I like the GH stories involving todd and heather but the rest especially the DID story involving kate and her history to me is just boring. I said it before i believe that is why the numbers r down why give such a strong story to a character that has no link to the community of port charles. If it was maxie, or lulu or kristina i could get on board at least then alot of the cast could have been involved bc they all have strong ties to multiple characters in port charles. Kate does not so who really cares even olivia doesnt really care she is spending most of her time trying to bring down heather

  • Dani

Frankly most of GH is just a retread of stories on OLTL and while I think those stories were done better there, they still stunk.

I am loving B&B still and the location shoot in Italy was fantastic. Plus Days is boring as hell. Watch B&B to see how a real coming out should be done. Karen coming out to Bill was great.

    B&B FTW!

The biggest thing that bothers me about the Kate story is that not only what you mention but to me what I have watched of Kate since Kelly Sullivan began playing her — the character never seemed like the same Kate we got to know before.

And now that so much of her story has seemed to be rewritten since RC took over, there just doesn’t seem to be any other semblance to the old character except name and family relations.

Add to that when I look at Sonny and Kate standing together now there is no way I can even believe that the two of them are supposed to be about the same age and have a strong detailed past together. And it seems so apparent in the few clips I have seen on You Tube recently or posted on other boards that Kate is supposed to be the mother of a character presently on the air. But looking at the two it doesn’t even seem possible.

This storyline and the baby switch stories to me seem to be the stories they want to push as their A stories, but neither really have anything to draw people in. And yes you read a few comments online saying they like them, but you also read many who trash both stories.

I am still in the boat that the only thing I enjoy about the show when I tune is — is Heather. And that is because of Robin Mattson’s portrayal not any of the stories she is involved in. She is just a great actress who can make you enjoy her scenes. She is one of those ram gems that can turn crappy writing into something enjoyable. Jane Elliot is another of those but I have just hated her fascination with Luke. I think Tony Geary is still a great actor, but I just cannot see him as romantic leading man type anymore. His character has been so damaged and the way Luke acts — sorry I can’t see why any woman would want him.

  • Robert

Not surprised by GH’s ratings. The show is junk. Young and Restless and The Bold and The Beautiful have the only shot for survival. Watch Good Afternoon America on Monday.

  • Rob47

I’ve been watching GH since I was a junior in high school, I am now 47 years old. The writing and story flow have improved tremendously in the last several months in my opinion. The scenes are shorter and tighter and bounce back and forth to add some excitement to the stories. I love the Heather character coming back and having her interacting with so many of the other main characters. Only thing is I wish they would have made her scheming a little more subtle and calculating instead of a raving maniac. I mean man, she’s kidnapped Luke Spencer within a couple months of returning!

  • Richard

Dani, I just hope that B&B will finally get some press results for their big comeback in the ratings.

I can not even begin to fathom why the soap magazines and the online journalist have not done something on B&B and why its ratings are doing so well.

Plus B&B has a gay story going and you still hear more about Days gay story from the soap press. Except for comments on some boards you would hardly even know that B&B has a gay story going.

And just look at the numbers. I know it is in HH that is not one the coveted demo but how long has it been since any soap was up .4 from last year in a regular week of episodes. Maybe OLTL or AMC did it the last week of episodes, but this was a regular week of episodes in the summer at that.

I have never seen an episode — maybe a few clips when the Emmys used to show clips — but what B&B has done this last year just seems amazing to me — as far as their ratings story. And esp. how they did it with no hype from the press or their fans.

GH is horrible Not one good storyline and all these OLTL characters taking over like it’s their show . These new writers want GH to get canceled. who wants to see women getting raped, babies being killed and kidnapped this is not entertaining that’s the reason why OLTL GOT CANCELED! I don’t expect this show to last it will be canceled by next year January. I watch GH for GH characters and GH storylines not for one life to live stupid non talented actors! Some of these male actors are horrible to look at

  • Melanie

Great job Y&R and B&B!! I have really been enjoying both of these shows lately. Sorry, but I no longer watch GH for the same reasons some of you all (Richard, Dani, Robert and Maria) have already mentioned. I have read some recaps on another board and see I haven’t been missing anything. Same ole stale boring stuff and am not surprised that the ratings have taken another dip. Anyways, keep up the good work Y&R and B&B!

  • Travis27 in Virginia!

I’ll watch GH only if they get Erica Sleezak on as Vicki. Or any soap still on for that matter. The best soap character of all time!

Nick wrote: “Geberal Hospital is up year to year by 78K total viewers, but down 85K W18-49. I think Nielsen just makes this up.”

And what would be the interest of Nielsen to “just makes this up”?????????????

I place The Revolution at no more than 20% for the cause of General Hospital’s dismal ratings. I think that overall, people are just tired of GH’s lackluster stories. Some are also tired that Sonny is the protagonist of the show and would like for that position to be filled by the Quartermaines and/or Luke. Also, I don’t think that it is in the interest of GH that Good Afternoon America does better than The Revolution in the ratings. You don’t want to give diabolical ideas to ABC.

