@MBMOM yes i disliked Starr on GH she seemed so bitter and whiny at the start. Now I am really enjoying her. I really think that pairing if allowed to be happy for the summer will help bring up that 18-49 demographic. nice to see Michael smiling for a change as well

Mom, I can see suspending belief too and I have. I am either just over it or just not into it anymore.”

You are obviously not over it since you post and complain about the show every day!

  • MBmomof3

Richard, I hear what you are saying about the quality of the cable scripted dramas being so much better than the daytime network soaps. I am a fan myself. But again, I think a lot of that goes to the fact that the cable shows run short seasons, are aired once a week at most, have more time to prepare, write, rehearse, produce, etc.

Producing a 1 hour show 5x week, 52 weeks/year with limited budgets, 40 pages of script, no rehearsal and getting it all in one take is an incredible feat! Some might think its “sloppy” writing, producing, or acting. I think it’s amazing!

  • Richard

David, Obviously you only look here. People have complained about the music people on several sites. I think for one in the GH Alternative thread over at SON several complained about it and not liking the new music. Don’t even try to throw up I am the only one. All you have to do is look around.

You say you have posted stuff that proved I was wrong when you discuss the show. No all you do is post your opinion. And that does not make mine wrong. But of course you are so full of yourself that you would think that your opinion automatically makes mine wrong.

I post my opinion and that is all it is. I post stuff I see on other sites that also supports my opinion. But even that does not make my opinion right and yours wrong. It is what it is — an opinion. Just like yours.

But I can admit that whereas you can’t. You obviously cannot handle that there might be something that someone doesn’t like about your precious show. Well get over. There are people that don’t like it. And yes they are going to continue to post on this site and on other sites what they don’t like.

I don’t care if you make 1000 posts daily praising GH. That is fine. Do it. I don’t mind hearing what people like about the show.

My problem comes in when you try to tell me and others what we should post about and what we shouldn’t. And only for one reason. You can’t handle it and can’t deal with it. Get over it. Grow up. Not everyone in this world is going to like what you like. Obviously over the last month over 120,000 women in the 18-49 age range decided they didn’t like it either and tuned out.

Are you going to start chasing them around the world and demand they like GH? Are you going to start going to every message board and tell them what they can post about and what they can’t? Or tell the magazines they can’t print anything negative about GH because you like it?

If you will just let people post what they want and quit complaining about it maybe more of us could get along. The rest of us seem to understand that adult notion. You are the only one who constantly complains about what people post.

  • Richard

Mom, I know that today’s GH obviously has more to do with budget to some degree. And that limits some of the stuff they are able to do. But I don’t get so much into the argument about putting on a show 5x a week etc since for years they did that. And even back in the late 70s and early 80s they put on a more believeable and better show with even a smaller staff. I have seen the number of writers listed at times from then and there were a whole lot less writers on staff then, but now they pay more writers to write the show. Maybe it is thing of too many cooks spoil the soup. But from what I read the writer’s guild requires that many writers now but didn’t back then.

As I said budget goes into a lot, but just comparing the quality and stuff from about 10 years ago to now, you see a big big difference. And they were doing the 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year thing then too.

But even comparing those cable shows, none of them have as big of budgets as primetime networks shows do and esp. in the drama category, the drama series on cable far exceed the quality of drama series on the networks now. And the network shows have better budgets and stuff.

I think the biggest thing I see in daytime is that they just keep recycling the same old writers and producers now. One show goes off the air and the other shows fire their writers and take the ones that just saw their shows cancelled. Or they fire them and then bring them back like Days is doing now.

There are so many factors that go into it. And budget is a big part of it. I guess like I said I have always been willing esp. the last few years with Guza at the head to suspend belief. And maybe it is just being older, I just refuse to suspend total belief anymore. I just expect more out of my time.

And I think the biggest thing with GH right now, it just seems a whole lot more campy to me from what I see lately. And I have never really been a big fan of campy type stuff. A little bit is okay, but a lot turns me off.

  • Michele

    @MB
You’re right about the quick writing turnaround that Soap writers have. I remember when Karen Harris (I think that is her last name) left GH in 2010 she said budget cuts had forced shows to speed up production so storylines have to be written quickly. She said back in the 90′s writers were given a longer time to write and review before there work went into production. Now she said they were only given a few days.

