Sorry GH promo doesn’t agree with me either .Had me interested in the beginning but to turn to abc anymore just not my cup of tea. I miss my AMC & OLTL I tend to watch cbs now In my opinion GH is good it’s ABC That is the reason I dnt watch…..

  • Richard

Excellent points Jay. And I agree that excuse is the craziest. It is back to last year when they were saying ABC was paying off people to keep the ratings low for AMC and OLTL so they could be cancelled but then it stopped when OLTL’s ratings started going up and made ABC look bad.

As to this thing of GH getting to the area of OLTL ratings, getting to that point will not save GH. Remember last February when the decisions were being made GH was still doing good in the ratings but it was at risk of being cancelled too. ABC wanted it gone then. Those ratings were still higher than what OLTL got most of the year last year after it was cancelled and it was rising.

GH has got to get back to what it was last February and even above if it wants to be totally safe. I can’t imagine that if ABC wasn’t satisfied with those ratings in Feb 2011 that it would be now.

Here were GH’s numbers in February 2011 for the last week of Feb sweeps:

  • Richard

Oh Jay, that last part wasn’t directed toward what you said. I didn’t go back to the page but someone had said that GH would get to the point of OLTL ratings as it needed to.

GH is now down to about the same or lower in some areas than AMC and OLTL were when they got cancelled. Unless Frank V. has made a miraculous turn around in the budget to make up for that loss, then ABC is making less on GH now than it was last year. Plus they got another cut in ad revenue costs last year due to the drop in the ratings.

  • Richard

I was just looking even in its final week OLTL had that big surge to their highest ratings. They didn’t even get to GH’s early 2011 numbers in the 18-49 key demo. They got past them in Total Viewers but not in the key demo. The key demo is what saved GH in 2011 from being cancelled with OLTL and AMC. And that is Ron C. and Frank V.’s weakest numbers now.

  • Chrisann

Sorry that GH went down. It has been very good for the last few months. I understand so many are upset because new characters have come on but that happens with any soap. These new characters just happen to be from a canceled soap. Why that would upset GH fans is beyond me.

Brad thanks for posting the promo….it looks very well done.

Days has been good lately also. I do watch all the soaps when I can but GH is the one I won’t miss. I guess everyone has their own favorites but to keep hoping for one soap to fail over another just doesn’t sit well with me. As a soap fan I would love to see all the soaps rise in the key demos and stick around for a long time. Too many talk and reality shows in daytime and Primetime.(at least for me) So done with shows liked Big Brother, American Idol, Americas Got Talent etc….but those shows seem to do well in the ratings….don’t get it.

  • JR

How much of the action these days on General Hospital actually takes place in the hospital? :)

  • Richard

Chrisann, Why did so many get mad last year when Garin Wolfe and Guza brought on new characters and was featuring them heavily?

Why did so many quit last year? Weren’t you one of them? Why did you quit?

I find it funny that people are so shocked that people are quitting now when people have been complaining about new characters and bad stories last year?

Are folks so blinded by their love for Ron C. and Frank V. and OLTL that it was okay when they didn’t watch GH but now it is not okay?

And all this being thrown out about loyalty? Where was the loyalty when many of you quit? Now just because GH might be cancelled should people not get upset and quit watching just out of loyalty? Why is it disloyal now but it wasn’t then? Is it just because Cartooni are there? Or is it because the OLTL characters are there?

Some of you say GH has changed? Evidently it has to you but it hasn’t to many.

Sorry I just don’t get all this all of a sudden when so many have even admitted that in the past they quit watching GH but now it is a sin if you do. Remember different folks like different things and just because some of you loved OLTL and love Cartooni and their version doesn’t mean that everyone else does. There was a reason that many of us didn’t watch OLTL — WE DIDN’T LIKE IT. And if we didn’t like it then why do you think we want to watch it now on GH. If I didn’t like the characters on OLTL then I am not going to like them on GH.

I still would just love to go back in time and have GH cancelled and them move Guza and Phelps over to OLTL and them bring Michael, Sonny, Jason and Carly over to the show. And don’t try to tell me that OLTL fans would not have been mad. Some maybe but I can assure you it would have been the same thing. As many have pointed out the As The World Turns fans didn’t like when Another World characters moved to their show.

And it might not have been so bad if the OLTL characters were blended in but they weren’t. They immediately were given preferential treatment and on almost everyday. And it really got off on a bad foot when they arrive at the same time a long time GH vet was killed off and her husband wasn’t seen for 9 days but the new characters were on everyday.

    @JayTN

Great post sometimes i think people live in a world where they think them and their friends are the only people that exist.

