Updated Tuesday, June 5Game of Thrones set series highs in total viewers with 4.2 million and also a series high with a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating.

Game of Thrones airs its second season finale Sunday night. Time flies, especially when there are only ten episodes in a season!

The premiere telecasts of Game of Thrones season two episodes has been pretty consistent. It premiered to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating and hit that rating two other times. It hasn't hit or cracked the four million viewer mark in those telecasts, but it's not far off either.

Game of Thrones season two ratings:

Date Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 18-49 Rtg Viewers (Millions)
Sunday, April 01, 2012 The North Remembers 2.0 3.858
Sunday, April 08, 2012 The Night Lands 1.9 3.759
Sunday, April 15, 2012 What is Dead May Never Die 1.8 3.766
Sunday, April 22, 2012 Garden of Bones 1.8 3.654
Sunday, April 29, 2012 The Ghost of Harrenhal 1.9 3.903
Sunday, May 06, 2012 The Old Gods and the New 2.0 3.879
Sunday, May 13, 2012 A Man Without Honor 1.9 3.694
Sunday, May 20, 2012 The Prince of Winterfell 2.0 3.864
Sunday, May 27, 2012 Blackwater 1.6 3.384
Sunday, June 03, 2012 Valar Morghulis 2.2 4.202

Not surprisingly, last week's "Blackwater" episode hit season lows it aired on a holiday weekend. I'd expect a rebound in the season finale, but will it set records?

Yes, of course we know that these ratings don't matter to HBO in the way that they matter for broadcast networks and advertising supported cable channels. HBO doesn't sell advertising so it really only cares about happy subscribers and luring more of them. And yes, of course we know that means HBO doesn't really care about how the premiere telecast of a particular episode fared. It cares more about all the aggregate viewing including DVR, encore telecasts and HBO Go.

But don't fool yourself: even for HBO the live plus same day ratings are a very good indicator for how things are going with a show. HBO doesn't need to wait to see all of the aggregate numbers to know that Game of Thrones is much more popular than Girls or Veep but still less popular among its subscribers than True Blood.

The poll is for entertainment purposes only. Besides, we'll see how the first telecast of the season finale by Tuesday. It'll be long after that (if ever) before we see the consolidated numbers including HBO Go.

    2.2//4.2 Million Viewers – Blackwater was exactly like an epic movie (better than many of them) Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey deserve Emmy nomination for sure

    The Dragons eventually become a bigger part. Book 2 was fairly boring. Book 3 is where all the action is so expect two good seasons to come (book 3 has been split into the next two seasons). As for the magic, think of it this way. The colder it gets, the more magic comes into play for some reason that is yet to be explained.

    Oh and for the people complaining about too many bad guys vs. good guys, well it may be that people have changes of heart. Both good and not so good. And people you think are good have been evil all along, and vice versa. I know specifically that one character seems to be a real POS but he will probably be the one that ends up saving them all from the white walkers with his past actions.

    I doubt it because the MTV Movie Awards and NBA Playoffs air at the same time.

    @AC75 LOL at you trying to pretend you went from being a fan to a hater this season. You have always been hating on this show so I don’t know why want to act like you were once a fan. Prior to the 2nd season premiere TVbytheratings had a poll for what the 2nd season premiere ratings would be and you were hating on the show saying the 1st season sucked and was a huge disappointed and every week you were posting negative comments about the show. You just enjoy hating on this show and no matter what the quality of season 2 was you would have been hating on it no matter what.

  • J

    Breaking Bad is still the best show on TV, but this is close 2nd. It should be a new record.

  • AC75

    @James

    Oh man, that’s me told. BURN!, right?

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

    If you don’t like a show why in the world you you waste time reading articles about it and posting crappy comments about it? I could list 100 better things to do with that time if you need help.

  • The End

    @AC75

    By the way he talks, it sounds like he was stalking you on here. He seems knowledgable about all your Game of Thrones related posts and has come to the assumption you dislike the show. That or has too much time on his hands.

    Sorry, kinda offtopic but his post aimed at you came accross that way. Anyway I’m expecting the season finale of this show to do well. Wouldn’t surprise me if Season 3 of Game of Thrones frequently breaks the 4 million viewer mark.

    There has been consistant growth in the numbers.

  • AC75

    @The End

    Seems that way. I didn’t realize there were post police on here keeping track of what people have to say week in week out. It’s OK, though. I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I didn’t love S1 of GOT. Why would I? But I would say that I still considered myself a “fan” at the start of S2. Now I’m not so sure. I’ll watch the remainder of this season for sure, but may not stick with it next year unless there’s some still unknown WOW! factor on the horizon.

  • OMG

    I wanted to love Game of Thrones but I find the nudity quite disturbing, maybe I have been watching too much censored broadcast.

    2.2 18-49
    4.3 million

    First thanks for taking the time to write when you actually read the books. I haven’t read the books but I understand what’s going on. I get that there’s a lot of stuff left out, but I think you made a mistake with the whitewalkers.

    I believe that was a giant taking the babies. The reason I think it was a giant is b/c in the same episode Bran told the old man that serves the Lord of Winterfall that giants, magic, and dragons have been dead for a thousand years. When they talk about John Snow seeing a white walker they are talking about the white walker he killed in season one when it was about to kill Lord Commander at the wall. Am I wrong or right? Please correct me if i’m indeed wrong.

  • Polar Bear

    too bad it isn’t more popular than true blood. it deserves to be.

  • Polar Bear

    @HERB
    and how is that relevant

  • David

    Why do people keep suggesting that you need to read the books to understand the show. The show was created for anyone to watch and nobody will be confused if they watch the show without reading the books. Maybe the books give you a more in-depth insight to the character minds, but that is expected from a book.

    Also, people need to know that a lot of males watch this show and it will be competing with the Heat vs Celtics game, which is now very competitive after that amazing game 2 and then Celtics winning game 3. The MTV movie awards will also be on, but I do not think it will have that much of an impact on this show.

  • Californiadgd

    Yes, 2.1-2.2

  • kopack

    It’s gonna be well over 4 I think. I’m going to say 4.6. Game of Thrones has been talked about a lot lately, and the following for the show is growing.

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

    @Epic

    That was a white walker that picked up the baby. That part wasn’t explicitly seen by the character in the nook but implied. In the show they chose to show it.

    A wight is a dead person that is reanimated bu a white walker and it will kill at there command unless it is hacked to pieces or burned. And if it is hacked to pieces, the parts still try to move.

    A white walker in the book is actually called an Other, but they changed it in the show so as not to be confused with Lost. They can only be killed by obsidian (also called dragon glass in the book) and maybe by Valyrian steel and dragon fire.

    As for what you are saying about giants, I am not absolutely sure that giants and white walkers are not one and the same thing. The walkers are very tall. I’m probably wrong there though because that was supposed to be a giant’s skull on the bone guy’s face in one of the last eps and there is no way to get a white walkers skull since they melt to icewater when they die. I’ll have to go back and look but I saw some stills from that ep and whatever it was in the dark looked like the white walker from ep 1 but it could be a giant. And yeah it is confusing for them to rename the Others to white walkers because the dead are called “wights”. That was a bad naming decision on their part.

  • DW

    it will beat the 2.0 but not by much. true blood is coming back , fans of that show , some of them , have added HBO in the past week and maybe caught the marathon yesterday or caught up with it on hbo go.

  • Cristi M.

    I vote for 2.5 rating and 4.5 million viewers. The second season finale will be fantastic !!!
