“TV ratings in general are down, so it is not just the soaps!”

People have used this excuse so much that I honestly believe the powers that be behind soaps actually take it as a legitimate excuse.

The problem is if that is a reason to roll over and say ok then what do you do with a show like B&B who bucks the trend.

People need to quit looking and saying well ratings are down anyway so lets just be happy. Instead they need to say why are they down? Or why can one show buck the trend but we can’t? Or even why in the midst of the competition out there would people rather watch a rerun of an old primetime show or a talk show than watch what we offer.

    *******

As to the crossover thing, yes there have been crossovers before. But you folks cannot fault people for being upset seeing John or any of them move on.

I have been trying to find out about these folks when I was going to try to watch GH and I found that many of these folks had big fan bases as part of couples and stuff on OLTL.

Many of the cross overs in the past the cross over character was not part of a big couple. Or basically their story had pretty much ended when they came to GH.

Plus those crossovers for the most part didn’t come as part of a show cancellation.

If fans of the old couples — in this instance John and Natalie — are upset then RC and FV have no one to blame but themselves. They created those couples and RC wrote for them on OLTL. And as bitter as OLTL fans were already — esp. with as they say no closure on OLTL — then he can’t expect any thing but anger when he takes the few closures the fans got and immediately tears them apart on a new show. some of them less than six months after the show went off the air.

Those 2 men have dealt with OLTL fans for years, so better than anyone they should know how passionate OLTL fans are.

And it has been said countless times by the fans themselves that they did this to draw OLTL fans over so they could save GH. Well they should have know again that OLTL fans were going to be happy with them tearing apart the couples they loved.

Folks you can’t have it both ways. I don’t understand what some of you want. You just seem to want fans to shut up and accept whatever RC and FV do. Sorry but not all of us fans are robots who just sit there and watch without any emotional attachment at all. Maybe Ron C or Frank V illicit that blind attachment from some of you but thankfully not all fans. I am glad there are some fans out there willing to call them out on some of the stuff they do.

When DOOL and GH both come on the same time in Sept. here. I’ll have to give up one of them. I”m tired of trying to record stuff on a VCR. Not everyone can afford a DVR.. So may the best soap win.

  • Richard

    @Dave.A

If it is their intention to cancel the show or to find a way to cancel it then I doubt they would even care what FV and RC do with the show.

And I honestly still don’t think their intentions have changed. I believe it is still true that last year ABC wanted all 3 gone. And I firmly believe that the only reason GH was saved was by Frons fighting for it.

And I firmly believe that the only thing that saved GH was The Revolutions big failure.

I don’t think that ABC cares one bit about fixing GH. I think they are doing just as little as they can to make it seem they do, and milking things for the publicity they can get out of it.

Frankly I think the soap press and that includes these know it all bloggers online hurt vs help these shows. Frankly GH is crap and no one will convince me Carvaliti is good in fact the ass licking the bloggers and soap press give Carlivati and Days for that sucky coming out story and that rapemance couple of EJ and Sami just makes me hate them more. They have all been lambasting Maria Bell at Y&R for years and no she isn’t good but Y&R is no worse than GH. And they ignore the best show B&B. Frankly let them continue kissing Carvilatis Ass until GH is cancelled.

  • Cath

On GH instead of decreasing the mob presence we get more mobsters. Oh great! The reality show story is stupid too but I guess it is the idiotic way to introduce Kate’s phantom son. As for the comment about age differences Sonny, Kate, and Olivia, all three do not seem to have been in high school together, but they do this all the time on this show. Kristina should be 17 or 18, having just gone off to college from high school and she looks like she is in her late 20s and Kate’s kid would be almost as old as Dante which would be early 30s. There is no rhyme or reason to these time lines.

I bet a lot of people are getting exasperated with all of this because they were hoping that the mob stories would go away with a new team.

DAYS’ ratings are absolutely pathetic. Even cancelled OLTL never went that low.

@Davey, you copied and pasted the wrong dailies. Those were last week’s.

