Updated Tuesday, June 5Game of Thrones set series highs in total viewers with 4.2 million and also a series high with a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating.

Game of Thrones airs its second season finale Sunday night. Time flies, especially when there are only ten episodes in a season!

The premiere telecasts of Game of Thrones season two episodes has been pretty consistent. It premiered to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating and hit that rating two other times. It hasn't hit or cracked the four million viewer mark in those telecasts, but it's not far off either.

Game of Thrones season two ratings:

Date Game of Thrones Season 2 Episode 18-49 Rtg Viewers (Millions)
Sunday, April 01, 2012 The North Remembers 2.0 3.858
Sunday, April 08, 2012 The Night Lands 1.9 3.759
Sunday, April 15, 2012 What is Dead May Never Die 1.8 3.766
Sunday, April 22, 2012 Garden of Bones 1.8 3.654
Sunday, April 29, 2012 The Ghost of Harrenhal 1.9 3.903
Sunday, May 06, 2012 The Old Gods and the New 2.0 3.879
Sunday, May 13, 2012 A Man Without Honor 1.9 3.694
Sunday, May 20, 2012 The Prince of Winterfell 2.0 3.864
Sunday, May 27, 2012 Blackwater 1.6 3.384
Sunday, June 03, 2012 Valar Morghulis 2.2 4.202

Not surprisingly, last week's "Blackwater" episode hit season lows it aired on a holiday weekend. I'd expect a rebound in the season finale, but will it set records?

Yes, of course we know that these ratings don't matter to HBO in the way that they matter for broadcast networks and advertising supported cable channels. HBO doesn't sell advertising so it really only cares about happy subscribers and luring more of them. And yes, of course we know that means HBO doesn't really care about how the premiere telecast of a particular episode fared. It cares more about all the aggregate viewing including DVR, encore telecasts and HBO Go.

But don't fool yourself: even for HBO the live plus same day ratings are a very good indicator for how things are going with a show. HBO doesn't need to wait to see all of the aggregate numbers to know that Game of Thrones is much more popular than Girls or Veep but still less popular among its subscribers than True Blood.

The poll is for entertainment purposes only. Besides, we'll see how the first telecast of the season finale by Tuesday. It'll be long after that (if ever) before we see the consolidated numbers including HBO Go.

I dont think it’ll break a 2.0, but it’ll definitely be up there looking at the ratings. I thought they were declining since people could watch it online but I guess thats not the case!

Also I absolutey love this show but I tend to avoid commenting on it because their are a rotten few people everywhere that like to post book spoilers and ruin people’s experience. I’ve already had quite a few would-be-shocking experiences taken away from me due to comments.

I really have no doubt that it wont hit a series high.

  • Kyle

    No.

    I will say 1.9 3.8 Million.

  • Barbarossa

@Ac75. Out of curiousity did you see the battle last week?

  • Lucard

But would people know in advance there is going to be a wedding? :)

  • Retlaw

    A red wedding?

Oh my. Many viewers will be shocked.

  • AC75

    @Barbarossa

Yeah, I did. Battle scenes aren’t really my thing, but Lena Headey was quite good. She’s the one villain I actually enjoy.

  • Epic

:( I hate having to wait a year for season 3.

  • Epic

    Great episode btw.

  • The End

    @Epic

Yeah, it’s a shame that HBO doesn’t just order 2 x 10 episode Seasons all in one go. So they can work on the next season after a short hiatus and leave a shorter gap between seasons.

A 6 month gap between seasons instead of a 11/12 month one wins everytime. Shame that’l never happen.

  • The End

Ah, forgot to do this but I’ll give a more specific prediction for this episodes ratings.

    I’m now going for 4.5 million, 2.3 18-49.

    I have a good feeling.

Just saw the finale! YES! MORE ZOMBIES! MORE THAN THE WALKING DEAD! And weirder, too!

    And dragons spouting fire!

    That’s what I was talking about! :-)

  • Barbarossa

with the extra 10 minutes, I think it might get the boost it needs to get over the 4 million hump. I guess we’ll see tomorrow

  • Pat

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

Most watched episode of the show ever. By 38%. LOL at the people who couldn’t imagine that happening.

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

And if you count the encore, It’s audience was 5.1 million after you add the 910k that watched it.

Expected the show to be at a series high for the finale, and I wasn’t disappointed. And @AC75, maybe you’d enjoy the show more (at least if you continue to watch) if you stopped looking at it as ‘the good guys versus the bad guys’. The characters are more complex and conflicted than that. Put yourself in one of the ‘bad guys’ shoes and hopefully you’ll begin to see that they have their own rationale and reasoning, same as everyone does in real life. Sure, some characters are pure villains, but there are still a lot of people to root for. It’s hard to see right now, but nearly everything that happens in this show is important later down the road, so think of the weight certain things will carry when the pay-off happens as delayed gratification (though I love the show as is; it’s second only to Breaking Bad for me right now).

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

There is only a handful of truly bad characters on GoT. Cersei is one. But next season expect someone you probably really dislike to change his/her ways and become an honorable person. And expect someone who has always done nothing but the right thing, and has nothing to show for it, to get fed up and do some bad stuff lol.
