Intergalactic Sci-Fi Series is First From Overall Network Deal with DeKnight

Straczynski and Lee Team Up With Tapert for a New Twist On The 15th Century
Vlad Dracula Tale

Beverly Hills, Calif., July 11, 2012 - Starz announced today two new original series projects in development.

As part of STARZ overall deal with “Spartacus” creator Steven S. DeKnight, STARZ is developing “Incursion,” an epic science fiction action-thriller that follows a squad of soldiers caught in a war against a hostile alien race. Each season the battle will be fought on a new, exotic planet as humanity punches deeper into enemy territory. Grittily realistic combat, darkly complex characters and intrigue on a cosmic scale will permeate the tale of fighting men and women facing the pressures of war and an enemy unlike any ever seen. In addition to his international acclaim on “Spartacus,” Steven has worked on such well-regarded series as “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”, “Angel”, “Smallville,” and “Dollhouse.

J. Michael Straczynski is the wildly successful writer and producer whose credits include such fan classics as Thor, Underworld: Awakening, “Babylon 5,” and The Changeling. He has teamed with horror master Roy Lee, whose credits include such hits as The Ring, The Strangers and The Woman in Black in developing "Vlad Dracula" with veteran producer Rob Tapert, whose credits include the international Starz hit series, “Spartacus,” iconic “Xena: Warrior Princess,” Evil Dead and The Grudge. The project is a unique spin of the classic tale, blending the historical facts of the 15th century Prince of Wallachia, with the fictional Dracula whose story is known around the world and continues to fascinate audiences. “Vlad Dracula” traces his evolution from a revered ruler to the world's most feared vampire, and his slow downfall as he struggles desperately to hang on to his humanity, his wife and his kingdom.

Managing Director of Starz, Carmi Zlotnik said “Steven DeKnight, J. Michael Straczynski, Roy Lee and Rob Tapert are legendary talents, having created some of the most groundbreaking and iconic television series with incredibly passionate fan bases the world over. We are thrilled to work with such sophisticated auteurs and producers as we grow the slate of unique Starz original series.”

    Oh great, Starzship Troopers.

  • The End

Explains why Spartacus was canned I guess. Producers want to do that show.

  • Observer

    Sounds good!

  • Kromoz

Great to see JMS back on our screens. Like Sorkin, Abrams, Spielberg, Hewitt Wolfe, Behr or Whedon, I’ll always pop in to see what he is offering.

  • wha

Good news, if not the dumb PR talk of calling freaking Xena iconic whereas Buffy is just “well-regarded”. Stupid bitches.

  • Mitholas

I think these shows are a result of Spartacus being canceled and Starz not wanting to let these guys go. They did well on Spartacus and I’ll definitely be interested in these shows.

More Vlad Dracula though. Sounds right up my alley. Hopefully Lucy Lawless will be in it. She does have a tendency to work with her husband, after all.

Hope they trade some of the Strong Sexual Content for violence and don’t make sex scenes like a late night skin-e-max flick. I’m all for nudity and an occasional banging but Spartacus took that too far.

  • cimmer

Hmmm, they both look like they might be interesting. I’m bored with vampires though but JMS is involved so….

Incursion sounds a bit like Space: Above and Beyond. I liked that show. Maybe the humans will be the ‘bad guys’ in Incursion like we found out they were in Space: Above and Beyond (that was a nice twist right before it was canceled lol).

  • Teaghan

    Incursion! Sounds so good.

No thanks. I’m not watching anything on Starz ever again. They’re just gonna cancel it after 2 or 3 years no matter how good it is. They cancelled Spartacus after 3 seasons and were praising it as a worldwide hit show with millions and millions of fans all over the world. This looks like what happened at HBO with David Milch and his shows Deadwood and John From Cincinatti. I guess the next thing that’s going to happen is the last season of Spartacus won’t get made because of some made-up reason & these 2 new shows will get cancelled after their first seasons. If by some miracle these shows last awhile and they get a good finale then I’ll catch up on dvd. But I’m betting Starz will cancel them both after 1 or 2 seasons. I don’t trust them anymore.

  • scifi

They will not pick up these projects. Just PR for subscribers.