“These new writers want GH to get canceled. who wants to see women getting raped, babies being killed and kidnapped this is not entertaining”

Because Guza never did any of this…

  • JayTN

Rich…I don’t really pay much attention to the various award shows (the Emmys, Oscars, Grammys, etc.) because they really don’t matter much. Emmy voters have said in the past that they don’t necessarily watch the TV shows nominated, but base their vote on either the campaign that the shows’ producers put on, or the press and attention a particular show gets. That fact makes winning an award even less special. After all, the writing team at “Days” won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing…despite the fact that they have since been fired. Didn’t “Guiding Light” win an Outstanding Daytime Drama award a year or two before it was canceled?

I don’t normally comment on soap storylines, but I agree with the person who said that “Days” is boring. I watch off and on and find myself fastforwarding thru 90% of the show. Personally, I don’t really like the character of Will anymore. Like other gay characters, once they come out of the closet, the writers struggle to find storylines for them…which usually results in that character being sidelined or written out (i.e. Lucas on GH). I don’t know if Chandler Massey (Will) is being told how to act or not, but his character’s constant giggling/laughing during his encounters with the evil EJ is becoming annoying. Will wanting to be a big shot businessman, running a large company, is also beyond believability. This is a character who did not fully understand the concept of double jeopardy a couple months ago when Will was being blackmailed by EJ.

The material from new head writers Gary Tomlin and Chris Whitesell won’t start airing until after the Olympic break, but they couldn’t be any worse than the fired duo of Marlene McPherson and Darrell Thomas…the same people who just collected that Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Writing!

  • Richard

    @Rich,

For some reason when I read your comment before I missed the comment about the Emmy win for GH. I didn’t go back and look until I read Jay’s comment.

Jay is right in that the awards are based on campaigns many times. Also block voting. But the biggest thing concerning an Emmy is they are based on 2 episodes.

GH submitted two very powerful episodes last year and they won on those 2 episodes. They also basically had little to do with the current regime as the episodes were made last year even before Guza left the show and was replaced by Wolfe.

I don’t know if it was campaigning or just that people didn’t see the talent but Ron C. or Frank V. weren’t able to garner nominations for OLTL in the top category. It should have been an easy nomination for them with all the sentimental favor on their side. Who knows if it was sour grapes or just the fact that they chose the wrong episodes to submit for the nominations.

They do get one more chance next year since they have some shows that can be deemed eligible in this time period. Maybe a week or so. So technically they could come out and win the Best Daytime Drama of 2012 based on a week or so worth of episodes.

A “few” borrowed storylines? GH is now simply OLTL with different actors. The stories are EXACTLY THE SAME, right down to the Emmy-bait “look at me act!” DID story with Kate; swapped babies; women lawyers; rapists; psychos. Yes, soaps have done this same stuff for years, but this is an exact replica.

You could always tell what was going to happen on GH, but what you never knew was HOW (anyone else remember how mousy librarian Lucy Coe revealed her real sexpot self? Now THAT was a surprise). Does anyone doubt for a minute who Kate’s son is? And who the father is? Did you not see that baby switch coming 6 miles down the road? Does anyone really think Heather will get away with kidnapping Luke?

The show out and out sucks.

  • jo

Days need to keep the same writers, the story line is all over the place. Soaps need to understand this is the twenty first century and quit dragging this crap on so long. Get a clue.

  • Katherine

    @rob60990

“These new writers want GH to get canceled. who wants to see women getting raped, babies being killed and kidnapped this is not entertaining”

Because Guza never did any of this…

I’m missing your point here. Obviously Guza was doing a lot of these type of storylines as well as putting GH’s focus on the mob instead of the Quartermaines, etc…

This wasn’t working for Guza, so how does it make sense for the new producers/writers to continue the same storylines???

  • Kayla Rae

DOOL will be on the air long after 2013, mark my words!

  • Kayla Rae

GH bores me to death other than Heather…she’s the only character for the most part on that thing that I can bear to watch!

Days’ gay storyline is superior to B&B and so, naturally, it gets more press on that.

Days is so interesting and keeps me drawn in! Go Days!

