“Y & R” continues to bleed viewers and it is the only soap to show year-over-year audience erosion for the week – YAY!!!

The crap Maria Arena Bell is chucking at viewers is just Gawd-Awful!! Bill Bell is spinning in his final resting place!!

  • MBmomof3

Wow DOOL really did bounce back. Go soaps!

  • Justin121

    The Bold and The Beautiful

The #1 soap outside of Yound & Rest.

Only 1 mil behind the #1 soap

    Only 100,000 key-demo viewers behind #1 Y&R

    Only 0.3 behind #1 soap

    The gap between B&B & Y&R went from 0.7 to 0.3 year-to-year

All these facts would’ve sounded far-fetched just last year

Go The Bold & Beautiful is The Best

Soap op[eras wouldn’t be in as bad of shape if the networks wouldn’t have got greedy a long time ago and expanded them to an hour. TBATB is the only one doing it still half-hour. That seem to be good for it.

  • Richard

When soaps like GH went to an hour they were in the hands of writers who knew how to handle it. They filled out the hour with a mixture of characters yes some more than others but still they had a nice cast of characters that could float in and out of the story.

Today’s writers don’t know how to write for the hour format at all. They pick a few faves on each show and feel like that is all they can write for. From reading other commenters comments and knowing how they do GH it is not just an assumption.

A 30 minute show can only afford to revolved around a smaller cast. An hour show 5 days a week needs to have broad coverage of characters. If you focus on 5 or 6 almost every day of the month, people are going to get board. And eventually you are going to even run out of ideas for those same 5 characters.

  • DenverDean

B&B is the real story for 2012 – big increases in viewers and demo year-to-year. It will be interesting if the remote shot in Italy that begins this week will have an impact. In age of budget cuts, B&B has shot two remotes in Aspen, one in Cabo and, now, Italy.

  • Richard

I agree DenverDean, and as I said in the other thread the real story just keeps getting no notice from the soap press at all. I find that so weird. I guess the only way they could get the coverage is if they hired the boy wonder Ron C.

What B&B has done and is able to do has really surprised me and I have never seen the show. I have been tempted to see what it is all about but just not interested in getting into another soap.

On the subject of the soap press, Gold Derby got 3 of the better know soap opera reporters together to give their predictions on who had the best reels for Outstanding Program at the Emmys. It was totally sickening. Two of them kept it professional and I appreciated that. But one of the other guys spent almost his whole time kissing the as* of Ron C. and One Life To Live.

After seeing the type of stuff Ron C. writes and as other poeple have said what he copies from other shows and repeats his own stories, I still cannot see what is so special about this man that has all these reporters exalting him to deity. The only thing I can figure is it is his looks because he sure has not writing talent that I can see.

  • Richard

It is nice to see all the shows do well in the 18-49. Memorial Day week was much better to the soaps this year than last year.

As I said in the other thread Memorial Day week last year was the week that GH set its first new low of the summer bleed of viewers.

The week after Memorial Day last year was even worse as almost every soap tied some low and Days and GH set new lows the week after Memorial Day in the key demo.

It will be interesting to see how all the soaps do this next week. If they can hold on to even part of what they gained it will be good.

Maybe Days will keep improving with thier coming changes …they should get rid of Drake Hogysten because he sucks as an actor- he belongs on a show like GET SMART Or Saturday night live with all his facial expressions !! Guess with the LATEST Reboot in Aug/Sep they are concentrating on younger characters that’s why they are bringing back Shawn, Belle, Nick, Eric (Sammi’s twin), etc, etc…And getting rid of Ian, Bo, Stefano (already gone), Lexie, Carrie & Austin (thank god- they turned that character into a total NIEVE, WUSS!!), Jack (boring comeback),Jennifer (Boring now), Kayla (boring comeback), Melanie (not that old but boring now-lol), doug & julie (hardly on anyway), Once they wrap the “Who shot Stefano?” storyline ( it was probably Lexie- realizing noone will be safe that leaves unless her father is gone too) then they will start the LATEST Reboot…maybe then the numbers will keep increasing – but who knows …

I don’t like Victor and Sharon together on Y&R. It looks awful, and in bad taste. Even for a soap opera. I thought Day’s did Stephano dirty the way they killed him off after all these years. He’s one of the reason I still watch. They could have showed the actor more respect. GH and B&B are just boring. Have a hard time watching. Hate the baby switch on GH. That gets old in a hurry. I love what’s left of my soaps. But some days it’s hard to set and watch them. The writers on all the shows need to be replaced.

  • Jack

With OLTL and AMC gone, GH should be greatful they are not in 6th place.

