  • Olympic Break

The best time to get back into any soaps will be starting this week as we’ve got the huge DAYSASTER starting next week with that Olympic hiatus. I’m pretty sure that cliffhanger on Friday might be one of the biggest in DAYS history.

Y&R and B&B is getting intense also as you’ve got all types of drama on Y&R with threats everywhere it seems. Little Hope isn’t so innocent anymore as she goes in anger.

GH has already been intense but Luke is trying to get out of the fire and Robin is back temporarily.

I would suggest catching these clips on YouTube as their up all over the place.

@Diana and Darcy, I too am upset about how some of the couples on GH are being written right now. I understand some people could care less about the romance, but some of us love it. That has always been a favorite part of my 30 year history with soap viewing, the love stories, I mean the true ones. It is nice to have a sweet loving, and genuine romance as opposed to meaningless hookups and contrived unions. Well we still have the Jasam mess by putting John in the middle of everything and where is Natalie? Don’t write them as getting back together on OLTL at the ending, only to bring him on GH without her and I read somewhere he kissed Sam? Geez, I can understand why many of John-Natalie fans are upset about that; also, they keep putting Liz into Jason’s orbit and they still have a very strong fanbase after all these years; Kate and Sonny, I really don’t care anymore about them to be honest; Steve and Olivia, well don’t know what to say since Heather is all up in their business and Steve stupidly seems to defend his mom knowing she is a total nutcase; Michael and Starr are kinda cute, I guess; Maxie and Spinelli, too much back and forth, so it doesn’t matter to me anymore; poor Patrick is seeing visions of Robin because he is hallucinating while taking pills, I just hope Robin comes back for real before the show ends and they can be reuinted; the triangle between Luke/Anna and Tracy, I don’t know what to think, but I don’t care for the fact that Anna is fawning all over him and ignoring her son in law and granddaughter in the process, but I much prefer them to be good friends because in the past, I liked Luke and Tracy together, they were a riot; Todd and Blair, well this is about the hundreth time they have gotten back together, so another I don’t care; Carly and Johnny, sorry but can anyone think they have a true romance? Not me, just feels contrived and convenient for both of them at the moment, and last but not least, my faves, Dante and Lulu, but they are writing them so out of character with Lulu running a nightclub with her ex Johnny who has become so vile, I hate how RC has ruined his character and writing Dante like the jealous insecure husband, when he is much stronger than that. It sucks! I read somewhere that Cartini doesn’t like happy couples because they feel they are boring, but please, I don’t buy that. At the end of OLTL, many of those couples had happy endings, well some we thought, but apparently they don’t care much about the GH couples because they have no history with them. You can still write a happy couple going through problems but working through them together instead of breaking them up over the least little things. According to what I have read on some other messageboards, I do believe that RC has angered and alienated alot of these couples with strong fanbases, such as Jason and Liz, John and Natalie, Dante and Lulu and Jason and Sam with all this bad OOC writing he is doing for them. Back in the day on soaps the true romances always survived the tough times and those couples always found their way back to each other. Unfortunately, Cartini’s version of “romance” on GH is pretty much dead right now IMO.

  • Mark

I honestly think this might be it for the soap cancellations for a while. I don’t see the remaining four going anywhere for a while.

It’s real funny how all of the soap replacements except Let’s Make a Deal are rating well below the last place soap.

  • Mark

    @ Melanie

The romance is not completely dead its growing with the young stars on GH like Starr & Michael and TJ & Molly.

  • Melanie

    @Mark,
I really wouldn’t call TJ and Molly a “real romance” because they are still so young, like 15? No way, more of experimenting. Like, I said earlier I think Michael and Starr are alright. I guess it depends too on what couples you like and want to see the most of. Everyone has a personal preference. Just wish more of it came to light to balance out all the constant drama and I don’t need to see love scenes all of the time, but I like to see the playful loving banter between the couples. Sounds cheesy, I know, but I think it is so cute! I used to see it alot between Patrick and Robin, Dante and Lulu and Jason and Sam when they first got together. That is what I think made their relationships so strong and seem so much more genuine.

