Lovers Rejoice, Haters Despair: the Sky Is Not Falling in on TNT’s ‘Falling Skies’

Scientists at CERN’s LHC (Large Hadron Collider) found a boson. It may even be the Higgs boson, so they may have proved the theory of how things in our universe were bestowed with mass. But they didn’t find any kind of boson that bestows the kind of craziness on cable network executives that makes them cancel their network’s highest-rated scripted drama with adults 18-49 just because some people don’t like the show.

I’ve written this before, and I’ll do it again with bolding and underlining:  at its current ratings levels, Falling Skies is an absolute lock for renewal. It’s TNT’s highest-rated scripted drama with adults 18-49.  Note: for purposes of advertising sales, TNT actually focuses more on adults 25-54. It's TNT's #2 scripted show in that demo, so any way you look at it, it's safe at the current levels.

Anything’s possible. Anything, that is, except TNT cancelling its highest-rated scripted drama with adults 18-49. With good reason I don’t usually predict renewals for cable shows, but the ratings would have to drop more than 20% from where they are now for me to even think of it as a bubble show.

Earlier I’d thought that Falling Skies was solely a Dreamworks production and that TNT was just a distributor. But our friends at TNT inform me I thought wrong and that it is a co-production with TNT. I’m not sure of the specifics of the deal, but what that means is that TNT gets a piece of international licensing, DVDs and any syndication.

I don’t have a problem with anyone hating the show. But if you think it ought to be canceled just because you don’t like it, that’s wacky and you’re going to be disappointed when it’s renewed.  If you’re a fan of the show, there’s no need for you to worry about it being canceled yet.

BTW, your title. Seriously? You can do better than that. :-D

Haters should just be happy there’s a scripted show on cable rating highly instead of another reality show.

    @ Robert Seidman:

Q: i heard a rumour that the Cancellation Bear was being cancelled and replaced with a new animal for the 2012-13 season, can you comment on the bears status please?

Q: how much is that bear pulling down per annum, roughly?

    :)

Haters should just be happy there’s a scripted show on cable rating highly instead of another reality show.

I agree with that, but at the same time I think the reason reality shows are doing so well is perhaps because the scripted programming is falling short somehow. Just a theory.

I’m not an FS “hater.” It’s an okay alien-invasion show, and I’m glad they finally left the stupid school and are moving into bigger territory and plot potential. I just liked “V” better and feel the Spielberg pedigree of FS has been a disappointment. Pairing a reVived “V” with FS for a night of Alien Summer Sundays would still be a dream come true, but I guess the former would be too expensive and TNT fears diluting the night with too many aliens. I still think it would benefit both shows, but whatever. Renew “Falling Skies.” It’s better than no alien-invasion show ;)

Oh, and the fact that the “Battlestar Galactica” writers and producers are now helming “Falling Skies” makes me root much more for FS now than I did before. It also maks me eager to see what they do with it, since I still feel that the re-imagined “Battlestar Galactica” was the most brilliant television series ever put on the airwaves, and with the single most amazing series finale EVER !!!!!!!

Patrick, give it a rest with the V stuff already lol. It’s dead and gone. I think you are one of maybe 5 people in this country that just loved that green screened POS lol. As for FS, I don’t know why anyone would waste their time hating on a show that is on for all of 8 weeks in the summer. Like TNT would be producing some groundbreaking ratings blockbuster in the summer that could otherwise occupy those 10 hours. It’s a good summer show and the story is better than what a lot of networks attempt to pass off as scifi.

@Patrick G- I would have been excited to see BSG:Blood and Chrome come to life but it seems that Syfy is not coming out with much scripted series this year and more ghost/haunting reality shows.

Falling Skies has made an improvement this year over last IMO. I think if it started out like this last year, maybe there would be less criticism. I think it still lacks that war type grittiness and atmosphere of Speilberg’s past WW2 miniseries, other past scifi series like BSG and Space:A&B, as well as similar movies Aliens, Terminator, or even Battle LA. FS has made steps in the right direction even though it still feels like a family friendly version of a post apocalyptic alien invasion type show. It has the campy feeling of an Independence Day with less coolness and the annoying family drama of War of the Worlds. The good thing this season is that they are still able to have the human conflict with each other but things are not so cozy as the aliens are right on their heels pursuing them and not just in the background.

