Royal Pains was Wednesday's top cable show with a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating. Shark Week special Shark Fight was the number two cable original with a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating.

We only receive the top 100 cable shows for adults 25-54 for the whole day from our primary source, if you don't see your show it was not in that top 100 list.

The list below is long but you can use your browsers "find on page" feature (usually CTRL+F or CMD+F) to search - that's probably the easiest way to find Wednesday night's episode of your favorite show.

    @Zach

    People commented on Dallas because it was the most anticipated show of the summer and it has been only a decent performer, nothing more. Plus its 0.7-0.8 weren’t good for any show, otherwise F&B would be doing great.

    R&I always had a better demo than the one it’s getting now, but I can understand the loss of lead-in “excuse”. And while being “only” the summer finale, it still was a finale. Every cable show gets a spike in the ratings for its summer finale. It’s the winter and season finales that are lower since they have broadcast competition (see the decision of TNT of wanting 6 finale episodes and THE final episode of The Closer in the summer).

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    OK To give some perspective about the ratings. It is VERY hard to know what is “good” these days. Almost every scripted show on cable is down significantly year over year on cable so the baseline these days to know what is “good” has not settled yet. And far more importanatly at these levels 0.7 – 1.3 we at USA do not know what to think until we see the Live+3 /Live+7 and C3 ratings. For USA shows more than anyone else’s, the lifts are so high — + 70% to + 100% for Live+7 vs Live+Same — that the final audience numbers truly look remarkably different than Live+Same. And while C3 is ultimately what is sold we look at Live+7 to gauge true viewer interest/behavior, scheduling strategies, and marketing strategies

    Wow for Million Dollar listing,, I’m not sure but is that a series high? Glad to see Baby Daddy and Melissa & Joey doing so well. Also good for Hollywood Exes, I think its the 3rd highest rated show on vh1 for the week and is always getting close to 1 mil hopefully it keeps increasing.

  • What?

    Royal Pains is starting to fall off for USA. Even without Dallas it couldn’t capitalize like it should’ve. It’s looking pretty good for TNT to take the cable title this year.

    Baby Daddy seems to have finally settled in, maybe it’ll grow in its last two weeks from here.

  • Martin

    ^^
    As long as Political Animals is renewed i don’t care.

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @WHAT?

    As noted above – every show has started to fall off

    Also FYI on TNT to take the cable title this year it is not really feasible, TNT is behind USA by -20% in total viewers and about -10% in demos. Plus with their originals over mostly and ours still going + 3 hour RAW we gain the post Summer advanatge

    The core of what makes USA #1 is the mix of originals, WWE and acquired series. SVU/NCIS more than double TNT’s acquired series and RAW each week is very powerful. TNT needs a true off-net hit or addtional sporting event to take #1 (not from USA per se but in general)

  • silvit

    @Ted Linhart

    Yes, but it’s undeniable that other USA shows do better and held better year to year. I bet that The Live+ 7 days or C3 are better for shows like Burn Notice and Suits than Royal Pains.

    When TNT posts its spin (and which spin ;-)), the higher live+ 7 days ratings belong to the shows that did better in their live+same day.

    Nonetheless, USA shows crash TNT in the 18-34, so they always do better if when it seems they are doing worse. :D

  • silvit

    @Ted Linhart

    Just to confirm what a turd The Mentalist is for TNT. Considering they acquired another turd (Castle), USA can claim its advantage on TNT for years to come. ;-)

    @What

    TBS does much better than TNT. With all the BBT repeats it can easily become the #1 cable channel this year.

  • Tom

    Adios Necessary Roughness! I loved it last season but the writers have taken what was an oddly compelling story and completely wrecked everything. The family centric theme of last season has been jettisoned in favor of Danni’s relationship to a bunch of guys from a mythical football team. What a bore. The ratings have understandably been sinking all season and this week ran 1.5 MM viewers and three demo points behind its lead in. I’ll miss Callie Thorne, but it’s time to stick a fork in this one.

  • Matt

    Mama Drama ratings? It was moved to 10pm the next few weeks.

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @silvit

    Yes no doubt we have some shows stronger than others – although it can vary by category (Royal can be #1 in total viewers while Burn or Suits can be #1 in demos) But in the end we dont judge our #3 #4 or #5 shows as problems just because other shows rank higher. We have had 10 successes over the last 6-7 years but one of them was always be the lowest ranked yet it was not a concern. That won’t always be true of course – depends the spread of #7 to #1 etc.

    And yes sometimes our rankers look one way on LS and other ways on L7. We have shows that get 10-20 point higher lifts than others so show x has a higher L7 than show y but in LS show y was higher.

    While context is so key in understanding ratings, the vacummn (sp?) of one our originals vs each other is not a way we try to look at things. We look at how other originals do on cable overall, who produces it, how much does it cost, what can it be paired with in the future, are we happy with the execution, etc. So in the end our “happiness” with a show – when not talking about extremes on the low when lifts won’t change the perspective or of course extremes on the high when it is all gravy with playback – rarely is set by any week’s Live+Same rating these days. Just trying to provide some insight into how we in ratings/network-land utilize the data

  • Jared

    @bb

    Hollywood Exes is the 3rd highest rated show on VH1 after LAHH ATL & Single Ladies. I hope to see the show renewed because I’ve actually grown to really enjoy it..with a show with no real “drama”..i would say it’s doing pretty well.

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @Tom

    Necessary did 2.5M not 1.5M. Sorry you are not enjoying… The show will have a Summer finale and then return with more episodes later

  • joey

    I have a question. So say I have a show that has 7 million viewers and gets a 1.2 demo and I have another show that has 3 million viewers that gets a demo of. 8 do I keep the show with the. 8 demo because it skews younger and cancel the older skewing show with the 1.2 better demo?

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @silvit is correct TBS is the bigger threat but only on 18-49 – total viewers still USA (TBS 6th place on that right now for YTD)

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @joey

    Since the 7M show also has a bigger demo than that is the winner in by book. I am happy with older if it brings in more of the younger folks in volume with it

    However my book needs more answers in the real world… how much does each show cost to make? Who produces them? Which show would seem to hold up over time or repeat better? Is one more compatible as a lead-in with another? what network am I – who is my advertiser seeking?

  • Tom

    @ Ted

    What I said was that Necessary Roughness has 1.5 MM fewer viewers than Royal Pains.I apologize if I didn’t make that clear. What I also meant, however, is that the storyline for the show is completely unfocussed. The kids have pretty much disappeared and Danni’s interaction with her non-jock patients have been minimized. You could just as easily call this the T.K. show because he’s the character half the show is now built around.

  • The End

    @silvit

    You’re pretty lucky Castle isn’t airing new episodes at the moment, otherwise your assessment of the show would of provoked a reaction from a dozen or more Castle fanboys/girls and this ratings topic would end up derailed as a result.

    That said I agree with mostly everything you’ve said besides the Dallas point, the numbers were good enough for TNT, not brilliant but good. As I said weeks ago.

  • Ted Linhart (USA Network)

    @tom – oh sorry didnt read that right – gotcha. That happened multiple weeks last year too (admittedly when everything was higher on LS)

  • The End

    By the way, for anyone following Alphas here, the network will be doing random marathons of the show, to drum up interest. This typically isn’t a good sign but every little helps.

    Posting here as this is, infact a cable topic.
