I agree with you on FV tweets. It wasn’t that long ago he tweeted that a day was a must watch day and i watched the show and i am still wondering why he thought it was so great. I do hope that the big surprised doesn’t turn out to be another OLTL character on gh. I am so sick of OLTL being pushed on us that when gh changes times in September I’m probably going to watch days.

  • Justin

Looks like it’s going to be another good week for Days…

  • McKayla McPerfect

The soaps are on fire right now, none of them are going anywhere anytime soon.

Next week is looking good for DAYS I’ll be watching for sure.

  • Mike

I am so happy for Days fans. I’m just as happy for GH fans for we have another slight rise from the previous week. Is it just me or do Kate and Sonny have absolutely no chemistry? Liz and Jason, chemistry. Jason and Sam, chemistry. Sam and John, chemistry. Sonny and Kate???

  • Mike

Okay, watching this week’s GH online and on Wednesday episode, Kate speaking to Todd referenced Erica Kane, Lucy Coe and Blair Cramer as possible publishers? We have a secret return? Hmmmm….

  • Jeff

I was thinking that maybe Anna finds Alex, her twin sister? That’s a bit to do with AMC but not really. If it were Erica or Greenlee that would be a lot to do with AMC. It would be awesome to bring back Lucy. So happy to read that Frank wants to bring back Bobbie. Hope they can work it out soon. It’s insane she was let go in the first place, as she is so intricately connected to so much of the cast. Hope Y&R fans are ready for JFP and the firings of veteran actors (especially actresses) that is sure to come. She will undoubtedly put that show on a slow path to destruction like she did with GH.

  • Richard

Jeff, Someone at one of the sites posted yesterday about her track record at GH. I had forgotten how many folks she got rid of. In all when she started at GH she had 20 veteran actors still on contract/recurring status with GH. A few of them were doing double duty with Port Charles and GH. She relegated all of them to only appearances on Port Charles and slowly got rid of all but 3 of them — Tony Geary, Jane Elliott, and John Ingle by the time she left GH. All of it can be mostly attributed to her as when she got rid of some Guza was not the head writer and I think it was according to this person even before Frons got there. She just got partners in crime when both got there.

For right now it seems most Y&R fans are welcoming her with open arms. I guess they are so tired of what they have they will take anything. Remember folks not all change is good. But if she succeeds in bringing back a certain African American actress to the show as rumors are saying then she will buy some time with them. Some fans are willing to sacrifice anyone if it means they get her back.

It kind of reminds me of some of the GH fans are still holding out hopes that Ron C. and Frank V. will undo a lot of the deaths that occurred over the last few years under Guza and Phelps. I can say I am not one of those. I am so tired of return from the dead stories. It is such a tired cliche. I can deal with cheating spouses and many other of the soap cliches, but to me return from the dead ranks up there with dead babies and baby switches. They are just so overdone now.

On the baby switches, I don’t really remember one all that much on GH but just from this one currently going on I want nothing to do with them again. This has been the boringest story I have ever seen. As bad as hate more OLTL/new characters on the show, maybe it would have been better if we had actually seen the baby that was switched. It has been so long ago and the baby is hardly mentioned that it looks like the characters have forgotten the baby and so has the audience. How are you supposed to care about a baby you don’t even see when even the parents seem to have moved on.

Richard/other…I don’t know if Y&R fans ‘welcoming’ Jill Farren Phelps with ‘open arms’ because ‘they are so tired of what they have they will take anything’ is really an accurate statement. Keep in mind that there were complaints at ABC of Brian Frons ‘interfering’ with the network’s soaps. Perhaps Phelps was getting her marching orders from Frons instead of putting her own stamp on GH. Phelps has a long resume – both before and after her stint on GH – and a more accurate picture of her producing style would emerge if one looks at her entire body of work instead of one stint.

For most of her time at GH, Phelps was joined by both Bob Guza and Brian Frons. According to Wikipedia, Phelps arrived at GH in January 2001. Bob Guza was brought on as head writer in June 2002 (Guza had an earlier tenure as head writer from 1997-2000). Brian Frons joined ABC Daytime in August 2002 after stints at both CBS Daytime (1978-83) and NBC Daytime (1983-1991). For those who say that Frons has an ego, he did do a one episode guest spot as God – yes, God! – on an episode of “Santa Barbara” in 1989.

This bit of info is really neither here nor there, but it will likely impact the ratings for the network daytime talk shows.

Next week (Aug. 27), the only daytime network talk show that will air new episodes is “Good Afternoon America”. “The Chew” will join “The Talk” and “The View” in reruns.

  • Richard

Jay, I have read many things on her through the years. I think the only tenure on any show that she had where fans were overwhelming in favor of her was on GL. Pretty much all fans hated her runs at Another World and One Life To Live.

On each show she has a record of getting rid of beloved characters and the fans of Another World and Guiding Light both hate how she got rid of their favorites.

Also it is pretty much from those fans and the industry that there is something called a Friend of Jill or FOJ for short. Those folks usually follow her from show to show. They come among the cast and crew and help her to maintain law and order on her shows. I guess they feed her info if someone is gossiping about her and so forth.

