The 2nd week of the Olympics didn’t hurt the soaps in Total Viewers at all like it did the 1st week.

GH did well in 18-49 too and topped the 18-34. But lost in the male again.

It will be interesting next week to see where things go with Days back in the picture. And no Olympics.

Will they all hold the same? Or were some of the increases due to Days fans trying other soaps instead of the Olympics?

  • Pat

Good to see Y and R back up . It’ll be interesting to see what next weeks looks like with Days back in the mix.

  • Darcy

Looking at these ratings the olympics didn’t hurt the soaps this week.

I think these ratings for all soaps aren’t that great. I think the problem with soaps is the writing. I can’t say anything about Days because I have never watched that soap and B&B I just started watching. I do think the problem with Y&R and GH is the writing. I am watching Y&R right now and I don’t think the writing is all the great, but it is better than GH’s writing.

I think that both Days and GH will be gone in 2013 and Y&R and B&B will probably be gone with in five years if these ratings for all four soaps don’t get a lot better.

  • JACK

Every soap is up and I think the trend will continue then stabilize. DAYS and once GH advances l hour, they should do better as well. Why am I so optimistic instead? I’m sick of the alternative.

  • Brad

Glad to see GH is up! I think people are tired of 9 million talk shows in the daytime. That might be why The View is down to 2.42 million viewers. lol. But I’m glad the soaps stayed farely stable this week and GH went UP in everything and hit #1 in 18-34.

  • Nick

    Nice increase for GH.

  • Richard

Brad, You may be right but I will hold judgement until next week to see the affect that Days being off has on the soaps.

People that normally watch Days that weren’t interested in the Olympics and wanted to watch a soap had only 3 soaps to choose from and might have sampled them.

Just like I said last week I think it is hard to throw blame around these last 2 weeks as to anything with the ratings.

You had the Olympics in the picture and you had shows that were normally shown that weren’t. So you had a lot of displaced viewers.

Next week will be a normal week. It’s just like all those viewers that NBC gained over the last 2 weeks looking at how their primetime ratings have fallen back down — those viewers didn’t even stay with them. Or even bite much into any of the promotion for shows during the Olympics.

I am happy the soaps did as well as they did this week. The last Olympics they didn’t do as well. The test will be what happens when Days is thrown back in and see if any of the gains were due to displaced viewers or not.

A new writing regime will be taking over for Y&R soon, so hopefully that will help the ratings. Great photo of Tracey E. Bregman as Lauren, btw.

  • Rhonda

I haven’t watched any soaps in several weeks. I am happy to see they did well last week. The only reason I haven’t watched soaps is the writing lately stinks on all of them. When does the new writing team start on Y&R? I think I will start watching Y&R again when the new writers start and see what happens.

I think The View is in repeats until after Labor Day. Last week, only Wednesday’s episode of The View was new, but that had been taped a couple weeks beforehand. As much as I want GH to survive, even repeats of The View beat original GH episodes and that is sad. GH did beat it in women 18-49 but not by much considering the repeats.

I’m finding it so hard to get into Cartini’s version of GH. They are trying to make OLTL.2 work, but it’s not. Couldn’t stand McPain on OLTL and can’t stand him on GH. And what good is killing Nat & Liam offscreen without showing Viki’s reaction to her daughters death? They need to let OLTL rest in soap opera heaven. GH can’t afford any more viewer losses and they are down a quarter million from last year. Viewers are not responding positively to this OLTL version2.

  • rob60990

GH has been pretty good lately.

  • rob60990

“And what good is killing Nat & Liam offscreen without showing Viki’s reaction to her daughters death?”

That was a rumor from a while ago and Natalie & Liam are back in Llanview now.

  • Darcy

Wow I haven’t read any recaps for GH is a long time and I didn’t know they killed off Nat and Liam. Great that is another dead baby story for GH. When did they kill them off?

  • PJ

David please get on here and question Richard! Last week he blames the talk shows low ratings on the olympics. Now this week GH is up and instead of admitting people are enjoying how good Gh is, he blames it on tje olympics, lol. I would say part of the credit has to go to the return of Sebastian Roche as Jerry Jaxx. These ratings are from his first full week back. He def brought in the key 18-49 and 18-34 demo. So much for the claim there is no interest in Jerry’s return.

  • PJ

Darcy they did not kill them off Natalie just left John after finding out he kissef Sam. The actress who plays her is not joining.GH so lucky that the writers respect character history to mention her at all. Them being dead was a rumour but never happened

  • PJ

Anything involving Natalie is off screen just have her and the kid stay in London or wherever and stop even mentioning her

  • Mike

A very slow rise in key demo is exactly what we want for GH. A small bump each week shows folks are coming back. YES!!!!! If this trend continues my favorite soap may stay another year.

  • diana

GH didn’t kill off Natalie&Liam, but they did dispose of them in a very stupid way, Natalie packed up Liam and flew to London for ONE DAY, because she was mad that John kissed Sam. They evidently flew right back to Llanview the next day, and Clint&Natalie took out a restraining order against John. And ALL OF A SUDDEN John is DESPERATE to see his son, the son who was not as important to him as getting revenge for his dead sister was .. he was away from this son for MONTHS, but NOW he says “oh I can’t miss even a day of him growing up” Baloney! Whole thing is contrived. I watched until the Jasam breakup, and now I’m done. Watching DAYS now. I hope DAYS’ ratings go up for this week, it was really great, so sad they killed off Jack again, Matthew Ashford and Melissa Reeves knocked it out of the park, though.

  • MBmomof3

    Impressive! GO SOAPS!

I’m not liking how GH is making Natalie the “bad guy” off screen. Nat would NEVER keep Liam from John. I hope they bring her on to kick butt & take names. I know it seems either fans love her or hate her, but she is one of my faves. And the rest of them can “love to hate her”. A great, well-written character evokes strong emotions.

(For what it’s worth, John wouldn’t be acting like such a jerk either, but this is GH, not OLTL). STILL LOVING IT!

I think all 4 soaps have been pretty good. I still think each network needs at least 1 (or 2) soaps on their daytime schedule to break up the monotony and identify their brand.
