How Will TNT's 'Falling Skies' Rate in Its Return?

Update: Falling Skies drew 4.461 million viewers and  million and a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating in its season premiere, down from last year's premiere that drew a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating and 5.9 million viewers.

TNT's Falling Skies returns Sunday night at 9pm ET with a two-hour season premiere. The show is TNT's highest-rated scripted drama with adults 18-49 and yet last summer the show drew more negative comments for the highest-rated scripted show on a cable network than I've ever seen. We're used to seeing such negative commentary about high-rated reality shows and competitions, but not so much with scripted fare.

While the Dallas premiere drew more total viewers (6.863 million) than the Falling Skies premiere, Falling Skies bettered Dallas by 33% with adults 18-49 in its premiere.  Of note while most of the scripted fare that aired the Sunday before July 4 last year took hits due to a three day holiday weekend, Falling Skies was mostly impervious.

TNT has had almost a year to run repeats of the show and give it more exposure so all other things being equal I wouldn't be surprised if it ties or sets series highs. But all other things are not equal. With the NBA season running longer due to the fall lockout, Falling Skies will have to go up against game 3 of  the NBA finals on ABC. It will also have to go up against the end of golf's U.S. Open which could draw big ratings if it's close and Tiger Woods is still in the mix.

One red flag - at least several critics like the first few episodes of season two much more than season one. If I'm Turner head of programming Michael Wright of course I'd want good reviews, comments of praise on the Internet and good ratings. But if it's a "pick one" situation give me the good ratings!

Below is a poll for season two ratings and the season one historical ratings to aid in your prognostications.

Note: last year TNT counted the two-hour premiere as only one telecast for Nielsen purposes but counted the two-hour season finale as two telecasts.

    @Jason50, Alphas is the best scripted show on Syfy. The first season wasn’t boring. I thought FS was a tad boring last night.

  • scifi

    Maybe it’s time to stop to compare everything with Alphas? Who did begin it?! Different shows, different tone and different style.

    MY CAPS BUTTON WORKS CORRECTLY! YOUR BRAIN, ON THE OTHER HAND IS DEAD! DEAD! DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sparks

    I wish TNT would cancel Falling Skies and pick “V” up instead…

  • tvfreak

    @Richard Steven Hack: No time travel, huh? Guess that explains why you didn’t like The Event. Wait, that wasn’t so much time travel as excessive flashbacks.

    Would you be willing to try out Revolution on NBC this fall?

  • FattyMcFatso

    @One

    “DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

    Are you 12?

  • Jon

    Hard so say, I found the show unbearably boring/formulaic, I gave up after 4 episodes…I really wanted to like it to…

  • Jon

    @KarenM

    err what? Alphas was among the worst show Syfy has every produced. Poorly written, insultingly vague, bad acting and terrible dialogue to boot – you probably also liked ‘the cape’ didn’t you!

  • Figmo

    I like Falling Skies but the frequency and intrusion of the commercials during last nights episode made it all but unwatchable. I will try it again next week and, as much as I like the series, I’ll abandon it if the commercial interruptions are the same

  • FattyMcFatso

    @Figmo

    I agree about the commercials. It was ridiculous. No wonder so many people go the DVR route.

    Having no stake in the argument I am curious to one thing –

    People who are hating on this show or that show and saying it’s not quality sci-fi ( sorry, I’m old school ), can you please tell us what you consider a good sci-fi series ( past or present ) and why.

    Thanks.

    the premiere was amazing hope it goes up by alot

    The season premiere was much better than last season’s episodes. I kept with it because I saw the potential. Last season they tried to make it too much of a, for lack of a better word, “chick” show in between the action. Let’s face it, this is a show that would mainly appeal to guys. It’s The A Team with aliens. The second season start seems to realize that.

    The commercials WERE very annoying. It was an hour long story made two hours by commercials.

    Please do well

    Seriuosly whats the deal with TVbythenumbers? again it takes them almost 2 days before they update it?

    But anyways Falling Skies did 25% lower then last years premiere.

    and ended with around 6mill viewers in total.

    HOW DARE YOU INSINUATE IMMATURITY ON MY PART! SUCH BIG DRAMATIC MOMENTS ARE ALWAYS BEST REMEMBERED AT THE END OF ALL THINGS! YOU WILL BE VANQUISHED BY YOUR SHEER LACK OF INTELLIGENCE!

  • One @ sparks

    V was stupid, too. In fact, there’s almost no good genre programming nowadays…
