Melanie and Richard I agree with both of you. I think the writers are pretty sick to keep writing these dead baby stories. Give the viewers a reason to watch. I myself don’t have a reason to watch this crap.

  • John

Sorry Rich, just my opinion but for me happy couples equals boring viewing. I’m quite happy with all that’s happening on GH right now. Can’t wait to see each day.

  • Reva

John I have to disagree with you happy couples IMO bring in more viewers.

I was reading spoilers for gh earlier today and it sounds like the dead baby story is going to go on at least through the fall. I won’t watch gh as long as this dead baby story is on.

I read today that gh is moving to its new time in the fall now gh will be on at the same time as Days where i live. I started watching days a few weeks ago when i quit watching GH. This fall i will have to decide which soap to watch and right now that is Days.

  • Richard

John, That is fine that is your opinion. Either way you look at it there are a thousand different ways to keep a couple interesting besides killing a child esp. when the show has already done that and even done that this year.

Like I said if a writer can’t come up with something new and keeps repeating the same thing over and over and over then its time he hung up his computer and went back to school.

I’m glad you enjoy it. But I don’t and obviously I have good company not just from the ones who are posting here but 110,000 other folks in my age group who have tuned out too. Now the question is will they return or will more be joining them.

  • Melanie

@John, it is just that some of us love to see some real romance, that has been lacking for quite a while on GH, as opposed to constant doom and gloom which has dominated this show for the past year. Too bad RC cannot come up with some fresh and interesting storylines instead of being lazy and recycling what he did on OLTL. Sorry not interested in watching that, but that is just fine that you enjoy it.

  • Kayla Rae

To be quite honest, there is little that is truly “new” under the sun. Of course, ALL the soaps re-hash storylines and just mix it up a bit. It can’t be helped…it’s ALL been done before in all genres. It’s just the way the world works.

  • Kayla Rae

I don’t see anything wrong with a dramatic storyline involving the death of a baby. Sounds more interesting than just watching little jr. spit up on da-da’s shoulder time and again.

  • Melanie

@Kayla Rae, I don’t know if you watch GH, but the point is that they have had 3 baby deaths in the past year, (2 so far this year). That is just a little extreme I think. Yes and so true, when soaps have been on as long as they have, they all run into the bad habit of rehashing storylines. That just shows a big part of why they have taken such a hit ratings wise over the years. Too much of “been there done that” already and viewers get bored and tune out for good.

  • Kayla Rae

I get your point, Melanie, about GH covering too many baby deaths in a relatively short period of time.

Regarding what I said about “nothing new under the sun,” I think you misunderstood me. I’m saying that it’s impossible for the soaps or any tv shows/movies to really avoid revisiting similar themes, etc. in their storylines as that is the nature of the world, of humanity. All these topics have been covered before somewhere, somehow. The best they can hope to do is to switch up the situations/characters/flavors/tones of the events…but the fact is that supposedly “new” storylines are,in one way or another when you get right down to it, simply a re-telling, a re-imagining of storylines that have inevitably been done before in one format or another. That’s ok, that’s life. Unavoidable truth. Love it or leave it. As for me, I love it!

  • Richard

Kayla Rae, I see to a point what you are saying, but basically esp. with GH from what I seeing he not really changing anything up. He is not making it new or fresh. I didn’t watch some of the stories on OLTL but reading comments from here and other sites many of the stories he is retelling from OLTL are basically the same — to the point that many can predict what is going to happen. Even the reality show story they say is a direct copy of one on Y&R.

What I find funny is I’ve watched other shows in primetime either live or through DVD sets that have run for long periods of time and they were able to keep things fresh. Movies come up with ways to keep things fresh. Even authors who have written for years and years come up with ways to keep things fresh.

I have seen on some sites the ridiculous amounts of money that writers are paid to write soaps.

I have read and heard about Ron C. and how great he was for years now. The press has built him up, made him God, touted him as the savior of soaps, and fans have worshipped him. His fan boys and girls giving him a cutesy name and such. And I’ll tell you I have been totally unimpressed with him. I don’t see what the build up was all about. The only thing he has done is make me miss Guza. And that is bad.

  • Melanie

@Kayla Rae, Oh I understand what you mean now, I just thought you were talking about the soaps only.

  • Melanie

@Richard, yes, I too was specifically thinking about GH and those straight from OLTL copycat storylines. RC didn’t waste any time now did he? LOL.

  • TimsDale4ever

I can’t speak for Ron C.’s writing for GH but he did a exemplary job on OLTL for the last 13 months when I started watched. The stories were exciting and the pace was amazing, as well as encompassing ALL of the cast. No one seemed to be regulated to the back burner or the dreaded “here’s my shoulder to lean on” character which to me is the death of a character/actor. I’m sure it also helped that I did not know the history of this show very well so anything to me was basically OK — I wasn’t looking for him to bring back some character from 1974 — although he did some of that as well. He wasn’t scared to put someone over the age of 40 in front of the camera with THEIR OWN story either which is a big plus for me.

I had been looking since 2004 for a daytime soap to HOOK me again and I finally found it with OLTL. I still miss it to this day — even more so when I try to watch any of these last 4 shows that remain because they just have not grabbed me yet — and sadly, probably won’t.

  • Dee

I have been watching Y&R for many years and Bold and Beautiful on and off for years. Both of these shows are so boring that I end up recording them and not even watching them. The writers kill off all the interesting characters and keep the boring ones and just move them between beds. It is just insulting to a person’s intelligence.

I recently started watching GH and find it very interesting and can’t understand why the ratings aren’t higher. I think if more people realized how good the show is, the ratings would go way up. It reminds me a lot of One Life to Live and I sure hope they don’t cancel it.

  • Darcy

Dee I think the problem with GH’s ratings in all the baby deaths. If you started watching recently then you don’t know that there has been 3 baby deaths in a year and 2 in just a few months. The show has become very depressing.

  • Robert

GH’ is falling fast. The baby switch storyline ended it for me.GH’s lifetime is running out.

  • Robert

GH is so boring and sad . No romance, that’s why after 24 years I stopped watching GH last week.

  • Richard

I don’t know anything about the soaps yet or GMA but The Chew and The View were both up this last week. The Chew is still somewhat behind AMC a year ago in most categories but they are now 34% higher in the 18-34 demo than AMC a year ago. That means that The Chew is skewing young and that is what Frons and ABC wanted.

As Jay pointed out last week GH usually doesn’t follow the ABC trend. If the talk shows are down then GH is usually up. IF they are up, then GH is usually down.

It will be interesting to see the ratings when they come out.
