HOLY COWWWWW! Did anyone see the new GH promo from ABC?! Take a look! It looks soooooo good! It’s like primetime! This promo is from Entertainment Tonight

  • Richard

Days made it in the 2?s for each daily rating. That is the first time in a long time they were able to accomplish that. Last year for the same week they hit a 1.6 for the Friday rating. Definitely doing better this year.

Y&R’s rating up form last year is right this time. Y&R last year had 4,413,000 viewers which was a new low for them at the time. They also set a new low last year in the 18-49 for the same week.

GH lost 17,000 in the key 18-49 demo. They are slowly losing all in the 18-49 they had gained back during the Olympics.

B&B is the one that still surprises me. No big online presence. No magazines giving them preferential treatment. No online website or proclaimed journalist proclaiming the show the 2nd coming or it’s creators the 2nd coming. No stunts. No big explosions. No big returns. No couples being proclaimed as the reason the ratings are up. Yet it is the most consistent performer in the ratings. STill up from last year and still rising. They don’t even get the front cover of Soap Opera Digest hardly ever. They just amaze me.

Next weeks ratings should be interesting as you have some areas that the shows were preempted due to the hurricane and also there was another shooting in one area. Wonder if the preemptions will effect the ratings.

  • Zac

People need to get back on the GH train now. It has been yet another excellent week, and as Brad posted: LOOK AT THAT PROMO! It’s always good to have Jerry back.

  • Richard

Zac, I don’t think no matter what happens many won’t ever return to GH. The bad run of Guza/Phelps drove a lot away. And then bringing over the OLTL characters like they did drove a lot of GH’s hard core audience away and they won’t ever return either.

People can say it is not an invasion or that GH fans shouldn’t get mad but no matter what GH fans felt betrayed by that and Ron C. and Frank V. have done nothing to make them feel any different.

When you look at the new yearly episode counts that were just posted at SON, the 3 OLTL characters are already in the Top 20 — being the number of people with the most episodes. And they have only been on since basically March.

This is what people were complaining about last year under Wolfe about all the new characters and now you have all these new characters — and yes they are new to many GH fans — and you have them being front and center over GH characters that were already neglected under Guza/Phelps. The number one complaint about fans is the way so much of Patrick’s grief was handled off the show. Already all 3 OLTL characters are about to have more episodes for the year than Patrick.

Add to that another new character Ewin who most GH fans didn’t like even before Ron C. arrived but he had the most episodes for August.

Guza made the mistake of featuring the wrong characters all the time — mostly that being Sonny, Jason, and Carly. Ron C. has tried to fix that but he is still featuring the wrong characters way too much and most of them being new characters to the GH audience.

And it is driving the key demo away. Ron C. and Frank V. have lost more of the key demo than they have any. And the only demo they pick up mostly is men. And with soaps that doesn’t pay the bills.

Like Ron C. or Frank V. or not, what they are doing overall is just not working to draw viewers in. I mean they thought by bringing in OLTL characters that all those OLTL fans would run to the show. Well they haven’t and more GH fans esp. the 18-49 ones have left.

So call me a hater if you want and I know some will, but they have been there over 6 months now and where is the big influx in ratings that all of the naysayers said were coming. When some of us got angry and said it wouldn’t work we were promised that this would bring in the viewers. Where are they at?

  • diana

Sorry, but that promo does nothing for women like me, who are SICK of Sonny being front-and-center, sick of the MOBSTERS being the main characters, and sick of NO ROMANCE, NO LOVE STORIES! I am trying to watch GH to support the genre, but it is just so hard to sit through. I find the whole Corinthos clan terribly boring, Luke&Anna (AnaL) is just WRONG, I want Robert Scorpio back! Although it’s cool that Duke is back, Luke is NOT the person who should be in this storyline, trying to find Robin with Anna. The one bright spot for me is Jax returning. Absolutely adore that man. Maybe he can make up for the loss of Jason, I don’t know. I do know the way they’ve gone about breaking up Jason&Sam, John&Natalie, just to push a contrived John&Sam pairing, has been clumsily executed and alienated a whole bunch of fans, including me.

WOW! Look at DAYS the whole week. So Impressive! This might be the week that gives them their next renewal next year.

Y&R and B&B might’ve had had their best week of the entire summer.

GH held pretty steady, not a negative week for them at all.

  • JNewt

    @ Richard

B&B is pretty big online internationally and you’re right its probably the most surprising of the soaps due to the fact that its been the most steady soap performer dating back to last summer. It has kept these same numbers almost since then. They pretty much have the same storyline going on for months and months and you’d think it would cause people to lose interest but it looks like Bell has found some sort of formula that works for that show to keep the consistency up. I’m hoping DAYS keeps their audience year to year like B&B has.

  • JNewt

    @ Brad

That looks real big for GH, I had no idea that they were going to do a huge stunt event like that for the new timeslot. It looks real good as I like the outdoor shots.

It’s gonna be interesting as I got GH going up in the ratings with a better lead-in but the DAYS competition in some markets will make things interesting and unpredictable.