  • Will

I follow The Bold And The Beautiful cuz I feel more identified. They are young, fresh and the storylines are more interesting for younger people. It’s more dynamic and it’s constantly trying to get out of the studios. Y&R is just Ok in my opinion, the storylines are Ok too, but it needs to get out and film somewhere else, I get absolutely bored of the same unreal settings, we are in the second decade of 21 century and nobody believes in that! If they decide to make a change …it would be awesome. I LOVE B&B

  • Clarke

@Bart I disagree. Sure, Y&R has been MUCH better in the past, but recently I have been finding it more interesting. I do agree MAB should leave though… but it is NOT nearly as bad as your making it sound.
The Ricky/Phyllis/Dr. Reid/Daisy plotline is actually interesting entertaining.

B&B is the worst soap out there the writers are brain dead, they dialogue on this show is awful the characters keep repeating the same stuffs over and over.

  • Cath

Back in the Golden Years of soaps they did know how to write for an hour, exactly as Richard says. On GH there would be the main story line which would be the main focus on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. There would be secondary story lines on Tuesday and Thursday, with characters that floated in and out of the main story if necessary. This kept a continuity going. In addition there were the Super Couples, who were in various stages of togetherness, but their trials were organic and more Us vs Them. In addition if a scene ended on a commercial break that same scene would finish after the break. Made the story flow better. Viewers hate the mob story lines People forget that GH has had mob stories from way back. Luke worked for the mob and that threat was the reason he and Laura went on the run. The last time Anna was Commissioner was her big romance with Duke Lavery. The problem isn’t the focus on the mob. It is the repetitive writing. So lazy. . How many times has Sonny or Jason or Johnny been shot? Recycling the same plots is boring. GH needs more humor and some real romance. There is no one to root for any more. Bringing in the cast from One Life isn’t helping either. More stale plots recycled from that show. Maybe there are no fresh ideas any more. So shrink GH to a half hour.

  • Martel

I think the only reason why B&B’s ratings are getting so close to Y&R’s is because people don’t really have the time to sit down in the middle of the day for an hour to watch a soap. People are busy. I know that one reason Y&R use to be more successful is because it was at the lunchtime period. But now as people are going out to eat more with, they most likely get home in the 1:30 period in time for B&B. I agree that the story-lines on Y&R have been crap lately, but after 30+ years of daytime TV, everything can’t really be “fresh, new and exciting.”

  • Richard

Thanks for the post and you are so right. I remember times when there could be as many 6 or more couples that were truly worth rooting for and all had their own story and sometimes the stories overlapped.

And sorry I just don’t see anything even being hinted at that we are really going to get anything about GH in the near future. It was tweeted today or yesterday that 2 more Manning teens/tweens may be coming for at least the summer.

And Michael Easton confirmed that they are definitely building Llanview sets in an interview he did this week.

I read today that the new character coming that is tied to Sonny is another mobster.

I keep being called a hater or being too negative. Sorry but I am still operating under the assumption that we are in the last days of GH as ABC hasn’t really confirmed anything. As a loyal GH fan this is not what I wanted to see for the final days of my show.

All this is going on and obviously there are no plans to suddenly focus on GH other than tying these OLTL characters to the mob characters. I just don’t see Ron C. suddenly changing direction and giving us anything.

And I definitely don’t see what Ron C. is doing bringing in the type of viewers to make ABC suddenly stand up and say lets give GH more time. And if it does all I see Ron C. doing is just bringing more and more of Llanview over. We have characters and now we are getting sets.

In the end with all the bellyaching that OLTL was the red-headed step-child it will be GH that is one who is totally screwed in the end. And it will be at the hands of the OLTL writers.

Whether AMC or OLTL fans regard what they got as a good farewell to their shows or not — at least the farewells were about AMC and OLTL. GH fans will not have that. The last year or month of show will be focused on blending OLTL characters in, adding their sets, and retelling the OLTL stories on GH.

As I have said over and over and over again, I think I wouldn’t have been so angry about the OLTL characters coming or new characters as basically they are if they hadn’t just been used as another way to build even more story for Jason/Sonny/Carly. And that is all they have done. As well as elevating another character Kate right up there with them and most GH fans were tired of her in the first place.

I see GH’s ratings as a bag of mixed emotions. I would love to get excited about GH’s ratings going up as it means the show might be saved. But I also know that if Ron C. and Frank V. think that what they are showing works in any way at all — they are just going to keep on the same path. And if it stays on the same path, there is no way I am returning to watch it — so basically they might as well just cancel it if that is the case.

  • Richard

Martel, I think too that from what I have seen on some boards, B&B follows the news at Noon in many places. Local news shows do well in many places. So that could be part of it.

I have reading some of the posts on other boards where people are asking why B&B is doing so well when others are floudering.

One thing that I read over and over is that they like the show because it is still about the characters they have known and loved or that the characters front and center are characters that are children of those characters. The viewers have history with these characters and can relate to them.

I don’t know if that is the only reason. But some are also saying that after AMC they wanted to watch another soap and it was easier to just get involved in a 30 min show than an hour show with more characters they had to learn who they were.

    So who knows.

There is one reason for TB&TB’s success. It’s ’cause it’s on CBS ;-)
