The word ‘flop’ can be relative. A high rated series on NBC could be considered a ‘flop’ getting the same ratings on CBS, for example. However, I would apply the label of ‘flop’ to “American Horror Story”. AHS had a cumulative viewer total of over 5 million viewers for its premiere episode…the highest rated premiere in the history of FX. The season finale was watched by 3.22 million viewers, slightly better than the 3.18 million who watched the first episode live in its first airing. AHS also tied with TNT’s “Falling Skies” as the most popular cable series of the year in the valued 18-49 year old demographic.

Not only was AHS renewed by FX for a second season of 13 episodes, but if the ratings warrant, that 13 episode order could be extended. I’ll let others judge whether or not all of these facts point to a ‘flop’ label.

Jay, It also was highly praised by critics and with awards and nominations during awards season.

I had heard that one of the networks passed on it — not sure which one it was. But one of them also passed on The Walking Dead.

Which kind of worked out in both series favor as they had more leadway for their stories and things on cable.

  • Richard

Jay here are some numbers and additional info on the ratings from Wikipedia:

The pilot episode gained a 1.6 ratings share among adults aged 18–49 and garnered 3.2 million viewers, and totalled 5.2 million between two airings. These were the best numbers FX had ever received for a series premiere. Taken together with equally strong numbers for the station’s returning original series – Sons of Anarchy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League – the episode helped make October the most-watched month on FX ever. The episode was seen by 3.2 million viewers total in 59 countries.

Ratings increased as the season progressed, with the fourth episode receiving a 1.7 ratings share among adults 18-49, a tenth of a point higher than the pilot episode. The seventh episode had a viewership of 3.06 million, receiving a 1.8 ratings share in the 18-49 demographic; a series high. The season finale was watched by 3.22 million viewers and received a 1.7 ratings share in the 18-49 demographic. The first season tied with the TNT series Falling Skies as the biggest new cable series of the year among adults 18-49.

I really loved Jessica Lange in this but all the cast was really good. I loved that it had a serialized element to it. I know that Season 2 is supposed to be different than the first, but I am still looking forward to seeing it.

Wow. Back to the daytime soaps.

Just saw where Michael Logan at TV Guide broke the news that Steve Burton is leaving GH. He will last air in late October or early November.

Wonder what impact this will have on the ratings. If any.

  • JayTN

Correction to my above post about “American Horror Story”. I meant to say that I would NOT apply the label of ‘flop’ to the series.

  • David

Steve Burton leaving may have some impact on the ratings, but I would think some of the people who complain that the show has too much Jason will be happy.

Personally not thrilled by it but I would imagine money was a factor. Considering money spent on returns, hopefully it all works out and will now give other stories for the show to focus on.

I wonder now if this pushes them to continue the Sam with Mcbain storyline. And how does this effect Sam getting her baby back and the revelation that the baby is actually Jason’s

Will be interesting to see but so much good going on, may not have that huge of an effect

  • Jeff

I am glad Steve is leaving GH. It will free up a lot of airtime for other characters and a lot of money in the budget. My wrap-up wish is that he is reunited with his baby and Sam, and then he goes to save Robin, and he is presumed dead while she reunites with Patrick, and they ride off into the sunset, leaving more air time and more budget with Jason Thompson gone, then the bring over Natalie to have a hot triangle with Sam and John.

  • David

Jeff no Natalie as much as I enjoy Frank and Ron’s work on GH, we have Todd, Starr, and Mcbain. No need to add more OLTL characters. The show is General Hospital not One Life To Live. I think Frank and Ron have done an awesome job with the show but enough of those characters. Unless you are going to be able to sign someone huge like Erika Slezak who played Vicki or Robert S. Woods who played Bo, then we have enough. While I think people complaining about Todd and Mcbain and Starr, I think those complaints are unwarranted, but adding any more OLTL characters will make those complaints very valid!

  • MBmomof3

JayTN, I agree with you on two points: 1) “Flop” is definitely a relative term, especially in cable v. network or daytime v. primetime ratings. And 2)Soaps are definitely a team effort. While I am skeptical about JFP and her ability to turn Y&R around, her past successes and failures were not her doing alone. That said, the buck stops somewhere. However, beyond the complexities of production, writing, direction, casting, egos, and tight budgets, you have network politics thrown into the mix. Oh and add fans, ratings & revenue. Quite the challenge and I hope she is up to the task.

I do think perhaps she and Josh Griffith make a good team. She has consistently worked in this industry for a very long time, just won an Emmy (for whatever that is worth these days) and “Hollywood Heights” seems to have done okay in its first season from what I’ve read. I guess I am just a jaded soap fan and am going to take a wait and see approach, but will hope for the best.

  • MBmomof3

Jeff, I love your storyline idea for the Steve Burton exit & fallout. I am fairly Jason neutral, but would not want to necessarily see him killed off in case he wants to come back at some point in the future. I’m sure he has his fans who will be sorry to see him go. Also, I would love to see a John/Sam/Natalie triangle. It is my only hope to find that storyline remotely interesting. Though I realize I may be in the minority.

I personally like the OLTL crossovers. While I recognize a certain segment of GH fans don’t, I like that Blair pops in and then leaves. Would I like her to stay? Yes, but it is not necessary for me to enjoy the character or storyline. Sometimes less is more. I think that is the problem viewers have with the Sonny, Jason & Carly characters is that they received waaaaaay too much airtime for far too long. I personally like all three characters and the actors, but only in measured doses.