  • Matto

GH was actually solid and great in the ratings this week compared to other weeks! And I promise, this coming week they will rise to the 2.5-2.8 area. I bet that by their 2pm slot, they will be doing some occasional 2.0 household ratings. 2.44M average for GH is not bad at all. And GH actually went up also in the Men 18+ viewers a lot too… which is usually an extreme weak category for them.

  • Stacy

Wow great news for days. Here in Texas on Sept 10th both days and gh will be on at the same time. For the last two weeks i have been trying to deicide between days and gh. With the news this week of Steve Burton leaving and days being so gool lately i have decided on days. Since i decided on days i only watched gh a couple times this last week. I am considering watching y&r again. I haven’t watched y&r since i graduated from high school in 1994.

@Richard i don’t think you are a hater. I agree with you on the OLTL stuff. I never watched OLTL before because it came on at the same time as days. I hate how the writers think we all loved OLTL.

I always liked Sonny/Jason/Carley/Sam so i never cared that they were on so much. I can understand how people did get tired of them being on all the time if they really didn’t care for the characters.

  • Richard

@Matto, What ratings are you looking at? GH did better when it was up against the Olympics.

GH is lower now in Total Viewers and 18-49 Viewers than they were at the 1st of February just before Ron C. and Frank V. took over. The only category they are higher in are the 18-34 and Male Viewers. But even those being up still doesn’t make in Total Viewers what they have lost in other categories.

And if you are right that GH hits the 2.5-2.8 area then they will have performed a miracle. GH hasn’t hit those kind of numbers in years.

GH might have held steady in the dailies but being down in every category but 18-34 and Males is not a good thing — no matter how you try to spin it. Esp. when the other soaps are on fire right now in the ratings.

If they can’t beat Days now what is going to happen when GH goes up against Days in many parts of the country when it switches timeslots. I am actually surprised from reading boards about how many places GH and Days will compete with one another.

  • Richard

I am still not convinced that B&B’s international success helps it here in the states. It is just not that big online here at all. And the International viewers can’t help the show here with it’s ratings. It also didn’t help B&B with CBS since even though B&B is doing so well in the ratings they still got a budget cut so big that actors were forced to take pay cuts leading to Ronn Moss quitting. The show just amazes me at how well it has done, yet not even one of the online big wigs like DC or Nelson Branco give it much attention and SOD hardly ever does any coverage of it as they do the other shows.

Thanks. I always enjoy reading your comments. I used to love Sonny/Jason/Carly/Sam alot but did grow weary with them over time because they were on so much. I like lighter doses of them now. And I really loved Jason with Elizabeth but knew the show would never go there permanently.

The thing that made me fall in love with GH years ago was the dramatic stories esp. those that centered around the hospital. The only just plain love story I ever got into was when Holly thought Luke was dead and she slowly fell in love with Robert. I thought Samms and Rogers shared a special chemistry that just blew me away. Watching them fall in love like I said was the only real just love story I got into.

I liked the drama and just the stuff that focused on the characters more than the love stories. And I really liked when they did mysteries or stuff like that. And I loved when they did medical stories like Monica’s cancer or Stone’s fight with AIDS. Or the surgery that gave BJ’s heart to Maxie.

  • WMD

I’m inclined to think that B&B’s success is due to it being a half hour. A big part of why soaps aren’t doing so well these days is the time it takes to watch five shows a week, when people are busier than ever…so being the one show that takes half as long to watch would certainly make it attractive to viewers. I watch it, along with Y&R and GH, and I don’t find it to be any better or worse than the other shows in story/production quality.

  • Richard

Well something isn’t working with GH for some reason. So many make excuses for GH like bad lead in, etc. But even last year when GH had a good lead in that didn’t help the show.

GH at least airs most consistently in the same time slot across the country and has for years.

Days bounces back and forth all throughout the country and effecting has no good lead in anywhere, yet even now that doesn’t stop them from having good ratings. Days has not had a good lead-in for a whole lot longer than GH has.

I am still in the same camp as I have been for several months, GH will decide it’s own fate with ABC, and if they keep losing the key demo viewers they will ultimately make that decision for ABC. And ABC has done it’s part with the promos and the attention it has given the timeslot. Its time now that GH delivers something that is going to make viewers want to tune in. And those key demo viewers want romance and this virus story is not giving them any of that.

  • Williams

I absolutely love The Bold and The Beautiful. I don’t live in the States, I am wtiting from Chile where B&B is telecast everyday on Cosmopolitan TV, but it’s 2 years delayed…… so what i do is watching it online on CBS. I like it because is young and fresh, I love whan they go out to film it, and of course as somebody said, it just takes me half an hour to watch it. I used to watch Y&R but as a young man (still) I don’t feel identified with the storylines, sometimes slow and repetitive, the setting is also boring, I would have liked to see some sunlight ever! These people go everyday at the same place to have a cup of coffee and have lunch everyday at the same place too….and for so long. So…I love B&B.
