DVR Stockpiling: What's Piled Up On Your DVR?

I watch a ton of TV and with the exception of live sports, almost all of it via DVR. I knocked a lot of stuff out over the previous September-May TV season including every new episode of The Good Wife, Homeland, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, New Girl, Modern Family and 30 Rock. But lest you think I’m TV show snob, I also knocked out all the new episodes of Bones, House, Law & Order: SVU, NCIS, NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-0 (I  might have been drunk while watching Five-0). Further, I plowed through pretty much every original Law & Order which amounts to over 400 hours-worth of TV viewing that through my DVR viewing habits I knocked down to around 200.  And that doesn’t count my daily Monday-Friday dose of Around The Horn, PTI on ESPN and Intentional Talk on MLB Network.

But a lot of stuff piles up on my DVR.  As you can see just from the sliver above I’ve got 9 episodes of Archer, 23 episodes of Castle and 17 episodes of Grimm (along with some stuff I stored around Matt Cain’s perfect game). But there’s a lot you can’t see ranging from 22 episodes of Parks & Recreation, 11 episodes of The Middle, 6 episodes of Common Law. I even still have the final six episodes of Men of a Certain Age which I’m saving like a fine wine.

Though I have plenty of storage space (currently I have 3TB allocated) there are definitely periods of “DVR Bulimia” where I binge on a ton of stuff and then purge it off my DVR. For example I knocked out the entire first season of New Girl over a few days in late May and saved the second season of Louie up for a marathon over the Christmas holidays.  We’ll have some period this summer where we’re socked in with fog and I’ll blow through all the Parks & Recreation and Archer episodes.

Sometimes though there’s a big purging without any binging. My guess is that’s what will happen with season two of The Killing.

There are a lot of shows I like just fine but am happy to wait to see them some other time. If not for this blog, I’d probably let everything pile up because I’d much rather watch 2-3 episodes of Game of Thrones at a time than wait for them to be doled out a week at a time. But I also hate spoilers.  The DVR stockpile does give me an idea of which shows I like more (certainly Game of Thrones among them) and I’d have to cop to liking Suits and White Collar (no DVR stockpile) more than Royal Pains (8 episodes piled up).

What’s piled up on your DVR?

    Old episodes of Bonanza.

  • Carol

Cable company killed my supply so I’m slowly rebuilding my set of POI. That show really rewards second (and third) viewings. So well written, directed, and acted. And the production values are first rate. Don’t record any other show since I gave up on House when he crashed into Cuddy’s dining room.

From the regular season on my DVR, all I have is Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. Just finished Revenge, and I have Switched At Birth (and possibly Grimm) on my phone. I’m almost done! (:

I hate the first season of the killing… But the second one was awesome. REALLY. You need to watch it

  • Roswell

The entire 4th season of 90210

  • iggy.

12 hours of movies from this morning (IFC and TCM mostly)
11 hours of science shows from yesterday (Science and PBS, currently watching them)

I DVR the nightly news so I can just watch the five minutes of actual news.

First off what kind of DVR do you have that has that much space?

I currently have the miniseries of the Hatfields & McCoys, The new seasons of Suits, Necessary Roughness, Franklin & Bash and all the episodes of new shows like Dallas and Saving Hopes as well as several movies and other single episode shows.

Revenge, 2 Broke Girls, Cougar Town (finale was last night in my country), Don’t Trust the B. and Chelsea Lately.

  • Christina

Stockpiled the entire season of Bad Girls Club: Las Vegas and Tanisha Getting Married on my upstairs DVR. Downstairs, I have the entire season of Couples Therapy and Celebrity Rehab Revisited. Yup, real high-class television there.

I’m trying to catch up with season 5 of the Big Bang Theory, I’m up to episode 16, I believe.. I have MOST of the episodes on my DVR, just hoping that CBS re-airs a few episodes I need.

Couple of Behind The Music’s, E! True Hollywood Stories and ESPN documentaries are still on there, I should get around to watching them.

As for current shows I’m watching, well that list is too long to count, but I need to watch Jane By Design, Real Housewives of Orange County, Love in the Wild and Tough Love New Orleans this weekend.

Brandon /John: my DVR is a Windows PC w/Windows Media Center using a four-tuner infinityTV DVR card from Ceton Corp ( uses a CableCard.

I can pretty much allocate as much hard drive space as I want to it, though realistically I don’t see ever going over 2TB since I’m mostly a “watch it once and delete” user rather than trying to amass a media library.

I’m happy to say I have nothing stored on the DVR – I pretty much catch up on my shows within a week or two of their original airing (plus my DVR is disc only and it’ll only hold 4 hours per disc – I watch a lot on hulu from fall through spring), but thanks to Netflix (streaming and discs) this summer I’m watching Supernatural (I’m through part of season 5 now, and I caught all the available bloopers on YouTube yesterday). In the queue I’ve also got all of Fringe, Alias (we started season 2 Thursday), Pushing Daisies, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (seen it all before, I just have it there for when I run out of stuff to watch), Curb Your Enthusiasm (long wait though), Breaking Bad (long wait – for it and Curb I keep pushing disc two further down the list so I can get the first discs first), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 30 Rock (I’ve seen each episode, this is just streaming for when I run out of stuff or need a shorter show to watch to break up all the SPN, etc.), Hatfields & McCoys (dvds come out on Netflix next month) – and it seems my Netflix queue is almost all TV shows with some movies thrown in. I don’t have cable, so Netflix is the only way I can watch certain cable shows. Some stream and some are disc only. They don’t have season 3 of Archer there yet. I added season 7 of SPN to the wait list for when it comes out so I can maybe see the discs after I’m done with S6. I own the DVDs for Cougar Town and P&R and I’ve re-seen all the episodes now, renewing my love for those two comedies. P&R in particular had lots of fun outtakes and commentaries for seasons 1-3. I’m caught up on Breaking Bad and Weeds, just as far as the available DVDs and streaming took me – now waiting for the next releases. And now I’ll go see Steve Carell’s new movie.

For me it’s Supernatural Season 7 reruns, which I can’t watch yet b/c I’m also catching up on previous seasons with TNT’s 2 hours of reruns each morning. Latest episode for me was 5.08 – “Changing Channels.” It’s my favorite from S5 thus far… :)

  • Kate

Right now I have episodes of

    Burn Notice
    Nurse Jackie
    Once Upon A Time

    And a couple of movies.
