Diana, I agree about John…gone for months avenging a sister he didn’t even know, making out with a stranger, and now Natalie is the evil wench keeping him from the son he can’t stand to miss for one moment? How ridiculous. I’m not a big fan of this version of John McBain.

This comment is carried over from last week’s discussion…

MBmomof3/David…like Nielsen did with the ratings for syndicated programs, the daytime ratings need an asterisk (*) beside them the last two weeks due to Olympic coverage. I don’t believe the ratings declines for the daytime network talk shows last week necessarily show a sudden lack of interest in them. A more mundane explanation is that the more popular Olympic events (i.e. swimming, gymnastics, etc) were front loaded into the first week. The less popular sports tend to get the coverage in week two. If the ratings for the daytime talk shows (all of them, except “The View”, say small increases) remain depressed next week and beyond, then there could be some actual evidence that people are tiring of all the talk.

David…the way that the Nielsen system works is two fold. You have the ‘fast nationals’ (which include only the top markets) and the ‘finals’ (which include all the markets from around the country, and factor out any pre-emptions, such as for preseason NFL action). These don’t really apply to the daytime ratings we see, since they are the weekly ‘finals’. In this case, if the Baltimore ABC affiliate keeps GH at 3:00 p.m. (ET), then the ratings for GH will include the 3:00 p.m. airing in Baltimore, not whatever Baltimore will air at 2:00 p.m.

We have heard several people indicate that “Days of Our Lives” airs at 2:00 p.m. where they live and will compete against GH on ABC. The ratings for “Days” that would be listed above (if they were not pre-empted) are not merely from those affiliates that air “Days” at 1:00 p.m. (when NBC wants it to be aired), but from all the airings of “Days” across the country, regardless of what time it airs…whether at 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 a.m.

Where I live all three soaps Days, GH and Y&R will come on at the same time in September when the time changes. For several weeks I haven’t been watching any soaps just enjoying my summer. Once the new writers take over for Y&R I will give it another try. In September when the time changes if I am watching any soaps it will be Y&R.

  • Lynne

Well, I think John will be fine, especially when GH needed someone else than Dante. Natalie even on OLTL was a witch sometimes, remember how long it took her to tell John Liam was even her son? I really like the changes on GH, especially the frequent story lines, don’t much care for the Trey/Dad/Christina thing, but we’ll see how it plays out.
Also, in my area, they are also moving Anderson to the 3:00 time slot, so now we have Katie, Anderson and Dr. Phil! She’s got some competition.

  • MBmomof3

Lynne, I agree John will be fine. And you are right, Natalie was no saint on OLTL. But, I am still a big fan. She physically has a strong resemblance to my oldest daughter, so from day one I’ve liked the character, partly for that reason. Luckily my daughter makes better life choices. But that Buchanan money would go a long way toward paying down her student debt! LOL!

I’d watch Anderson Cooper if forced to watch a talk show. I’ve watched it a few times and he has some interesting guests. Also, he makes his show about the guests and the days’s topic – not about him. That said, I’d still choose cable or a good read over a talk show.

Looks like the soaps were able to rebound against the Olympics.

I’m wondering what the ratings will be in the first week without the Olympics next week plus the return of DAYS after their biggest cliffhanger event in 2 years with DAYSaster.

GH vs. DAYS is going to be interesting this fall in those central timezones.

  • Charlie Sheen

I wonder how the soap ratings will look come November. I think the soaps will have their best numbers in a while around that time.

  • Greg

General Hospital would be SMART to keep Robin Mattson on but playing a totally different character…either a sister or twin of Heather. But not make her crazy evil BUT make her wicked without resorting to murder and mayhem. Robin Mattson is a GOLD MINE. She rocks every scene. I’ve always considered her one of THE BEST ACTRESSES on television. So GH do the right thing and keep ROBIN MATTSON on GH! She is absolutely WONDERFUL and ALWAYS interesting to watch!!!

  • Lynne

MBMom, I totally agree. If I watch early in the day, sometimes I tune to HLN where it has the trials going on. Right now Drew Peterson is on trial and he’s the one whose 4th wife went missing and 3rd wife was found in the bathtub dead. It’s pretty interesting. I do still like my escapism, however, and GH provides it. Totally loved OLTL, but I do like the Todd and Heather combo. If your daughter looks like Natalie, she must be georgeous. Hope she wears better shirts, though! Natalie, even for a CSI investigator was a little provocative! (maybe I’m getting old!)