  • Kayla Rae

I couldn’t disagree with you more, Jay, regarding Will on Days. I find Chandler Massey’s portrayal of Will fascinating…can’t get enough of him! I also think that Days very much deserved the “best writing” emmy this year.

    Go Days!

  • JayTN

Kayla Rae…I’m not disagreeing with you on Chandler Massey’s portrayal of Will as a whole. Going into the Daytime Emmy awards, he was considered a shoo-in to win, and did. I just find it a little bit irritating to have him giggle/laugh after every other word when talking to EJ. I don’t notice him doing it during his interaction with other characters. I don’t know if the writers have told him to act a little nervous around EJ, and some people tend to laugh or giggle when nervous.

We can, however, agree to disagree about the writing on “Days”. Gary Tomlin has a long resume when it comes to writing/producing soaps and Chris Whitesell has been around the block before as well. Both of these men are more than capable to improving “Days” and I hope that they do. As far as Marlene McPherson and Darrell Thomas, I would have fired them long before NBC/Sony reportedly ordered Corday to do so.

  • Kevin

    @Kayla Rae

Have you seen DOOL’s latest ratings at the top of this page? I would not be so certain about DOOL having a rosy future if I were you. You’re fooling yourself if you think that the show is 100% safe past 2013. It’s truly a complete unwatchable mess and judging by these dismal numbers, the masses seem to agree and are abandoning it in droves. Quite frankly, these numbers absolutely warrant cancellation for the show. OLTL never sunk as low as this when it was axed. A paltry 456,000 viewers in the key W18-49 demo is an absolute embarrassment for a program with a roughly $50 million annual price tag. At this point now, I’d truly be shocked if DOOL and GH are still on the air past September 2013.

  • Uisa

Y&R has been so amazing lately. I haven’t seen Y&R for two years and started back watching it last week after my friend told me how good its been lately. They’ve actually gone back to the basics lately and the pace of the show is better. I think the ratings for Y&R picks up in the coming weeks.

If Y&R is good it will get back to 5-6 million viewers by the end of the year.

Kayla Rae I’m optimistic as well about DAYS staying on past 2014. It seems like ever since 2007 there’s been this threat that DAYS won’t be around and its still one of the last ones standing. The track record isn’t good for people predicting this show going off the air. Sony always does such a great job keeping the licensing fee down for NBC to keep renewing it. Although DAYS has hit new lows the past few years they’ve been able to grow in and out like Jamey was showing on the first page, 2.5 million early in the week before the dip.

GH might continue too but its tricky because we know ABC wants to get rid of it. I think GH will still be on past its 50th anniversary. The new timeslot should help it.

  • Uisa

    @ Kevin

Jamey showed the ratings on the first page, DAYS did well in the beginning of the week before dipping.

Like I said before the track record isn’t good for predicting DAYS ending, people have been doing that since Zucker announced it in 2007 and its still here so who should I believe you or Kayla Rae? You do the math son.

  • Champion

Y&R has been ridiculously good lately!

This is the first week where I’ve actually enjoyed RC’s writing on GH.

  • Justin

Agree with Kayla Rae and Uisa. How could anyone find Days boring currently? Stefano, the show’s biggest villian for the past 30 years is now dead and involved in a murder mystery…Lexie, a beloved character just passed away from cancer leaving her recently unemployed husband to look after their autistic son…Will came out of the closest…Melanie has been kidnapped…Brady is back on drugs. There’s been a great mixture of real life drama and more dramatic story arcs then there has been in years.

Yes the ratings suck, but the ratings suck for pretty much every show on television aside from reality tv that viewers vote on as you tend to need to watch those shows live. It’s the 21st century, their are DVR’s and multiple other resources to view these shows. No need to blame the show for the bad ratings…it’s modern day technology that is behind this and unless the networks come up with a new strategy on how to charge advertisers then the shows will be cancelled..it’s that simple.

PS – How do you aquire a Neilson box in the states anyway? I’m Canadian and I don’t think we use them here…not sure how the networks generate revenue for advertising here. Weird.
