TCM Announces Schedule for Summer Under the Stars 2012

Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Gene Kelly among the Legends Spotlighted in TCM’s SUMMER UNDER THE STARS in August
Month-Long Celebration of Hollywood’s Brightest Stars Showcases a Different Actor or Actress Each Day
Turner Classic Movies’ (TCM) ultimate movie star showcase – SUMMER UNDER THE STARS – is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year as TCM once again pays tribute to 31 different stars in 31 days. This year’s roster shines a spotlight on such legendary stars as John Wayne (Aug. 1), who opens the month with a lineup that includes three John Ford and two Howard Hawks classics; gold-medalist-turned-actor Johnny Weissmuller (Aug. 3), whose day coincides with 2012 Summer Olympics in London, as well as the 100th anniversary of the creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan character; Marilyn Monroe (Aug. 4), who is being featured for the first time in SUMMER UNDER THE STARS, marking the 50th anniversary of her death; Elvis Presley (Aug. 16), whose day marks the 35th anniversary of his death; and Gene Kelly (Aug. 23), whose wife, Patricia Ward Kelly, will join TCM host Robert Osborne to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the actor-director-choreographer’s birth; and Ingrid Bergman (Aug. 29), whose day marks the 30th anniversary since her death.
This year, nearly half of this year’s actors and actress featured in SUMMER UNDER THE STARS are first-timers to the month-long event. In addition to Weissmuller and Monroe, the list of 14 newcomers includes:

The 2012 edition of SUMMER UNDER THE STARS also features 27 films making their first appearances on TCM, including Hiroshi Inagaki’s Samurai trilogy (1954-56 – Aug. 9); the all-star drama Night Flight (1933 – Aug. 10), which was recently restored and screened at the TCM Classic Film Festival; the delectable Agatha Christie mystery Evil Under the Sun (1982 – Aug. 11); the special-effects extravaganza Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959 – Aug. 9); the allegorical drama The Madwoman of Chaillot (1969 – Aug. 18); the endearing Tom Brown’s School Days (1940 – Aug. 18); the 1938 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped (Aug. 18); the historical epic Mohammed: Messenger from God(1976 – Aug. 20); the 1957 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises (Aug. 25); and Michael Mann’s stylish thriller Thief (1981 – Aug. 31).