The only member of the production that has left since FV took over has followed Jill Phelps as producer since her Guiding Light days — so everyone is sure that now she will be hired at Y&R. Certain actors like Robin Christopher are FOJ’s too.

She has developed a clear pattern in the shows she has been at. But as I said before she got help with many things at GH from Frons and Guza. They were definitely 3 of a kind. She and Frons both hated women over 40. He said no one wanted to watch women over 40 period. She said no one wanted to see a couple who both over 40 kiss.

When Bobbie was involved with Roy DiLucca when he was played by A Martinez. They were supposed to share an onscreen kiss. This was before Guza or Frons arrived. She put a dead halt to the kiss. They could be a couple but there was to be no intimacy at all. That is when she said no one wanted to a couple their age kiss.

WOW!!This is what I say everytime Days goes for commercial break. Excellent. Fast paced and suspenseful. It reminds me of a nighttime drama. It is worthy of a spot on the primetime schedule. What they are doning now should be done all the time. I just can not wait to see today’s episode.

Hi Chrisann, I don’t know why I now find John McBain so unlikeable, but I think it has to do with finally getting my Jolie HEA on OLTL and now he is constantly sniffing around Sam. I always found John kind of boring when he wasn’t with Natalie, but loved their relationship. She was one of my favorite OLTL characters from the day she came to town, which is rare. I usually dislike newbies until they grow on me. Melissa Archer looks a lot like my oldest daughter, even some of the facial expressions she makes. I think that is why I liked her so much.(My name is Melissa too, but I don’t think that is the reason)If he had a purpose that made sense in Port Charles other than Sam, maybe it wouldn’t bother me so much. I like the actor, Michael Easton just fine, I guess I just miss OLTL, but I am loving GH. I think it is bothering me because McBain was on OLTL for I think about 8 years, and while he had other women his character was pretty loyal and you knew Natalie was his endgame. The writing on GH has changed the character and I wish they brought Easton over as another character, because now they are destroying Natalie in abstentia. Although, I realize Natalie was no saint and was usually the one who screwed things up in their relationship, she really grew as a character in the end. The three of them made such a cute family. The baby who played Liam was adorable.

The funny thing is I am a big Todd & Blair fan. They were my favorite characters and couple on OLTL, but seeing Todd crushing on Carly isn’t bothering me. I’m finding it kind of sweet, in the twisted Todd sense. But I think it is because Todd’s other storylines on GH are so great, it’s not just about him constantly running into Carly. Also, they really haven’t changed Todd as a character much, which I am happy about.

I am excited to find out what the “big news” will be on today’s GH. Lots of speculation and buzz, which is great for GH.

I don’t understand why the soaps would hire a supposedly “failed” EP to head up another show? For instance, GL went literally to ratings and quality and story hell under the leadership of Ellen Wheeler. Do you think if I owned a show I would hire her now in the same position? I wouldn’t want her even if she were free. I don’t really know what Phelps track record is but from what I’ve read here not so great. Why has Y&R snatched her up then? Is her salary going to be strikingly lower than Bell’s was? Has she promised CBS the impossible and they’ve bought it hook, line, and sinker? Isn’t there a pool of new blood out there by now that can take over daytime today and move it forward instead of shuffling the same “tired” people around from show to show with zero results. I guess I don’t understand television.

  • MBmomof3

TimsDale4ever, you are preaching to the choir! I’ve never understood the concept of soaps recycling failed EP’s, writers, etc. I wonder if this happens in other genres, because I agree with you; If I owned a business why would I hire a person with a terrible track record to manage it? I hope for Y&R’s sake she is able to turn it around, but history tells us otherwise. I hope she proves the naysayers wrong and the show returns to its former glory. It really was a great show and has a very talented cast.

  • TimsDale4ever

We need to be careful when looking at this figures from week to week. I noticed on this week it shows Y&R is 203,000 BETTER than this time last year which INSTANTLY sruck me as odd because I kept thinking they’ve been worse about this same amount week end and week out now for a long time which made me think, dang, that’s a 400,000 turn around in a week which seems pretty impossible. When I pulled up the ratings a year ago the show had 4,514,000 viewers, so that makes THIS week 203,000 WORSE (not better) than this time last year. Wonder what else is wrong? Scary.

  • TimsDale4ever

Thrilled for GH’s and DAYS’ surges, although GH’s GREAT increase in total viewers did not reflect in that PRECIOUS 18-49 category. Ughhhh…….. We just can’t win — and I don’t even watch these 2 shows — but It shows I’m rooting for them none the less.

  • Charlie Sheen

I’m watching DAYS right now and its still really good I like the twist with bringing Nick back into Melanie’s life.

  • Charlie Sheen

    @ TimsDale4ever

I’m glad you brought that up with Y&R b/c I actually overlooked that. I usually always check the year-to-year gains and losses but didn’t this week for some odd reason. That’s kind of amazing that every soap except GH was up year-to-year. GH doesn’t have the OLTL lead-in or it would’ve stayed even or gone up.

Good to see you rooting for all of the soaps too, the genre needs that kind of support.

  • MBmomof3

@Charlie Sheen, I’ve been looking forward to Nick’s return. I think DOOL has been really good since it returned from the Olympics break.

  • Jeff

GO GH! That was a freakin’ surprise! HOLY blast from the past. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.
