Update: here's the official renewal announcement.

The announcement that Falling Skies has been renewed for a third season should come out within the next day or two according to Variety's Stuart Levine.  As noted over (and over) again the show's renewal has never been in doubt since it's TNT's top scripted drama with adults 18-49.  Despite my hopes that TNT would stretch out the renewal as long as possible (there is surprising traffic both from fans as well as haters predicting the show will be canceled because they don't like it) my guess is the announcement will come on Tuesday (7/10).  Last summer the season two renewal announcement came on Monday, July 7, 2011.

No info on the episode order in the Variety piece, but I'd look for another 10 episode season.

@ cimmer “I can’t imagine that even if FS didn’t get a renewal that TNT would have just ended it cold, they would have wrapped it up somehow.

Then you lack imagination. If the ratings had tanked this I 100% guarantee that regardless the cliffhanger season ender … that would have been all she wrote. Your best bet to find out what happened next is the writers give a brief outline at a ComicCon or someone puts out a “Season 3″ comic.

@ Psac “… incredibly better this year in quality …

I agree. For me there are still few minor annoyances but overall a much better product this season so far. And not just the writing, all aspects have shown a marked improvement. The problem with shows that have completed filming before the first episode airs is you can’t have any mid-course corrections in season … you have to hope for renewal and fix any problems between seasons.

It better be coming soon, because I would love to stick it in the haters’ faces for trying to campaign against this show for no real reason. ;)

  • The End

Season 2 was filmed and finished months ago, and doesn’t having a series ending end if it wasn’t renewed.

  • Petey

The End, can you please stop posting spoilers on here? Seriously it’s not even funny. It’s just ignorant!

  • Davis

    …How in h*ll was that a “spoiler” :)

  • USAmerica1st

That’s no spoiler. But if the producers are smart, they’ll do what J. Michael Straczynsk did with Babylon5: have the final episode already in the can long before TNT decided the show’s fate.

  • tv#1

It’s not the best show, but overall I like it. It is a lot more enjoyable than many other shows on TV. I would be more than happy to have it back next summer.

  • The End

That is in no way a spoiler, as everyone else here has said. I can’t help it if I’m in a position to know how it ends and what happens.

If you had noticed, I’m answering someones post.

I have a right to be concerned that, from what I know and understand if this show was cancelled it’d be a very bad thing.

  • Polar Bear

hopefully TNT tells them before they start filming one day whether it’ll be the last season.

  • Petey

It’s not just here. he’s posted spoilers before. No need to get so defensive!

  • The Original J

If they give R&I 15-episode seasons, why don’t they give this show that many per season? If they don’t want the ratings to fall between seasons again, they should give it more episodes in S3 so that people don’t have to wait as long between summers to watch it.

  • The End

No I haven’t. Get off your high horse already, I posted a vague comment once to someone and Robert told me off for doing so and ever since I haven’t posted a single thing here that could be classed as spoilerific and I challenge you to provide proof of your statements before getting all bent out of shape at me.

And for the record I posted one thing about someone who is appearing in the show and when he appears, and nothing more.

    Quit post stalking me buddy.

  • Crazy Eye Broyles (AJ)

Good news. Now they just need to do more than 10 eps at a time. This season starts and finishes with double episodes so you only get FS 8 weeks out of the year. I would like for them to bump it up to 13.

  • Walt

AJ, Amen! I hope they order 12 or 13.

  • Robert Seidman

@Patrick: I had to restore from a backup database so ~an hour’s worth of comments (from ~8:30-9:30p ET) were nuked. Apologies.

I have to say I think the 2nd season of Falling Skies has been really lame. I am really sick of all the hugging and loving between people. No one seems scared at all and it just seems like it’s lost it’s way and is constantly grasping at straws.
Even the fansite at seems to struggle to keep a positive attitude towards the show…

  • JJMorgan19

I’m happy for Falling Skies, for the cast and crew, for the fans, but I don’t think this is as deep and interesting as it could be. I hope we’re going somewhere because I can’t take this show much longer. Honestly, I decided to check out after season one’s finale, and then I heard Terry O’Quinn would be in this season’s finale, so I decided to stick around. “Compass” is one of the worst written episodes I’ve ever watched. If I hear the name Jimmy one more time, haha, but at least they’ve quit the “Before the Attack” crap.

  • Irene

Falling skies is better this year. It was losing me but this year it was awesome.

TNT should order 15 episodes instead of 10, which is too little for a good rated cable series.
