Oh NBC had buyer remorse. Very much so. They kept shooting themselves in the foot every time Letterman got offered to do special events and get special articles. They even thought of swamping out Leno for Letterman at the last second. This is probably half true because, as Carson pointed out, NBC could be luring Letterman away from a competing network.
I think Leno lost his touch when he stopped being observational and became topical. You know… “What’s My Beef” like his observation of the phone company punishing you as if you were a teenager getting grounded. You can even see it today. Leno will make observations in politics and come up with some pretty decent jokes, and then the topical stuff comes up and its back to the joke machine with predictable punchlines.
Are you guys really giving that much weight to anything Mario says? REALLY?
Jeez.
Brad and Chris, I saw that Ed McMahon interview on TV almost 10 years ago! Come on! You guys don’t record every little thing you see on TV!
Close but no cigar Mario.
Thanks for playing.
