WEEK No. 43:

During the week of July 9, 2012, ABC claimed 3 of the Top 20 most-watched TV shows:  “The Bachelorette” – No. 5, “Wipeout-THURS” – No. 17 and “Secret Millionaire” – No. 19. For the 2nd week in a row, ABC aired the No. 1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, delivering the week’s Top 3 newsmagazines on both measures with “20/20-FRI,” “20/20-FRIDAY” and the debut of “NY Med.” Building week to week by double-digit margins in Total Viewers (+13% - 4.5 million vs. 4.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+18% - 1.3/4 vs. 1.1/4), ABC earned its best numbers in 3 weeks – since w/o 6/18/12.

 

Monday

With its lineup of “The Bachelorette” and “The Glass House,” ABC (6.5 million) outdrew Fox with its unscripted originals by 8% (6.0 million – “Hell’s Kitchen”/”MasterChef”).  In Adults 18-49 (2.0/6), ABC led NBC (1.1/3 – including originals of “Fear Factor” and “American Ninja Warrior”) by 82%.  For the 5th time in 6 weeks, ABC took first place on the Monday with all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

 

  • ABC marked its 2nd-most-watched Monday this summer and hit its highest summer numbers since early last August with key Women (W18-34/W18-49) – since 8/8/11.

 

“The Bachelorette” (8:00-10:04 p.m.)

Beating Fox’s unscripted lineup (“Hell’s Kitchen”/”MasterChef”) from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Bachelorette” won its time slot to qualify as Monday’s No. 1 TV show in Total Viewers (8.1 million) and top series in Adults 18-49 (2.5/7).  Additionally, for the 8th week running, the ABC unscripted series won its slot across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54), while qualifying as Monday’s No. 1 TV show for the 5th straight week on all three measures.

 

  • The Bachelorette” hit a season-high in Total Viewers, while generating its strongest young adult performance since its season opener 8 weeks ago - since 5/14/12.

 

  • Ranking as the No. 7 TV show overall for the week in Adults 18-49, ABC’s “The Bachelorette” finished among the Top 10 for the 4th week in a row. In fact, “The Bachelorette” registered as the No. 1 program overall across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) for the 2nd week in a row.

 

“The Glass House” (10:04-11:00 p.m.)

During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “The Glass House” finished No. 2 against its network rivals with Total Viewers (2.8 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.0/3), while ranking No. 1 with Adults 18-34 and among key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49).

 

Tuesday

Wipeout-TUES” (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

A special Tuesday episode of ABC’s “Wipeout” drew the Net’s largest audience in the 8 o’clock hour this summer in Total Viewers (4.7 million), while also matching ABC’s strongest performance with Adults 18-49 (1.5/5).

 

  • “Wipeout” made ABC the No. 1 broadcaster in the 8:00 p.m. hour with Kids 2-11 (1.6/5-tie). In fact, the broad-appealing series turned in ABC’s best Kids performance in the time slot in 9 months – since 10/11/11.

 

“NY Med” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Building on its lead-in by 2.5 million viewers, the debut of ABC’s “NY Med” shot up to rank as the No. 1 series in its 10 o’clock time period with Total Viewers (5.5 million). The new ABC series outdrew CBS’ “48 Hours Mystery” by 10% (5.0 million) and NBC’s “Love in the Wild” by 31% (4.2 million). In addition, “NY Med” (1.7/4) beat its CBS (1.5/4) and NBC (1.5/4) competition with the key news demo by 13% each in the hour.

 

  • “NY Med” greatly improved over original series programming in the time slot on the year-ago night (“Combat Hospital” on 7/12/11) by 49% in Total Viewers, 42% in Adults 25-54 and 50% in Adults 18-49.

 

Thursday

ABC ranked No. 2 on Thursday night to aBig Brother”-fueled CBS in Total Viewers (5.1 million), while beating NBC by 75% (0.8/2) and Fox by 17% (1.2/4) among Adults 18-49 (1.4/4).

 

  • ABC was up over the prior week by 8% among young adults, matching its top-rated non-sports performance on the night since the end of May – since 5/31/12.

 

“Duets” (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

In the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Duets” was the 2nd-most-watched show, outdrawing its unscripted competition on Fox (“Take Me Out”) by 1.7 million viewers (4.7 million vs. 3.0 million).

 

“Wipeout” (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

ABC’s “Wipeout” earned second place to CBS’ season premiere of “Big Brother 14” from 9:00-10:00 p.m., dominating the season finale of Fox’s “The Choice” by 2.7 million viewers (5.7 million vs. 3.0 million) and 50% in Adults 18-49 (1.8/6 vs. 1.2/4). “Wipeout” also nearly quadrupled (+260%) the young adult delivery of NBC’s “Saving Hope” (0.5/2). For the 3rd week in a row, the broad-appealing ABC unscripted series stood as Thursday’s No. 1 broadcast program with Kids 2-11.