I wanted to add that Y&R, I personally think does a much better job in the romance department and there are so many couples on there that I do like: Nick and Phyllis, I know she is in deep, deep trouble but am glad Nick told her Friday he would move back in with her and support her; Kevin and Chloe, I think are fun; Jack and Nikki have always had a great relationship, but she is still truly in love with Victor; Michael and Lauren; Cane and Lily; Billy and Victoria; hey I even kinda like Adam and Chelsea, lol and thought they had a really nice wedding at his mother’s farm; and I think Abby and Carmine would be a cute couple. The only dud couple on that soap for me would be Victor and Sharon, yikes! When I view this soap, although these couples have their share of problems, I see alot of the playful loving banter between them. It is nice to have some romance, lightness and fun, in between all the constant drama.

  • Darcy

@Melanie I also agree with you I feel like the real romance on GH is dead. I couldn’t stand Jason and Liz together the first time and I won’t be watching them together again. I have always liked Jason and Sam together. I also feel the same way you do about the John and Natalie story. If the writers wanted to bring John to GH then they should have also brought Natalie. I hated how the writers put them back together at the very end of OLTL to seperate them now on GH.

@Mark I don’t think you can call TJ and Molly a romance they are 14 year old kids. I can’t stand Starr so I don’t care who they put her with she was horrible on OLTL and she is horrible on GH.

I haven’t watch GH since the end of May so I’m not really sure who is with who right now.

  • Richard

Just my opinion but I think some of you are being very very naive if you think that the networks are going to continue shelling out millions of dollars for shows that continue to drop or set lows.

Or if you think that it is better to keep these shows than to alienate viewers.

I remind you again that many shows are cancelled each year that have just as many or even more viewers than these shows do. #1 example is NBC who cancelled one of their most watched programs this last season in Harry’s Law which had a guaranteed built in audience of 5 to 7 million each week.

Daytime is treated a little different than primetime, but even Anne Sweeney at ABC last year said they were trying to give themselves options at scheduling time just like they have in primetime.

And as to the Days scheduling sorry if I was wrong, but that is just what I had read in a couple of interviews that they were filming up to 6 months in advance so that is what I was basing my information on. I will see if I can find it but it said they were filming 2 episodes a day now. The article even mentioned they had very little time to rehearse scenes if any.

@ Dave A — thanks for the correction on Let’s Make A Deal. It has been awhile since I have seen their ratings.

  • Richard

I love even when actors know a storyline is bad:

This is a recent tweet by Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis on GH)

    “Tweet from NLG’s event
so mob princess is gone, thank goodness #GHFCW”

    *********************

I know you gals love your love stories as we have talked about before.

For me what I miss and would love to see is a good old fashioned dramatic story that has a clear beginning, middle, and climax that is written intelligently, doesn’t have tons of rewritten history, characters true to themselves, doesn’t require the audience to act stupid to watch it, and clearly doesn’t require characters to act dumb to make it work.

  • Darcy

@Richard I do love the true love stories, but I would also have to agree with you on a good story without all the re-written changes of the characters history. I think that is part of the problem with GH right now the new writers didn’t do their homework on the show and alot of the characters are being changed.

  • Charlie Sheen WINNING!

I haven’t been into all of the soaps at the same time in a few years. I’ve slowed down on watching them on DVR and watching them live in the daytime now which helps me keep up with them more b/c I neglect stuff on DVR.

Y&R and B&B pretty much hold my attention everyday. DAYS and GH are spotty at times but still enjoyable although it seems like both shows are setting up more for the fall than the summer. Y&R and B&B is definitely focused on the summer right now.

Very interested to see how that DAYSASTER turns out.