I’m not a hater or a lover, I’m just waiting for the ratings to stabilize this season, I’m a little surprised they don’t appear to have done so yet. I still think if it drops to 1.0 (and definitely if it goes below that) and stays then it’s in danger territory regardless of the other performers on TNT. Yes, I know that’s not conventional wisdom but cable is funny and as has been pointed out often in the past, other factors than ratings can decide whether a show stays or goes.

Now, that being said, I don’t think they’ll just cancel the show cold (for one thing it has Spielberg attached to it if only peripherally although paradoxically that may also be the reason not to keep it around even if it steadies out at .9 because that would be a kind of ‘failure’ for a show like this with the people attached to it) and TNT will give the writers time to do a nice wrap up along with a press release.

Fox cancelled it’s highest rated Terra Nova, so don’t be surprised if TNT will do the same. Do you know exactly Falling Skies’s budget or how much it earns overseas? I don’t know too. Terra Nova was broadcasted on biggest channels around the world, but where is it now?..

  • Simon

When I read this title, I almost thought that it HAD been renewed lol! In any event, FS will not be getting cancelled anytime soon methinks.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

@scifi: Terra Nova was nowhere near Fox’s highest-rated scripted show.

I really hope we get a season 3! I enjoy the show and do a fan podcast for it. This will potentially be the first show we’ve done that had a season 2 and a season 3! I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

    Scifi
Channel’s such as Tnt don’t need massive ratings for a show to work they can make i

Robert Seidman gets a partial win regarding ‘Falling Skies’, finally! ;) …Congrats! :)

…We were told by Robert that ‘Falling Skies’ numbers were down due to sports in first episodes, when ratings were 1,5; problem was that the next week, when no sports aired, it got a 1.3 rating (instead of a rating boost). Last week 1.2 rating… That theory did not hold up!

Far too many people thought/think that these are bad ratings, which they would be on any other network… However on TNT, and even at NBC; these ratings still justify a renewal.

And this is a Sci-Fi show, they generally do not get a large and broad following.

But will ‘skies’ (pun intended) will continue to fall on ‘Falling Skies’, will we see a 1.1, 1.0, 0.9 or even a 0.8 episode rating before season finale?

  • lando

    @FlabbyKneeCapsOfDeath
I completely agree, something is off this season! I also think is the children…i enjoyed the 1st season but the characters are getting annoying and they are focusing TOO much on the children.

  • Davis

    @Jayme

I think you will see your season 3 of ‘Falling Skies’, it does not air on CBS (that only chase ratings, at expense of “good” substance): It’s on TNT …and for them these are quite good numbers. As Robert said, they are the highest rated show on TNT.

It has fallen, and lost about half it’s ratings since season 1 opening, and has seen a new low this season… The only question I’ve had since Roberts rant about how the NBA-game ate all it’s viewers in season 2 opening (which turned out to be false); is HOW low TNT can afford to let it slip before it starts to hurt.

But if they have a partner, as Robert has been told, the show could maybe take quite a hit; ratings-wise. Maybe even a 0.6 even before TNT starts to sweat…

So I think it is a safe bet, you will be able to see a season 3, and perhaps even a 4th :)

“networks don’t cancel top ratings performers.”

They do in Canada. Combat Hospital was a huge hit here. So far Bell Media hasn’t commissioned a 3rd season of The Borgias and if they don’t it won’t matter much what Showtime has said unless Showtime is prepared to pay a lot more $$ to keep it going. Rogers Media cancelled Murdoch Mysteries even though it had its largest audience ever and was by far their top-performing domestic show. Could it be that CTV’s current top original series gets the axe; Saving Hope is doing great here but on NBC not so much. CBC was a co-production company for s1 of Doctor Who and they tried cancelling the show but BBC went on with out CBC and had the best (David Tennant) series of the show.

Has itv renewed Law & Order | UK for a 4th season (7th & 8th series) yet? They were about due to some 8 months ago but have not yet done so.

Maybe not so often in the US but elsewhere networks do bail on their top performers. And if it can happen elsewhere then the US tv industry isn’t immune.

  • Tested

Falling Skies is a solid show and they’re building in some good plot devices that bode well for the rest of the season and beyond. TNT is having a great summer with this and the Dallas reboot.

    This show STINKS !!!
