KSL, the Salt Lake City NBC affiliate owned by the Mormon church, is opting not to air NBC's new comedy The New Normal. The show's premise involves a gay couple who hires a single mother to be to be their surrogate. The station deemed the show, "inappropriate on several dimensions", presumably referring to the show's gay relationship and politically incorrect dialogue. KSL also chooses not to air Saturday Night Live. Last season, it refused to broadcast The Playboy Club. Another Salt Lake City station, KUCW, will air The New Normal on the weekend.

Why hasn’t NBC yanked their affiliation away yet?

  • Samuel

Good for them! I hope my local network does the same.

  • Lisa

They obviously have some really closed-minded, negative people running that affiliate. What a shame.

  • Joltman

@Samuel, I hope you are joking. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch, don’t prevent others from watching it. I hate when religion affects people that aren’t part of that religion.

  • Julia

Did they air Will & Grace? Or is it only a problem if you call it normal?

  • joel

Great publicity for The New Normal. From the previews I had written it off as an early cancellation dog. Now I’ll have to check it out.

  • Susan

@Samuel, I couldn’t agree with you more. Another trashy show from NBC.

THANK GOD I LIVE IN CANADA . WE HAVE NO CENSORSHIP .I ALWAYS THOUGHT AMERICA WAS FREE TOO. MAYBE THE PEOPLE OF UTAH SHOULD MOVE TO CHINA OR CRAZY RUSSIA.

  • peter

Lol. Nbc should lose those affliates

  • Mike

    Lucky for not airing SNL.

  • Shabbir

They own the station and they have a right of what they want to air for
    their audience.

NBC.com will no doubt offer the episodes online and episodes recaps will be available on many websites including E weekly.

And of course there are always other ways of watching the episodes. So fear not, citizens of Utah, those who want to see The NewNormal, will be able to.

Dear friendly neighbor to the North,

Like many Americans, you are confused about what the “Freedom of Speech” guarantee in our constitution prevents. (likely also whatever rights you have, but I’m no expert on what the Queen & your government allows you folks to do)

It stops OUR GOVERNMENT from inhibiting free speech. It has nothing to do with private entities from doing whatever they want, like an NBC affiliate in Utah.

For example, we’re certainly within our rights to prevent all commenting from people above the 49th parallel if we wished. But since most of you are so polite, we’d never think of doing that ;)

Samuel and Susan… welcome to the year 2012!

  • EatMorePez

Just out of curiosity does anybody know if that NBC affiliate in Salt Lake shows commercials for alcoholic and caffeinated beverages? (Those products are prohibited by the Mormon church in case you didn’t know.)

  • Chris1791

It’s about time they start standing up against the gay agenda and say NO you aren’t normal. And you will never be NORMAL.

  • Chris1791

Bill Gorman you are clueless. Canada censors everything. You won’t even allow talk radio in Canada. Since you are Canadian and this is a uniquely American issue we don’t care what you think.

  • Chris1791

Sorry Bill Gorman you were replying to some Canadian idiot.

I wonder how long this show will last. The Playboy CLub only aired for three weeks. and KSL put a local life style show in its place that only got a .5 in the ratings in Sualt Lake City. I hope the New Normal does good for NBC and I hope people still watch it in Utah on the station that will show it.

  • True Facts

Good I hope that helps New Normal lead to a cancellation too because that show sucks.

I hope the Utah Affiliate gets some new people in there because that affiliate is too conservative to be running a major network. If they want to run a network like that then they should open up their own network.

  • Oliver

I suspect the Utah affiliate just realises that baby/pregnancy plotlines in sitcoms are never funny. They learned their lesson after being burnt by Up All Night.

Now if they stop airing Whitney then they really have my respect.
