NBC BROADCAST SIGNIFICANTLY WIDENS ITS ADVANTAGE OVER ABC COMPARED TO LAST TWO SUMMER OLYMPICS

NEW YORK – August 7, 2012 – The first full week of the London 2012 Olympic Games delivered “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams’” best ever total viewer advantage over both ABC World News and CBS Evening News, and the NBC broadcast’s best ever A25-54 advantage over ABC (*since at least the start of Nielsen’s people meters in September 1987).

According to Nielsen Media Research data, the NBC weeknight broadcast July 30 - August 3, 2012 delivered an average of 10.849 million total viewers, +3,998,000 more than ABC "World News’" 6.851 million, and +5,352,000 more than CBS "Evening News’” 5.497 million.

Saturday Nightly (August 4, 2012) delivered 10.318 million total viewers, +6,488,000 (+169%) more than World News Saturday and +7,391,000 (+253%) more than CBS Saturday Evening News.

Sunday Nightly (August 5, 2012) delivered 13.705 million total viewers, +8,847,000 (+182%) ahead of World News Sunday and +10,404,000 (+315%) more than CBS Sunday Evening News.

“NBC Nightly News” Total Viewers (Monday-Friday), as Brian Williams anchored from London:

  • Nightly delivered 10.849 million total viewers, +3,998,000 (+58%) more than ABC "World News’" 6.851 million, and +5,352,000 (+97%) more than CBS "Evening News’” 5.497 million.
  • Nightly had its best ever total viewer advantage over both ABC World News and CBS Evening News (since at least the start of People Meters in Sep ’87).
  • Nightly had its best total viewer delivery since the week of January 31, 2011 (revolution in Cairo).
  • Versus week #1 (8/11-8/15/08) of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Nightly was up in homes (+11%), total viewers (+15% or +1,442,000), and rating W/M/A25-54 (+20%/+4%/+12%).
  • Versus week #1 (8/16-8/20/04) of the 2004 Athens Olympics, Nightly was flat in homes and up +6% (+589,000) in total viewers.
  • Nightly’s +3.998 million total viewer advantage over ABC is up from a +2.470 million advantage during the comparable week #1 in Beijing and up from a +2.193 million advantage during the comparable week #1 in Athens.
  • Nightly delivered a 7.2/15 Household rating, ahead of World News’ 4.6/10 and Evening News’ 3.8/8.
  • On Tuesday, Nightly averaged 11.523 million viewers, the best single-day delivery since February 2, 2011 (Brian anchored from Cairo during height of Egyptian revolution).
  • Nightly has won for 151 consecutive weeks, and in 198 of the past 199 weeks in total viewers.
  • Season-to-date, Nightly leads World News by +1,052,000 total viewers.

“NBC Nightly News” A25-54 (Monday-Friday):

  • Nightly averaged 3.346 million A25-54 (000) viewers, beating World News by +1,612,000 viewers, the best ever viewer advantage (since at least the start of People Meters). In addition, Nightly beat CBS Evening News by +1,722,00 viewers, its best advantage since the week of March 31, 2003.
  • Nightly delivered a 2.8 A25-54 rating, 100% (+1.4 rating points) ahead of ABC’s 1.4 rating and +115% (+1.5 points) CBS’s 1.3 rating.
  • On Monday, Nightly averaged a 3.0 A25-54 rating, the best single-day delivery since February 2, 2011.
  • Nightly had its best rating A25-54 since the week of January 31, 2011.
  • This is the 193rd consecutive week Nightly has topped World News in A25-54 (000).
  • Season-to-date, Nightly leads World News by +382,000 A25-54 viewers.

Saturday “NBC Nightly News,” as Lester Holt anchored from London:

  • Saturday Nightly delivered 10.318 million total viewers, +6,488,000 (+169%) more than World News Saturday and +7,391,000 (+253%) more than CBS Saturday Evening News.
  • Versus the second Saturday (8/21/04) of the Athens 2004 Olympics, Saturday Nightly was up in homes (+5%), total viewers (+16% or +1,386,000) and rating W/M/A25-54 (+15%/+7%/+11%).
  • Saturday Nightly’s +6,488,000 million total viewer advantage over ABC is up from a +4,554,000 advantage during the comparable Saturday in Beijing.
  • Season-to-date, Saturday Nightly leads World News Saturday by +1,565,000 total viewers.
  • In A25-54 (000), Saturday Nightly topped World News Saturday by +2,827,000 viewers and CBS Saturday Evening News by +3,001,000.
  • Saturday Nightly delivered a 3.1 A25-54 rating, +2.4 points ahead of ABC’s 0.7 rating and +2.5 points more than CBS’ 0.6 rating.

Sunday “NBC Nightly News,” as Brian Williams anchored from London:

  • Sunday Nightly delivered 13.705 million total viewers, +8,847,000 (+182%) ahead of World News Sunday and +10,404,000 (+315%) more than CBS Sunday Evening News.
  • Versus the second Sunday (8/17/08) of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Sunday Nightly was up in homes (+13%), total viewers (+18% or +2,070,000) and rating W/M/A25-54 (+8%/+5%/+5%).
  • Versus the second Sunday (8/22/04) of the Athens 2004 Olympics, Sunday Nightly was up in homes (+12%), total viewers (+22% or +2,464,000), and rating W/M/A25-54 (+17%/+8%/+11%).
  • Sunday Nightly’s +8,847,000 million total viewer advantage over ABC was up from a +7,648,000 advantage during the comparable Sunday in Beijing and up from a +6,842,000 advantage during the comparable Sunday in Athens.
  • Season-to-date, Sunday Nightly leads World News Sunday by +1,036,000 total viewers.
  • Sunday Nightly delivered a 4.1 A25-54 rating, +3 points ahead of ABC’s 1.1 rating, and +3.3 rating points more than CBS (0.8).