  • Richard

I am just wondering what is going to happen with the Jason/Sam and Jason/Elizabeth contingent. For so many years now the GH fans have been so divided and vocal about those 2 pairings. And the writers and producers have done everything they can to keep giving both sides a shred of hope that their couple will be the end couple. And played both the fan bases against one another.

In one fell swoop with Burton gone — that rivalry is gone.

  • MBmomof3

Wow Richard, no kidding. I know you won’t want to hear this and will disagree, but that is exactly why GH needs Natalie. She is a character that fans seem to love or hate. I can only imagine the Jolie v. McBam war that would ensue! Bring it on!

  • David

@MB I don’t mind the occaional pop in by Blair or Tea or the fact that we have Todd, Starr, and Mcbain. I just don’t think bringing natalie on contract is a good idea. There is enough OLTL on GH now so would rather see the money spent on bringing back a GH character from the past then spent on another OLTL person being added to the show.

I do agree during the 2000’s the show was far too much SOnny/Carly/Jason especially during the Guza era. Now we don’t see them as much and it has been a good mix. The show without Burton could cause some to tune out especially in the key demo where he is far more popular. Hopefully they can keep the show interesting enough without him, although I do think a void will be there without him, after being such a key part of the show!

  • Brad

I wouldn’t mind them recasting Jason. Steve Burton’s acting has become so dry. For years now he hasn’t give his heart to his performances. He checked out of GH years ago IMO. Also, in my area they are airing “Anderson Live!” September 10th at 3pm. Is it just a rename or is Anderson Cooper’s show really going live? I don’t know how they would do that considering it’s syndicated.

Now on to Katie. I was driving through the area where my affiliate is and there was a big billboard on the interstate that was advertising Katie! I nearly died! lol. Btw I read who her guests for the first few weeks are going to be….nothing that interests me or entices me to tune in. She is bringing on guests for stories we’ve been hearing about for MONTHS! Jennifer Lopez, Sheryl Crow’s brain tumor. If she wants to have an audience at all then she needs to do interviews that everyone is burning to hear and by that I mean stories that haven’t been blasted all over the news. For someone who wants to be such a successor to Oprah, she sure isn’t doing things Oprah would do. BTW, My affiliate is airing Katie at 4pm, NOT ABC’s reccomended 3pm slot.. lol. I thought that was funny.

On another note, GH & DAYS have been great. I hope they bring back Alan & Emily!!! Also, I’m looking forward to the Duke story. FV & RC amaze me, because unlike DAYS and Y&R they manage to keep their returns, stories and suprises Under wraps and not blasted out to the audience.

  • Richard

Mom, You might be right. Since I don’t like Easton at all and really don’t like Sam, I personally have no thoughts on them. I have seen pictures of Natalie and saw the one they showed on GH. And she is a pretty girl.

But Easton is like Geary for me and both characters just suck so bad, I just can’t see why any woman would want them at all.

Now the triangle I could have gotten really behind is if all these months Anna had grown close to Robert and then Duke returned. That to me would be an exciting triangle. Her with Luke and now Duke back in the picture — I would root for anyone over Luke. I hate Luke and Anna together so much. I would love to see Tracy take off with Joe and Anna run to Duke and just leave Luke and his skanky self all alone — which is what he deserves.

By the way this is sickening but SoapZone has given Luke and Anna the official couple name of AnaL. I hate this couple names but that has got to be the worst of them.

  • Richard

Brad, Katie will officially be getting my viewrship for one day. That is the day that Barbra Streisand is on. I love her and she does TV interviews so rarely. She is one of my wife and I’s favorite singers.

Not sure if I will tune in for any other, but she does have some of the bigger names lined up for the first few weeks. Not sure if it will be enough.

  • MBmomof3

OMG! AnaL…Yuck. No thanks, I think I’ll go with LuNa (I made that up, we’ll see if it sticks).

I don’t think GH fans would be too happy to lose Jason and gain Natalie, for the most part. I’ve often thought it would be interesting to see them bring on Ted King and explain how Alcazar became Tomas (Blair’s fiancee and Tea’s brother from OLTL).

For the record, I really don’t think it is in GH’s best interest to bring on more contract characters, OLTL or otherwise, unless it is a really good return related to GH, such as Robert or Alan. Even then, I could see the value of recurring or short-term contracts as opposed to expensive long-term agreements and their value to the show.

  • Richard

Mom, With Jason leaving I am not even sure I would see the real use of resurrecting Alan. If they put him back on contract they would almost have to put Charleson back on contract too. With Jason gone and all the other kids gone they really wouldn’t have any one to interact with as far as family. Edward is hardly ever seen and a fight between Tracy and Alan over ELQ wouldn’t be much without either one of their children around.

Ever since I heard about the rumor with Alan and now with Jason leaving, I just don’t see the point.

  • MBmomof3

Good point Richard. As much as I love Alan, he really wouldn’t have many storyline opportunities. But I do love Alan, Tracy, Monica & Edward scenes and pretty much anyone Q related. Frankly Bobbie probably has more family left on the canvas, and it doesn’t sound like we will see her anytime soon. And she’s still alive!

  • Stacy

Well today when i read the news that Steve Burton is leaving gh my choice between days and gh that i was going to have to make on Sept 10 was made for me. I will be watching days and not gh as of Sept 10. I liked Steve Burton and just can’t see gh being the same without him. I know not everybody liked Steve but he was a fan favorite from what i read. I guess now we will have to wait and see what happens with gh ratings. IMO gh ratings will drop. I’m afraid that gh will be cancelled next year. I also hate how the Q family is pretty much gone on gh.
