Chrisann. She called all the “haters” out on stuff but very seldom called someone she saw as loving the show out on theirs. And several of us called her on it.

    Richard, serious question:

Have you spent your entire life in front of the tube obsessing over these fictional characters, and the ‘actors’ and budgets, and ratings, and…etc., etc., etc.?