  • David

No Richard numerous times you have insulted people for their liking GH or liking something positive calling them fan boys etc so dont make me out to be the only bad guy on this. You have pulled this attitude with anyone who calls you out on things.

  • David

@Michele and MBMOM it is so true budget cuts have forced changes in the shows. Remember in the 80′s when the shows would do huge location shots sometimes 2 or 3 times per year.

The problem is people wanting the shows to be as they were in the 80s. It just cannot happen. For one thing you have far more women working now so of course the ratings will not be the same.

I won’t even get into how flawed the ratings system is. That would just cause a discussion that would be a waste of time because for years people have been saying that needs to change and it has not and don’t see that happening anytime soon!

  • Richard

Mom, One more thought. I guess it goes back to what I was saying maybe a month ago when I said that I can’t see why someone at the networks doesn’t quit looking at excuses like there being so much competition or that Nielsen is counting the viewers right, or trying to get them to make the over 50 count more, etc. But start asking the question, why in the face of competition are people choosing to watch HGTV, Fox News, or reruns on TNT instead of what we are airing esp. the soaps.

I mean when someone would rather watch an episode of Law & Order or Supernatural on TNT that has been aired maybe 30 times before over a brand new episode of their soap — then you have to start asking why. Or mothers and grandmothers that are at home, just give up their TV to their young children to watch Disney all day. I use Disney since it has been the number 1 cable network in daytime quite a big this summer according to press releases on this site.

I guess it will come down to viewers just choosing to totally suspend all belief and just accept whatever the shows throw at them just for the sake of having them. I guess for some of us we are just unwilling to do that. I just can’t watch whatever they put on just for the sake of keeping it.

But then I can’t get over the 30 years I have devotedly watched the show just to walk away either. There is still a part of me that wants to watch and wants to like it but I can’t. This is the first time I have ever done this with a TV show. I have quit watching probably 100s of primetime TV shows through the years and just walked away.

  • Richard

David, Funny thing is that most all of those people you refer too turned out to be fake posters that were all Chris B. Every time that the moderators came on they would list all the names. Those are the same people I called out. So I still count that as calling out ONE person because they were all one and the same but pretending to be more.

Funny that is not one thing I have ever had to do around here was to create fake names and post as them to get someone to agree with me.

And on if fan boy hurts then those of you that want that term to stop being throwed out there then you need to stop throwing out the hater term.

According to the new Internet vernacular, if you don’t spill out obvious continuous positive love for a show then you are a hater. If you can’t take anyone saying something negative about your show, then you become a fan boy or fan girl.

The key is if you don’t want to be called a NAME then don’t start the name calling.

  • Richard

    Michele,

I remember reading that too. Which is another of those things I don’t understand. Why with more writers than they had back then do they have less time to write and deal with things.

I remember a few years back someone posted credits for old TV shows. A few soaps were included. There was an episode of GH from about 1976 or 1977 when the show had just gone to an hour and there was like 3 writers listed for the show. And of the other soaps most were after the hour format came into play and none of them had over 5 writers listed.

Its weird. It makes you wonder if they could do it then why can’t they do that now. It would sure help the budget.

  • Bizzarr

Im with u guys im a guy and lov GH has been great i like the dark show

  • Richard

    Bizz,

I think that is the biggest difference with Guza and Ron C.

Guza attracted the female 18-49 viewers for some reason. He kept that demo high and in essence is what saved GH last year because that demo was the best on ABC.

But now those viewers are being turned away while the over 50 and males are going up. GH was always dead last in male viewers for much of Guza’s run. Now they are rising — still last but coming up each week.

    Its weird.

  • dg

Cartini is tanking GH. The lame DID story. Heather Webber is a cartoon obsessed with Luke, that’s not a story! The younger generation is boring as hell. And finally the One Life to Live infusion just takes away from GH’s history. I fully expect ABC to give GH the ax next April and replace it with Good Afternoon America.

  • Richard

The latest ratings should be posted on here before too long. SON has them up now.

GH had a better week, gained in 18-49 and total viewers but lost in male viewers. The gains and losses were not substantial.

Days set a new low in 18-49 female viewers.