    @Fans

I agree with you i don’t think adding the OLTL characters to gh helped at all. Not all of us gh fans watched OLTL and we had our reasons why we didn’t so i don’t think the writers should be trying to force us to like the OLTL characters. IMO gh won’t be the same without SB and i think his leaving will hurt the ratings for gh.

Another great week for DAYS! With Nick’s parole hearing next week and Melanie set to leave the show…it’ll be interesting to see how this will play out. The weeks following the Daysaster have been great but now that the ripple effect has started to subside it’ll be interesting to see how DAYS will keep the audience boost they’ve recieved this past month. Eileen Davidson’s return will be EPIC for long time fans and I know Chloe is set to return Jan 2013…would love to see Phillip, Shawn, Belle & Mimi return as well…the show was sooo good when they were all on together.

Looking over the ratings this past week it looks promising that there is a steady amount of viewers each day. DAYS historically has high Mondays and a day mid week but there are 100,000’s of viewers in the difference for the rest of the week. There wasn’t a substantial fluctuation this week which means people are tuning in and want to tune in every day. Go DAYS!

  • Rob R

I want all the soaps to survive, even though I only watch DAYS. But I am afraid that the time slot move for GH, the first such move in its entire history, will be disastrous. 50 percent of the country still does not have DVRs. West of the Mississippi River, GH and DAYS will face each other at 1 pm– a showdown that has NEVER EVER occurred. That can’t be good for a genre struggling to survive. But at least “The Chew” is a slightly better lead-in for GH than the horrific “Revolution” or equally weak “Good Afternoon America.”

  • Stacy

Does anybody know why ABC is moving gh from the timeslot it has been in for years? I have watched days and gh for years and they have always been on at different times and now ABC is moving gh to the same timeslot as days. Now i can only watch one soap. Yes i can dvr one and watch it later but i have never been good at watching a show later, so i won’t do that. I have so many shows on my dvr now that i never took the time to watch. I will be watching days as of Sept 10.

Some were even saying over at SON that DAys and GH will compete in some parts of California as well. They didn’t realize it until this week that it would be happening.

I think just about all of the Chicago area and parts of Northern Illinois as well will have them compete. So it is spread out all over the country.

And I knew that a great deal of people still didn’t have DVR but had not seen any statistics as to how many. Being on a fixed income it is something that we just could no longer afford — so haven’t had one in about 3 years now. I know of many others who don’t, but wasn’t sure how wide spread that trend was.

I know I keep hearing of many even online who say they will have to choose since they don’t have DVR’s or SoapNet.

  • Richard

Stacy, It was part of their deal with the producers of the Katie show. They gave their affiliates the timeslot if they would agree to air Katie in that hour. If Katie fails the affiliates get to keep the time slot.

It is sort of a win for ABC as they will no longer be responsible for that timeslot any longer. If Katie fails then the affiliates will be responsible for scheduling the slot and paying for whatever they air there.

For now the affiliates that air Katie will pay a licensing fee back to ABC World and Disney for the right to air Katie there. Since the timeslot is now theirs.

  • Nick

If you think GH has 3 or 4 years to raise ratings then you are mentally challenged.

  • Anna

@Justin “I know Chloe is set to return Jan 2013…would love to see Phillip, Shawn, Belle & Mimi return as well…the show was sooo good when they were all on together.”

I loved this group also with the original actors. But unfortunately when DOOL brought them back in recent yrs they screwed up the characters. I don’t think they can fix the damage they’ve done.

  • Robert

Days had a great week. The Friday number was very impressive. Don’t watch GH anymore.

  • righton22

At least GH held steady in the ratings “points” for overall and women 18-49 viewers. I am anxious to see the numbers for this past week – we should see a spike in the ratings.

And, I know this does not count as much as the original timeslot airings, but what about online viewing and IPADS and such? I work, and can’t watch the show during the day. It is my understanding (at least anecdotally) that more people are tuning in to the alternative viewing habits.

  • Pinevalleylover

That was still a good week for gh! 2.4 million viewers is better than 2.2 like they were getting a few months ago! I don’t get it i find days really boring i don’t understand why they are getting such good numbers! I am for sure choosing gh over days on sept. 10 i think that promo looks awesome! I do agree with @richard i only like 1 oltl character and thats todd i hate john mcbain and starr is ok. I don’t know if it was such a good idea to bring all the oltl characters over. But i will say im loving gh right now with jerry jacks and ewen kidnapping elizabeth! I hope gh will rise and days will fall! Sorry to all days fans but i am finding the show boring!

Omg! An outdoor filming!! I love it! Valentini is proving what a tremendous exec producer he is! He had turned General Hospital into a daily juggernaut of a show! That was one of the best promos ever!