  • Greg

Good Afternoon America’s premier week ratings are not good at all. In the following weeks they’ll most likely fall just as they did with The Revolution. ABC needs to just swallow their pride and bring back AMC and OLTL to their daytime schedule. Reboot those shows. Bring on new writers but keep a few of their long-time writers. Keep a headwriter or two like Lorraine Broderick who know how to tell great soap opera stories. All I can say is no more focusing on a few characters. Return the soaps to an ensemble show focusing on all of the characters. Keep diversity alive and well on the soaps too. Bring back past characters that fans truly loved to watch. And bring back villains fans truly loved to hate (like Heather Webber on GH). Tie up loose ends too like having Tad and Jesse (on AMC) pay for their misdeeds! If ABC did bring back AMC and OLTL at some point ratings would most likely be HUGE. If you please your customer they will keep coming back. Sadly ABC stopped pleasing their customers long ago which is why ratings began to fall.

OLTL should have stayed on the air. Its ratings were actually going UP UP UP over the course of their last year. Why cancel a soap whose ratings were going UP??? GH’s ratings are flat. GH should, IMO, go to a 30 minute format along with AMC. And bring back OLTL in an hour format. Forget these repetitive talk shows that are so tiring to watch. I just wish ABC would get a clue.

  • diana

@darcy and melanie, IMO, romance is a soap’s bread&butter. THAT is what made GH so popular in the ’80s, the LOVE story of Luke&Laura, NOT the crazy adventure stories. Those were just there to create conflict for Luke&Laura, Robert&Holly, Frisco&Felicia and all the other GREAT couples of the past. Now there are no adventures, so the writers have to dream up other conflicts for the couples. Unfortunately, all they can think of is to have them sleep with others. AND there really is no rooting factor for the new couples. Michael&Starr are just “okay” .. I mean, couldn’t they have remained friends, fighting their attraction for awhile? They give us everything too soon. I’m sure they’ll be in bed before the month is up. Soaps used to make us WAIT for it. We’d watch every day, thinking .. oh, they almost kissed! Maybe they’ll kiss tomorrow? This would go on for a year, lol. But by the time that kiss DID happen, boy, that was a moment to remember! THAT is what I will always remember the soaps for .. those moments of pure romance .. and the weddings. Those fabulous weddings! So sad we’ll probably never see their like again. :(

  • Richard

I have a question for Days fans or anyone else out there. I know I don’t have a TV at the present, but even online and stuff I see very little promotion for Days big event.

I don’t even watch Days but last fall it seemed online, on TV, everywhere all I would see were promotional things for Days big reboot and wait til September 23 stuff.

But even going to sites like You Tube and watching a lot of stuff online this summer, I have heard very little about the big cliffhanger until this week.

So are there a lot of promos for it and stuff. I don’t see how they expect to get big ratings for it if they are not promoting it big time.

  • Pinevalleylover

Its ok @joshua i hated GL as much as you hated AMC haha.

  • Justin

    @Richard

There hasn’t bee much promoting of the new storyline. The promo just launced yesterday for this coming Friday’s cliffhanger.

  • Jeff

I think Frank and Ron need to start clearing off quickly what is not working. They do have some good stuff happening, but here are some suggestions for all it’s worth. 1. Kate and Joe Jr. need to go ASAP. No more mobsters. 2. Bring by Kristen Storms, marry her off to Spinelli, and send them away to give them a happy ending. Spinelli has got to be one of the most annoying characters. 3. No more new characters. Either use more of what you have, bring back favorites, or bring on a few AMC characters. I read that GH may be casting a love interest for Alexis. Put her in a love triangle with Felicia and Mac instead or bring on Walt Wiley. Jackson is a lawyer, smart, her age, and was fed up with Erica last we saw. He wants a fresh start in a new city…. Or, bring back Jax as a love interest for Alexis, which would just fry Carly and Sonny’s butts to a crisp. 4. Send off Kristina back to wherever she came from. Let Trey, Starr, and Michael have a love triangle. 5. Send off Shawn and TJ. Totally not working. 6. For crying out loud, bring back Bobbie Spencer. 7. Bring crazy Heather to a close for a while. Put her back away in a sanitarium, as entertaining as she may be. 8. Johnny needs to pay for his sins. Kill him off in a few months or send him to prison (a bad guy on GH actually going to jail….might just be crazy enough to work). 9. No one is more boring than Ewen– time to go! 10. Put Liz/Lulu/Dante in a love triangle. 11. Bring on Natalie for a love quadrangle with Jason/Sam/John/Natalie. 12. Send Steve packing and have hot for trot Olivia in a triangle with Sonny and Carly. 13. Recast Dillon and Lucas, and have Dillon be gay, and let’s play some awesome scenes with Tracy, Edward, and Monica.

