SYFY’S DEFIANCE COMMENCES SERIES PRODUCTION IN TORONTO JULY 24th

Groundbreaking Series Set to Launch in April 2013

NEW YORK, NY – July 23, 2012 – Defiance will commence series production in Toronto, ON starting July 24, having completed shooting on the pilot episode this past spring (for a total of 12 episodes/13 hours). The series stars Grant Bowler (Nolan), Julie Benz (Amanda Rosewater), Stephanie Leonidas (Irisa), Tony Curran (Datak Tarr), Jaime Murray (Stahma Tarr), Graham Greene (Rafe McCawley), Mia Kirshner (Kenya) and Fionnula Flanagan (Nicky).

An unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, Defiance is the first-ever convergence of television and Massive Multiplayer Online gaming, featuring an interconnected world and storylines that will co-exist throughout a scripted drama series and a multiplatform MMO shooter. Both the series and the game will debut simultaneously in April 2013.

Set in the near future, Defiance introduces an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers will follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, MO, while in the game, players will adventure in the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

The series is executive produced by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica; Hellcats) & Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica). Kevin Murphy serves as showrunner. Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) directed the pilot; Michael Nankin will serve as director/producer on the series. Defiance is produced by Universal Cable Productions. The game was named “Best MMORPG” from GameSpy at the recent E3 conference in June 2012 (among other accolades).

    Looking forward to this one next year – and my eyes will be peeled around town for any glimpses of the filming!

    Great news! 7 alien races? That’s ambitious.

  • Richard Steven Hack

    Mostly I will be watching for Julie Benz, Jaime Murray, and Tony Curran.

    Tony in particular is a long-time character actor who is really good. You might remember him as Marcus from the second Underworld movie or the Invisible Man from “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” or one of the hit squad from the second Blade movie or an appearance last season on Covert Affairs as a Brit spy wannabe.

    @Richard,

    Or Vincent van Gogh in Doctor Who.

    Looking forward to this show.

  • The End

    @Julie

    You could be more ambitious and look out for the Once Upon a Time production shoots instead. Seems a lot of people do that these days.

    Thats a Vancouver thing though.

  • bufftuff

    Glad to see Julie Benz get a co-starring TV gig again. Sounds interesting

  • Julie

    @The End – yeah well if I could get out to Vancouver I might – lol.
    No, the only reason I say I might keep my eyes open is that the local (Toronto) productions frequently use the sidestreets around our office building – for instance we got a building memo that today Nikita will be filming out there, so the back entrance may inaccessible.
    Mind you, even with all the productions that film around us, you never see anyone except crew.

    Still fun though.

  • Tom

    Any word on where in Toronto they are filming. Would love to check this out at some point!

    I don’t feel anything about this one way or the other. I remember when I used to be excited about shows on Syfy but IDK, now, not so much. It might be fine, it might be terrible but I a lot of times I get the feeling the Syfy programmers wouldn’t care (or be able to identify it) one way or the other as long as they had a show to put on the schedule. Well, at least with this show they can point to it and shut up viewers who are always complaining about the reality shows. LOL (Yes, cynical and grumpy today. ;))

  • Steve

    SciFi on SyFy?? Shocking.

  • Vincent Hanna

    Curran also had a small part in Gladiator. He is the guy who is about to assassinate Maximus right before he kicks all their behinds and escapes.
