TV Ratings Friday: Preseason Football Leads FOX to Another 18-49 Win, '20/20' Leads 'Dateline' Newsmagazine

 Due to the nature of live sports programming the ratings for FOX (NFL Preseason Football) are approximate and subject to more than the typical adjustments in the final numbers. See below for more information on these Fast Affiliate Ratings.

FOX won the night with adults 18-49, but ABC led with total viewers.

Pre-season NFL football aired on other networks in several markets, so expect adjustments to the numbers when the final ratings are released on Monday.

Note: Sorry, we only have half hours ratings today. In the meantime, averaging these half hours into ratings for each show will often lead to errors.

In late-night metered-market households Friday night:

  • In Nielsen's 56 metered markets, household results were: "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," 2.7/7; CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman," 2.0/5 with an encore; and ABC's combo of "Nightline," 3.0/7; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 1.5/4 with an encore.

  • In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.7/3; "Late Show," 0.5/2 with an encore; "Nightline," 0.8/4; and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," 0.5/2 with an encore.

  • At 12:35 a.m., "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" (1.3/4 in metered-market households) beat CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" (1.1/3 with an encore). In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "Late Night" (0.4/2 in 18-49) topped "Late Late Show" (0.3/2 with an encore).

  • At 1:35 a.m., "Last Call with Carson Daly" averaged a 0.8/3 in metered-market households with an encore and a 0.3/2 in adults 18-49 in the 25 markets with local people meters.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live football game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    @ Dennis: Yeah it did repeat well, it did well surprisingly on a new night where it was expected to fail. It was doing the best out of the comedy repeats on the network. Not sure what John A was talking about.

    @ Raf: When it comes to Nikita I think its done well enough on Fridays to reach season 3. If its demos are so bad then why would The CW bring it back this year? More than likely its the amount of money it makes overseas.

    What makes the Whitney repeat numbers impressive is that it was getting its ratings with no help on a lower hut-level night like Fridays grabbing almost 3 million viewers. Then when you looked at the way Community repeated it always bled.

    The fact that The Office is the more established show airing on a higher hut-level night makes its ratings look pathetic in comparison.

    Nikita will be ajusted down to a .3 or .2 for sure. We still dont know the lead in for Nikita because remember ANTM is starting next week. That means when Nikita starts on October 19 ANTM will be ending is season shortly after that. I am guessing some time in November. We dont know what the CW will put on before Nikita after ANTM ends.

    I believe the AGT repeat replaces the one from Sunday, which is football from this point onwards.

    That said, I don’t understand NBC’s repeat scheduling of AGT at all.

    NBC show new episodes of AGT on Tuesday 8-10pm and Wednesday 9-10pm (results show).

    NBC is showing repeats on Wednesday 8-9pm, Friday 8-9pm, Saturday 8-9pm and Monday 8-9pm. I’m not really sure what they’re repeating. Are they repeating the same results show 4 times?

    Expect AGT to be adjusted down a couple of tenths in finals due to football pre-emptions.

    Those noting likely Nikita adjustment are not “haters”, they are “knowledgeable”.

    The CW affiliates in these markets had NFL games on Friday night, others may have had baseball.

    With 6 NFL pre-season games last night and at least 6 major CW affiliates airing the local games instead of Nikita (including Los Angeles for the Oakland game) I would guess Nikita will fall to a .2 for the evening. Not sure it’ll do much better this season on Friday than last, especially moved to the tougher 9/8c slot. But fans get another 22/23 episodes, so none of that matters right now. As for another renewal, I suppose it will all depend on how the rest of the CW slate does. I only watched it occasionally because it came on right before Supernatural. Without SPN behind it. I doubt I’ll watch it at all (I was a fan of the original, not so much this version) since I can go out Friday nights again. :)

    There are obviously a lot of Nikita haters out there. Look at how riled up people get on Nikita’s ratings. They try so hard to prove a negative point on Nikita’s numbers. What’s the point of pointing this stuff out when Nikita is going into its third season? The show must be doing something right in order to make it to season 3. Just like the rest of the CW shows they do awful ratings but make a ton of money internationally so do the ratings really matter that much for these CW shows if they keep coming back with these ratings?