GH is dying on the vine. It’s been in last place for ages; losing OVER A QUARTER OF MILLION VIEWERS since last year is NOT an improvement. All the cheerleaders for GH would have you believe that people record it, watch it online, set their DVRs, etc. The 2-headed monster that is Cartooni has been in place for months and the show is no better off now than it was. Some of the people that were already watching it may think the quality has improved, but they have done NOTHING to get new viewers in and get the show out of the cellar.

Where were all the cheerleaders the last 2 weeks, when the Olympic ratings proved that people WILL watch new programs, live, during the day, even though they could also watch it on their computers, on their DVRs, etc.? The Olympics were watched by almost THREE TIMES AS MANY PEOPLE as GH. It’s time to face facts: people have moved on from soaps.

  • Rhonda

In the mountain time zone GH will go up against both Days and Y&R starting in September.

Katie will go up against People’s Court and The Talk. I think Katie will probably win in the mountain time zone.

  • Richard

    Rhonda,

Here under my affiliate, GH will go against Days and The Talk.

Unless they change Katie will go against Let’s Make A Deal and The Steve Wilkos Show (That may change come September)

  • MBmomof3

Lynne, I like to follow the trials as well. The Drew Peterson trial is as juicy as any soap! My daughter’s style favors “hipster” shabby chic. She’s as “busty” as Natalie, but only uses her assets in appropriate settings. Typically no tight, low cut tops for her.

Greg, I like your thinking. That would be awesome!

Charlie Sheen, I hope you are right about the soap ratings, but soaps will be going up against each other in several markets come fall. That could hurt them in the ratings.

me, I disagree with your logic. The Olympics are a special event that many Americans would watch even if given other options. I watched them in primetime. I’m not a Neilson household and almost always DVR my soaps, watch online or SOAPNet.

In my area GH will be going up against DAYS, People’s Court, The Talk, and I believe Maury.

OLTL used to kill all of these shows on a daily basis during its last year of existence in my local affiliate. DAYS was the only program in that timeslot putting up a good fight.

I think GH will start to perform similar to OLTL as it won’t have a weak lead-in anymore and a stronger one.

Katie might be in trouble as it doesn’t air directly after GH in my area. It airs at 3pm instead of 2pm.

  • LeBron is not Clutch

My Affiliate’s numbers for that slot (October 31-November 4, 2011)

    1. OLTL – 3.3
    2. DAYS – 2.6
    3. Maury – 2.1
    4. People’s Court – 1.8
    5. The Talk – 0.7

  • brad

What do those numbers equal in total viewers?

  • Stacy

What i am puzzled about is why these soaps are so far down from last year at this time. I watch days and gh although as of Sept 10th i have to choose between days and gh because in texas they will come on at the same time. IMO days is better this summer than last summer. Gh goes both ways for me some of last summer was better than this summer but some of this summer is better. It will be a dificult choice for me but if days keeps going like it did this last week i will watch days when gh changes times. Days was great this last week. I’m excited to see days rating for this last week.

  • Richard

Stacy, Soaps for the last few years have been down from the year before. The numbers this year just seem to be slightly higher.

GH had a really bad summer last year even with OLTL as a lead in. So I never buy the lead in because even among soap fans they always said that OLTL was doing so good. But GH set all time lows all throughout the summer last year.

For GH to be down by as much as it this year is still not good.

Y&R has been the one to shed the most viewers in the last few years though. It has really lost more viewers than any of the soaps.

B&B still has week where it is down but for the most part B&B has stabilized better than any of the soaps. Yet even with it being up most weeks CBS still cut its budget and forced the actors to take a pay cut. So basically if a soap is even doing good they still don’t get any credit at budget time. And I am sure that is due to even though they brought the 18-49 up for B&B the ratings still aren’t that great in the demos.

Here’s hoping that Jerry’s epidemic claims the lifes of: Spinelli, Shawn, Steve, Ewen, Joe, Kate, and Johnny (dying a hero to make up for all of his evils!), along with a few other fringe characters that are useless and hardly ever on. It brings the return of Kristen Storms as Maxie, Robin is found and reunited with Patrick, and they take off together, and Bobbie returns and finds out her entire family has almost died 14 times each she was last in PC. Also, Natalie realizes she is a fool for what she just did and moves to PC to fight for her man, and the triangle become a hot quadrangle.

  • Richard

Jeff, You may get your wish on Ewen, as someone posted over at SON — it was the girl that does the episode counts — she said that in the last few weeks that Nathan Butler’s place had changed in the credits. She said he has always been listed with the contract actors but now he is listed with the actors who are guest stars in the credits.

So evidently his status has changed but no official announcement has been made.

My guess he is definitely one of the characters to be expendable during this story.

I love your ideas esp. the part of Joe, Kate and Johnny being gone. Not sure about Natalie coming over unless it was to take John McBain back to Llanview.