  • Derrick

DAYS, come on now. You gotta do better than this…….

As for Y&R and B&B, they’re NOT going anywhere. Very impressive gain. WOWWWWWW!

  • Chrisann D

I find it confusing that so many think GH is doom and gloom. Yes there are the baby death stories. But there is Luke/Heather John/Sonny/Jason Spinelli/Sam Anna/Tracy/Luke all these and more stories going on that are actually funny and not doom and gloom. As far as GH being OLTL with the cast crossing over. You don’t see alot of them in the main story.Sometimes I really think I am watching a totally different show than others on here are. I get we all don’t enjoy the same show or writing styles…but such huge differences….just seems like we are watching different shows. As far as John kissing Sam….well in all fairness they are not bringing Natalie and Liam over so they (the writers) have to end the relationship somehow. Why not with Sam? or Anna?

  • Rich

I think General Hospital was been doing well storyline wise…..And doom and gloom, SOAP OPERA’s Best moment came out of a Doom and Gloom story in which Luke raped Laura……The only thing I would say would make General Hosptial better is to focus less on the mob storylines and progress on the other stuff.

AS far as McBain, if Natalie is not coming to the show, then what do they do with him. They have to have him move on. And some of soap operas best characters were crossover characters, such as SKYE CHANDLER!!!!!! Marco DANE!!!!!!

GH just won another Daytime Emmy for best drama, it has to be doing something right! People just don’t watch anymore because there are more people working, and when SOAPS were at their peak, Cable was just getting started and there was no internet!!!!!!

TV ratings in general are down, so it is not just the soaps!

  • ragincajun

Hopefully, these ratings will serve as proof to Maria Arena Bell that viewers will return to the show if you write good storylines for fan favorites. It has been a long time since I have been as invested in the show as I have with with the Ricky/Paul storyline. Hopefully, the show will continue its resurgence with the upcoming Phyllis/Christine showdown.

  • FlabbyKneeCapsOfDeath

The drop in daytime soap ratings is all down to the writing. It’s terrible 99% of the time. It’s like soap writers from the 70’s are still churning this stuff out, but they didn’t bother to try change with the times or do any better at all. As a result, we’re still getting psychos on a rampage, back from the dead plots, amnesia, and every other soap tried and tested cliche there is. I watch Y&R most of the time, but even that, which I consider the best of the lot, is becoming unbearable.

  • Daysfan

wonder iF DAYS Numbers will go up once Eileen Davidson comes back ….the numbers for DAYS was high when she was on in the 90’s, as long as they don’t screw it up like they do with a lot of characters that come back- Jack (no significant storyline), Kayla ( she’s finally out of the pub lately though…), Billie ( boring), Austin (What a WUSS this time), etc, etc…

  • Chris

    @ Rich

Yes, TV ratings in general are down-not just in daytime, but also primetime, late night, etc. There’s much more TV/media competition these days and fewer available viewers to go around at any time.

But the key reason why daytime soaps are taking such a huge hit is because of the high production costs.(Of course, the widespread lousy writing isn’t helping either) If most fans/viewers truly grasped just how expensive these shows are to make on a regular basis, I don’t think there’d be this much griping over past and potential future cancellations.

I agree that it’s very sad to see these shows going off and on life support (I loved and still miss AMC), but I don’t blame the networks for wanting to save money in this economy. Like it or not, TV is a business and networks have to answer to their stockholders. When you think about it, it really is bad business for any network to spend roughly $50 million/year ($1 million/week or $200,000/episode) year after year on a show that attracts as few as 2-2.5 mil viewers/day, with a small fraction in the W18-49 demo that advertisers care about. That yields an increasingly small amount of ad revenue to offset the constant high costs.

Good soap opera-type storytelling on TV certainly is alive and well as we see in primetime with shows that air once a week for 15-25 episodes/season, but the reality is that the longtime 5-new-episodes/week, year-round daytime soap format is dying and no longer cost-effective to turn enough of a profit in many places. Maybe GH and DOOL fans would be better off devoting their energy into trying to lobby ABC and NBC (respectively) into somehow reformatting the shows into some kind of ongoing primetime drama.

Chrisann D wrote: “As far as GH being OLTL with the cast crossing over. You don’t see alot of them in the main story.”

I actually agree with this statement. I think that the whole “GH is being turned into OLTL 2.0″ is overstated. A few borrowed Llanview storylines and sets hardly make the show “OLTL 2.0″. The constant gangster wars (that doesn’t seem to ever wanting to go away) is enough in itself to make me realize that the show is undeniably General Hospital, not One Life to Live.

And if Cartini really have the intention of turning GH into OLTL, it is almost a certainty that ABC will intervene. Do people seriously think that ABC will allow GH, its most popular soap opera and a show that virtually all Americans know, being metamorphosed into a soap opera that was cancelled and that is hardly known outside the soap opera community?

YR was great this week, no shocked by the ratings increase. GH and Days are done, they are running on Guiding Light numbers. Bummer
