This is a complete ranker of Live + 7 DVR Ratings for all programs that aired during the 20111-2012 season. The weekly Live +7 Ratings post will return two weeks after the start of the 2012-2013 broadcast season in early October.
Our source for Live+7 DVR ratings includes only DVR ratings for the 2011-2012 season. The weekly original, regular programs, excluding both repeats (which are unlikely to be heavily DVR viewed) and "specials". There were 160 such programs in the data for the 2011-2012 season.
During the 2011-12 broadcast season Modern Family topped the rankings for the season's DVR viewing adults 18-49 ratings gains. Between the Live+Same Day period (as reported in all our other ratings posts) and the Live + 7 Day measurement periods Modern Family posted a substantial gain of 2.4 adults 18-49 ratings points.
Grimm had the largest percentage gain with a 73.3% 18-49 ratings increase from DVR viewing.
Modern Family led the absolute average viewership gained from DVR viewing adding 4.76 million viewers via DVR between the Live+Same Day and Live + 7 day measurement periods.

Definitions:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.
Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Secret Circle on CW doing better than all other shows besides The Vampire Diaries once the DVR ratings are applied in overall viewers and (18-49) demo and still being canceled while Nikita and Gossip Girl get renewed LOL!
Up All Night doing well overall for NBC, who would have known. Grimm is a monster in DVR. Smash raising quite a bit.
Revenge, Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, The Middle, Happy Endings, Apart 23, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing, Castle, PP all doing well for ABC. Scandal is a flop should have been canceled along with GCB.
New Girl was a big hit for Fox. Terra Nova should have been renewed based on the rankings. Even Alcatraz does much better than Touch which is a flop.
CBS nobody young watches the Good Wife? Person of Interest raises fairly well. Big Bang is a huge hit for CBS.

@ Frodo I hear what you’re saying regarding TSC. The reason TSC was cancelled and HOD survived is because the latter is cheaper to produce. It seems that the special effects and sets on TSC were much more expensive and, so, Pedowicz pulled the plug on it. I haven’t seen any information on whether TSC was losing money but, the cancellation of that program implies that there’s some advantage in continuing to run a low budget show like HOD over a higher rated one like TSC.
It appears that the WB is more appropriately referred to as an entertainment partnership than a network. It’s not as diverse as a network and there seems to be an emphasis on having each show pull its own weight. GG is still around because it offers some syndication potential and Nikita seems to sell well overseas. In other words, it’s no longer about domestic ratings for either show. Requiring each show to pull its own weight doesn’t bode well for Beauty which is replacing TSC. This show isn’t based on an original concept and is going up against great competition from all four major networks. Since a significant portion of the CW’s viewership comes from recordings, I doubt if Beauty will see a large live audience. That means it will have trouble staying afloat because time shifting seemingly isn’t favored at the CW and, unlike the other networks, Pedowicz doesn’t seem inclined to carry shows like TSC just because they have a loyal following. For various reasons, it struck me as being unfair that the CW wouldn’t stand behind what is arguably its second highest rated show. So, rather than have to risk a similar incident in the future, I’m simply going to avoid the CW.

REVENGE ends the season with 10.4 million, approx. 8 million watched live.
Such a pity these ratings don’t ‘count’ to the same extent as Live+SD….you look at something like Awake, over 50% increase in the demo for Live + 7D.
Okay I know, still probably not good enough to have been renewed, but it does prove many more people were watching than the overnight/’final’ ratings would report.

There’s very little chance Beauty and the Beast is going to do well at all. Early reviews are saying the pilot aren’t very good or worst yet, terrible and it’s in an ever tougher time slot compared to this last season. Good luck with that, CW.

Close. Networks get paid for C+3 Day commercial ratings, which measure the average viewing of the commercials within a show within 3 days of airdate. Those ratings are rarely available to the public.
These, and pretty much all other ratings you see in public are program ratings which measure the average viewing of the entire program, including commercials.
I’m very happy with some of the increases for some of my shows. ABC really does increase well with DVR. Great for Grey’s and Modern Family being at the top. And same for Revenge, OUAT, PP. Happy Desperate Housewives is there at the top, sad it went and of course RIP Kathyrin/Mrs. Mclusky
Perhaps I’m biased, but this is just another piece of evidence for me that CW was right to renew Hart of Dixie over the other options. Of course that won’t stop Secret Circle fans from complaining.
So – people hate the commercials on modern family the most (in volume) and on Grimm based on highest percentage.
Not sure why people are excited that folks are skipping commercials on their favorite shows – that’s kind of how the networks make money (for now – the network tv model will die, slowly, incrementally, but it’s going to die)
Not like I have a nielsen box anyway – but I haven’t watched a commercial except during a live sporting event in over a year.
Many of my favorite shows, NCIS, NCIS: LA, Person of Interest, Criminal Minds, Hawaii Five-0, Mike & Molly, Two Broke Girls, HIMYM, Big Bang Theory did well.
@ T You don’t get it. HOD ended up with a 0.64 18-49 demo rating. TSC ended up with a 0.77 rating. Both shows started to lose viewers after going on hiatus at the end of 2011. The difference is that HOD didn’t have nearly as far to fall and hit bottom faster. That’s not an endorsement for keeping either show. However, it’s also clear that the deciding factor in keeping HOD on the schedule was cost not content. HOD has a ridiculous plot and accordingly isn’t going to get any better. This TSC complainer believes that, given a choice, TSC was simply a more entertaining show and had potential for more than serving as schedule fodder until something else is found to replace it. I doubt if HOD will survive past next season. I also believe that Beauty, TSC’s de facto replacement, will never even get off the ground. So, let’s see if Pedowicz gets what he deserves for running his network on the cheap.
@Tom – I “get” the differences between the two in terms of ratings, including the larger percent increase shown here for HoD (the total average numbers/demos have been discussed to death elsewhere). It is possible to understand the facts and draw different conclusions from them, after all. Arguing that it’s a decision of cost vs. content is pointless as it’s news to absolutely no one. What did you think such decisions were based on? If TSC was worth it to them as a show, they would have kept it, regardless of fan opinion on the internet. They’ll make those same evaluations next year, just as any business would. Maybe HoD won’t cut it; maybe it will continue to surprise. They can only make decisions based on the information they have at the time, and I still am convinced they made the correct one when it came to their new shows this year. Of course, the CW couldn’t pay me enough money to watch TSC, which is just another reason that subjective matters such as content and entertainment value are best left out of the decision-making process.