    Thoughts?

  • Debsafan

I don’t know what’s wrong with Day’s. The writers seem to get lazy and just don’t give a flip. They have good actors, They need to watch Young and the Restless for a week and see how to write. Stop dragging stuff to death. Get on with it. It takes to long to tell a story, and it’s the same old story over and over again. I can say that because I’ve been watching since 1968..

  • Frank

Where’s Felicia and Mac that could make for some good romance. Doesn’t any one pay for their crimes? Johnny /Heather It takes too long for redemption!!Get that baby back to Sam.

  • tj

I stopped being in to soaps close to early 2000. I’m still stuck in the 80′s when OLTL was good. Cord and Tina, Max and Gabrielle. When Michael malone took over I started to lose interest. When Vicki had the affair with Sloan it was the beginning of the end for any super couple. I’m sorry Passions fans, I know it was time for some kind of change but that was an embaraasment to the soap genre. Although I did watch the kids trapped in Hell storyline. Though I was a big OLTL fan I always thought Liz and Greg Vaughns Lucky were the only real couple with real problems on daytime. Though boring to some it was realistic. I still think drama can be done without bed hopping. Never cared for AMC as it truly felt like the”girliest” soap on the air. Guiding Light I watched in the Dylan and Julie, Mallet and Harley era. Soaps don’t have truly evil villians anymore, everyone of them they try to redee. Sometimes I want to feel in suspense when a character we love is in the real presence of evil. Young and restless was great at it with David Kimble, Lisa, Sheila, and Michael. But Michael has since been redeemed. But I will say he is an assett to the show. Soaps need to re group and understand their ratings aren’t going to change overnight. Stop trying new characters every other week and build up the ones you got. Stop trying to be clever with the writing and just concentrate on a good story. Soaps were cheesy in the 80′s to a point but we always knew the bad guy would end with some great action sequences and that action music we enjoyed from our individual soap. Thesedays there is no guarantee the truth or a villian will ever be revealed for the wrong doings so all seems pointless. Damn, I ranted. I keep up to date with most but nothing has attracted to watch as of late. Hope something changes soon.

  • JayTN

Richard/Rob R…I don’t know the exact production cycle for “Days” (maybe we should hope that Thomas Blake Castle returns to the board, since he strongly hinted that he was a ‘writer’ on that soap), but the writing duo of McPheron and Thomas were confirmed as being fired on April 4. Their material is still airing, almost four months later. I have heard that their material will end around the same time as the Olympic break, but I haven’t seen a start date for new head writers Gary Tomlin and Christopher Whitesell. I have, however, seen a September time table mentioned, which would put the time between the hiring of new head writers to the time that their material shows up at around 5 months.

As far as the ratings for CBS’s “Let’s Make a Deal”, I would be interested to see the ratings just for those affiliates that air it at 3:00 p.m. CBS gives its affiliates the option of airing LMAD at either 3:00 p.m. or at 10:00 a.m. (leading into daytime’s #1 show – “The Price is Right”). CBS had a similar arrangement during the final years of “Guiding Light”. With daytime being what it is (series airing at different times across the country), Nielsen just lumps all the numbers together, meaning that the ratings for LMAD represent both the 3:00 p.m. and the 10:00 a.m. airings.
