The season five premiere of True Blood was watched by 5.2 million viewers, down 4% from last season's premiere, but up 3% from the season 4 finale. A total of 6.3 million viewers  watched one of the show's two airings on Sunday.

    If it went up 3% from the last season’s finale I wouldn’t have stated that the show is down from last year. Maybe they meant 5.2 is down from last season’s entire average. A better caption would have been to say, “TB’s ratings up 3% from last seasons’ finale”. Who writes this crap? They need to be fired — and THEN thrown to the vampires!!!!!

    @Colin, @velouria00: HBO has more international subscribers than domestic, and Game of Thrones is the biggest international HBO show, so I sincerely doubt they’re hurting for viewership.

    @Gary S.: I’m pretty sure this is their second best episode ever (I didn’t check and am willing to be wrong if you have proof it isn’t), so saying “down is down” is a bit of a misnomer. It’s still incredibly high. I mean come on, 4% is well within the margin of error.

    I can’t believe True Blood has almost double the audience of Game of Thrones.

  • Tommy Mickens

    LOL at “True Blood ratings down”. It may be technically accurate, but then so would “True Blood ratings up” since it was up from the last episode.

    I don’t think there was any hidden motive in the headline, but it seems a bit oblivious.

    thats great

  • RyanCanada

    best episode every YES Tara is ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Melisandre

    @KS – where do you get your numbers from? GoT season finale was 4.2 mil for initial airing and .910 for a 5.112 total..TB had a total of 6.3 mil for two airings. Last time I took math 6.3 was not double 5.112.

  • FiddleStickxFiddler

    “Still better than any episode of Game of Thrones.”

    “HAHA GoT!”

    “GOT V TB? Both shows stink but both do fine ratings dont understand comparing them.”

    Nice to see a few people daring to speak ill of Game of Thrones. Feels like we aren’t allowed to do that these days. Watch out for the mob of G.R.R.M. fans as they show up to tell you all you’re just too thick to understand. Oh wait, @Melisandre sorta already did that in a veiled yet totally obvious way.

  • KS

    @Melisandre

    I wasn’t talking about finale. But, the rest of the episodes, had some 3 million plus viewers if I am not wrong. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but all I remember is 1-9 episodes had 3 million plus viewers. And this episodes got about 6 million plus viewers.

  • Melisandre

    @KS. And this was a season premiere. Finale’s and Premiere’s are both historically higher rateed.

  • Walysson

    It could’ve been worse if it was down from last season’s finale.

  • Melisandre

    PS – I do remember exact figures as I watch both. Mid season episodes were averaging just over 4 mil with both viewings. Still not double the 6 mil for the season premiere of TB. They both do well.

  • Melisandre

    @FiddleStickxFiddler I by no means said any such thing. What I said was I watch and enjoy both, for completely separate reasons.

    Tommy, while perhaps smarter for me to be oblivious to these comments maybe you meant “ambiguous.” I’ve modified the headline a little to make it less ambiguous.

    As for the comparison to last year’s premiere, that’s the standard industry/Nielsen convention.

  • Red Jane

    Come on people – True Blood is … True Blood – nobody tunes in for its intellectual values…

    Within the first minutes we had the reverend newly vampire and newly self-declared gay declaring his feelings to a naked very fit policeman and Pam in a Wal Mart yellow pyjamas with little kittens buried. Give it a few more minutes for Eric naked and shagging his vampsister…

    Welcome to the madness, nakedness and polished abs that is True Blood. I thought it was a pretty strong crazy premiere and hope S05 recovers the edge after a very irregular S04…

    @Robert Siedman

    come on robert. dont be disingenuous. (no show will ever match 100 percent meaning every preem is either going to be up or down) it’s fine actually… but by that same logic the headline could have been True Blood Biggest Drop Ever… and you still would be technically correct. this is the biggest drop for a season preem. or TRUE BLOOD LOSES MANY FANS… True Blood SHEDS Hundreds of Thousands… or it could have easily been True Blood Stays Steady… on and on. A headline was chosen for a reason. It wasn’t just just innocently being factual.

    i dont even watch the show

  • A

    Season 6, we are already ready.
    YES!

  • FiddleStickxFiddler

    @Melisandre

    When @velouria00 said:

    “Still better than any episode of Game of Thrones.”

    you replied directly:

    “That’s because you dont have to think to watch TB.”

    Sounds like a dig at True Blood fans intelligence to me, suggesting GOT fans are smarter.

  • Holly

    Am I the only one that finds the True Blood vs Game of Thrones…rivalry? as bewildering as the Hawaii 5-0 vs Castle thing?

  • Melisandre

    @FiddleStickxFiddler You can interpret any way you like, I have made it clear that I am a fan of BOTH shows so if you perceive some dig at the TB fans, well, then you’re just looking for slights, either that or I’m insulting myself as well.

    I think Red Jane above said it best “nobody tunes in for its intellectual values”. I’ve watched every season of TB, and was watching it before I was watching GoT (obviously). I, personally, think both shows are good and if someone who happens to like both shows makes a flippant comment, that does not automatically translate as an insult to viewers of TB.
