Deadline reports that  the first night of competition in the London Summer Olympics, NBC on Saturday drew an 18.0 overnight household  rating and 33 share (8:30-11:30 p.m. ET/PT) and was the best ever overnight rating for the first night of competition for a non-U.S. Summer Olympics - 8% higher than Beijing and 22% above Athens, the last European Olympics.

Good for NBC! At least with the Olymmpic Games they can get (more than) decent ratings!

  • Atlanta

Great ratings for NBC Olympic but absolutely everyone is complaining about the coverage and 8 hour tape delay here on the west coast. ugh

  • Longtime Today Show Viewer

Next thing you will tell me NBC didn’t show the Lochte gold live. Wait, what?

  • Matt Anderson

The thirst for the Olympics is extremely high this year these are some abnormally high numbers for the games, NBC has to be super happy.

I love the Chicago Fire promos during these games. Can’t wait for that show now.

Great ratings for NBC Olympic but absolutely everyone is complaining about the coverage and 8 hour tape delay here on the west coast. ugh

Or you know, you could use the computer and internet that you clearly have to watch the live stream that they have of EVERY sport which doesn’t have a delay. But I suspect you won’t since that would leave you with nothing to complain about…

Well I’m not complaining about the tape delay. Say what you will about how NBC handles the Olympics, I don’t mind tape delay for two reasons: the first is that people are a lot more likely to watch in primetime (that’s why NBC saw 30 million viewers last night, something I don’t think would’ve happened in the afternoon). The second and more important reason — this is simply the nature of network television. Affiliates want to be airing local and national news in the early evening hours and on weekdays want to air Today at 7 am local time. Sorry if you other commentors loathe tape delay, but based on NBC’s ratings from the last two days, it’s the smarter option.

I never really got the whole complaining about tape delays. You already should know if the Olympics are overseas its impossible to see the games in prime time live due to time zone restrictions.

Its the 21st century if you want to watch it live go online and stream it or wake your lazy ass up and watch the games in the morning or daytime.

NBC has to get high ratings in prime time so how can you blame them. IDIOTS I SWEAR!