 

  • Despite the increased competition from the “Big Brother” premiere, ABC’s “Wipeout” built its overall Viewer count from the prior week’s telecast (+2%) and held 100% of its Adult 18-49 audience. In addition, “Wipeout” grew by double-digit margins in Men 18-34 (+33%) and Kids 2-11 (+16%) to hit a best-since-premiere number and a season-high, respectively.

 

Rookie Blue” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Rookie Blue” finished as the No. 1 program among Women 18-49 (1.7/5) and Women 25-54 (2.0/5) on the major networks.

 

  • The ABC drama grew for the 2nd straight telecast in Women 18-49 (+6%) and Women 25-54 (+5%), marking its highest numbers in 3 weeks – since 6/7/12.

 

Friday

ABC qualified as the most-watched television network on Friday night for the 2nd consecutive week (4.9 million), while topping NBC by 20% (1.0/4), CBS by 71% (0.7/3) and Fox by 100% (0.6/2) in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5).

 

  • ABC claimed Friday’s No. 1 TV program in Total Viewers for the 2nd week running.

 

Shark Tank” (8:00-9:01 p.m.)

At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s rebroadcast “Shark Tank” was the most-watched show (4.8 million), leading runner-up CBS’ replay “Undercover Boss” by 9% (4.4 million). The repeat ABC series defeated its rivals in Adults 18-49 for the 2nd straight week.

 

  • Growing over the prior week’s encore by 21% in Total Viewers and by 8% in Adults 18-49, “Shark Tank” marked summer-highs.

 

“20/20-FRIDAY” (9:01-10:00 p.m.)

ABC’s “20/20-FRIDAY” won the 9 o’clock hour and qualified as Friday’s most-watched TV program overall (5.0 million). Head to head in the time slot, ABC’s “20/20-FRIDAY” outperformed the first hour of NBC’s “Dateline” by 1.6 million viewers (5.0 million vs. 3.4 million), by 30% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/5 vs. 1.0/3) and by 33% in Adults 25-54 (1.6/5 vs. 1.2/4).

 

  • “20/20-FRIDAY” delivered ABC’s strongest performance in the hour with regular programming this summer in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 (tie).

 

“20/20” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

At 10 o’clock, ABC’s “20/20” turned in its best performance in over a month in Adults 25-54 (1.7/5) and Adults 18-49 (1.3/4) – since 6/8/12. In addition, the ABC newsmagazine was up over its year-ago telecast by 7% in Total Viewers, by 6% in Adults 25-54 and 8% in Adults 18-49.

 

Sunday

ABC ranked No. 1 on Sunday night among Adults 18-49 for the 2nd week running (1.4/4-tie), beating CBS (with the Sunday premiere of “Big Brother 14”) by 27% (1.1/3) and NBC (with a 2-hour “Dateline”) by 56% (0.9/3). ABC also won the night with Adults 25-54 and among key Women demographics (W18-49/W25-54).

 

  • For the 2nd week in a row, ABC matched its strongest Sunday this summer with regular programming.

 

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” (7:00-8:00 p.m.)

ABC’s replayAmerica’s Funniest Home Videos finished No. 1 in the 7 o’clock hour in Adults 18-49 (1.2/4), beating NBC’s original “Dateline” by 71% (0.7/3). The broad-appealing ABC series also won its time period across all key Women demographics and stood as the top-rated broadcast program with Kids 2-11.

 

  • Launching over the prior week’s repeat by 16% in Total Viewers (5.2 million vs. 4.5 million) and 20% with Adults 18-49 (1.2/4 vs. 1.0/4), ABC’s “AFHV” delivered its best performance this summer to date. In addition, the veteran ABC video-clip show was upover its year-ago telecast by 4% and 9% with viewers and young adults, respectively (5.0 million and 1.1/4 on 7/17/11).

 

Secret Millionaire” (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

Building sharply on its lead-in (+25%), ABC’s “Secret Millionaire” matched the prior week’s season-high in Adults 18-49 (1.5/5).

 

“EM: Weight Loss Edition” (9:00-11:00 p.m.)

From 9:00-11:00 p.m., ABC’s “EM: Weight Loss Edition” continued to grow during each half-hour of its broadcast, soaring by 1.1 million viewers (3.7 million to 4.8 million) and 33% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/3 to 1.6/5) from start to finish. In fact, the ABC unscripted series shot up to rank No. 1 during its second hour from 10:00-11:00 p.m. with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
