    @ Kevin

I agree with that. None of us obviously have a crystal ball, but that’s exactly what I think is going to happen now too. ABC/Disney will let Katie Couric’s show launch peacefully and if GH’s ratings don’t show marked improvement in the next few months, the cancellation will probably be announced sometime in the fall. They very well could let April 1-5, 2013 be GH’s final week to put it in the history books as a 50-year program.

  • Michele

I have not watched in years but does DOOL still air at noon on the west coast? So, what show would GH be going up against at 1pm pacific time?

  • Melanie

@rob, All it said is that it will celebrate its golden anniversary on April 1. Nothing guaranteed it will last until then though. However, unless its ratings pick up and stay there, then it should definetely make it until then.

@JayTN, Thanks for clearing that up about the history of local affiliates airing soaps. I thought I did hear that somewhere that they can decide whether they want it to air at that time. I do remember some soaps in the past were aired at different times based on what the affiliates wanted as opposed to its normal airtime.

  • Sean

HOPEFULLY GH can get that 18-49 up fast…PLEASE WATCH GH!

  • TimsDale4ever

That’s great news for GH fans at least you have it until Sept, but IT DOES NOT SAY THAT IT IS ON ALL THE WAY TO APRIL. I read the above differently than everyone else — yes the 50th anniversary is April 1st IF the show is still running then.

  • TimsDale4ever

GUIDING LIGHT’s 60th TELEVISION anniversary is this June 30th, 2012 (from 1952) but it’s been off the air for 3 years now. But having said all that, if the show is still producing in Sept (dont’ they run 6 months ahead?), that would be just about enough finished episodes to get them to April lst — so who knows?

  • Michele

@TimsDale – I think they tape 6wks in advance (if that is what you were asking).

  • Jeff

This actually sounds like a small vote of confidence. GH fans will take what we can get!

  • Terrie

It’s a shame after so many years GH had the time slot for 3pm that they stoop so low to put Katie in it’s place. It won’t make a different to me because I have no intention on watching her show. My tv and DVR will be on 2pm only every day. The rest of the morning and daytime shows can fail. If only GH could go on some other channel besides ABC. Perhaps HLN could pick them up.

  • Phil

So its The Chew, GH, and Katie, then local news at 4.

  • Hunter

“Days of Our Lives” airs at 12:00 PM, not 1:00 PM throughout the midwest … besides why is everybody bringing up the POOR MAN’S SOAP OPERA anyways?

  • rob60990

Oh I thought you were talking about that rumor that was going around that affiliates would either air GAA or GH. I already knew all that but thanks. Honestly, if affiliates are still airing The Revolution and still air lower rated The Chew, then why not General Hospital?

  • Chrisann D

Hey!!! A Press release from ABC about General Hospitol! I think thats good news. At least they are willing to spend a little to promote the best Soap on TV. Looking forward to GHs 50th and beyond!! (keeping fingers crossed)

From reading this press release, the only thing for GH that seems locked in to me is that starting on Sept. 10, it will move one hour earlier when Katie begins. But it does not specify how long GH is guaranteed to air at 2 pm.

Yes, it states that April 1, 2013 will be GH’s 50th anniversary, 50 years to the day since the show first premiered. But it does not specify that the show is guaranteed to still be on the air come that date. That’s the way I interpreted the second paragraph. I assume it will be because it’s such a rare milestone worth celebrating, but that’s not spelled out in the press release. If the ratings don’t shoot up fast and if GAA is a success, I wouldn’t put it past ABC to end the show in January.

GH fans should be cautiously optimistic about reaching the anniversary and perhaps beyond, but don’t be delusional. After all, this is ABC we’re talking about here. We all saw what happened with AMC and OLTL. Just sayin’.

Days does not air at that time everywhere. It was even posted on one site that someone around Chicago it airs an hour later.

Here in my time zone and affiliate area, it used to air opposite GH and GL and after Passions and Another World. For several years now it has aired at 1:00 p.m. central against OLTL and The Talk until OLTL was cancelled. Now it airs opposite OLTL and The Revolution and will air against GH when GH moves the time zone.

And looking at boards today Days seems to be the talk of the town over some news of a character returning. So who knows if that will translate into viewers for Days or not.

I also know that many people are posting on boards that with the move they will have to choose between Days and GH — so Days obviously airs in that time slot across many areas of the States.

There are also some people saying that their affiliate is already promoting the new timeslots for GH and for Katie. Others are saying that their affiliate is only promoting Katie and not even mentioning GH at all.

So who knows what is going on. It will be some interesting months ahead — kind of its own little soap opera. What will ABC do is Good Afternoon America scores good ratings? What will happen if GH continues to lose the key demo as they have done for 2 weeks? What will happen as more and more people lose SoapNet — will they watch live or DVR the show from ABC or just drop it?

Lots of stuff besides just the writing will be affecting GH’s ratings in the next few months. It will be interesting to watch. Actually a heck of a lot more interesting than the show is right now.

  • Darcy

This now puts GH up against Y&R where I live. Right now I’m not watching GH but I am watching Y&R. THis fall I will have to decide between Y&R and GH and right now Y&R is winning.

  • Richard

Yes TJ, I remember wholeheartedly how they did with that and I didn’t even watch either show. They were treading out the stars of the shows to say they were safe and denied either show was in danger.

That is why they are always so vague in these press releases and not putting anything into words about how long or anything. They are definitely keeping themselves open while at the same milking all the publicity they can by mentioning the 50th.

  • Jim

The CBS affiliate in Atlanta currently shows Y&R at 3pm. The NBC affiliate used to show DAYS at 3pm so yes, local affiliates can choose when they show any network show. In primetime our ABC affiliate will sometimes show local specials or old movies and then air the network programming at 2am.

  • PMR

Most markets air DOOL at 1pm, Y&R at 1230 and B&B at 130pm so GH will be by itself at 2pm where OLTL and ATWT aired. This could be a good thing for the ratings.
