(Silver Spring, Md.) –Discovery kept the momentum going for the second week in a row with ‘Do or Die Friday’ lineup of BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE and YUKON MEN, which were the top two programs in cable (excluding sports) for Men 25-54. BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE once again produced big ratings on Friday, August 31 at 9pm ET/PT. BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE was the #1 non-sports program in cable among P/M 25-54 delivery and #2 among M 18-49 delivery. Earning a 1.09 HH / 0.84 P25-54, the one-hour program delivered an average of 1.58 million viewers P2+.

Additionally, freshman series YUKON MEN came in with large numbers on Friday, August 31 at 10pm ET/PT. YUKON MEN was the #2 non-sports program in cable among M25-54. Earning a 1.07 HH/ .076 P25-54, this one-hour program delivered an average of 1.48 million viewers P2+.

BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE follows three gold mining teams run by driven dredge captains whose very livelihoods depend on mining this wet and frozen gold. Split second thinking, extreme focus, and team work are key to staying alive under the ice. The risks are great, and the payoff is even greater.

In new Discovery series YUKON MEN, the residents of Tanana, Alaska are about to face one of the most brutal winters on record. People struggle to find food and heat; battle life-threatening predators just to survive. Boys grow into men quickly here because they must help the family survive. Father-son bonding and tensions take on a new meaning in this environment. The stakes are high in Tanana, and to defy the odds, to survive and to battle the harsh Alaskan wilderness, the residents must overcome obstacles, stick together and prevail.

BERING SEA GOLD: UNDER THE ICE returns this Friday, September 7 at 9pm ET/PT, followed by YUKON MEN at 10pm ET/PT.

At the end of tonight’s show, was it announced that someone passed away?? I
only saw the last second of that portion, but it looked like someone indeed did pass away?? Anyone see for sure?

  • Jess

I saw the end clip which said in loving memory of…
If anybody knows who let us know…

  • Julie

John patrick bunce is the name at the end of the episode 1985-2012

  • Helen

His onlime obituary just says he passed away on September 1’2012 in Anchorage, Alaska. No details.

  • Helen

He was a member of the team on the Clarke.

  • Anastasia

Wow, how sad :( Thanks for the info…Condolences to his family and friends if they read these messages. Gone way too soon, RIP John.

  • shell

    From his aunt’s Facebook page:
“Please pray for my family….we lost our nephew at age 25 from an accidental gunshot Frinday night…he was like a son, he lived in Nome, Alaska and was part ownership of the dredge “The Clark” on Bering Sea Gold..His name is John Bunce. “

  • Jeff Furlong

This is what happens when red necks play with guns. Please ban firearms in the US people are too stupid and irresponsible to own them. It would save so many lives.

  • Red Neck

Jeff, you are a dick. Not the time or place for that!!!!

  • Terry

@ Jeff Furlong how are they rednecks in Alaska you retard, and you will never stop guns in America its to big, rednecks you idiot

  • Nick

Jeff…you are the idiot in this situation, somebody has lost a brother, son, father, uncle, best friend or all of the above. And you have no idea what the circumstances were. Yet you spew off some hateful, political BS about someone that just died because of an accident. You should be ashamed of yourself, and besides IF GUNS ARE OUTLAWED ONLY OUTLAWS WILL HAVE GUNS!!

  • Shootist

No nothing twit. First, you refer to a man, dead before his time, by an hateful epitaph, then you tar gun ownership as something undesirable. More live are saved by private gun owners than by sworn police officers. Accidents happen. Should we ban automobiles, as well? Your ignorance is astounding.

  • Nick

Exactly, that’s what I’m talking about..What an idiot he is…O yeah if we ban guns they are all gonna dissapear like a fart in the wind….That worked real good when the Government banned Marijuana and made it illegal ….can’t find that anywhere!!!!

  • Edward Deltufo

WOW! What a stupid comment , never mind the timing. Unfortunately, Alaska has the highest suicide rate in our Country. and this seems like what may have happened. God bless this young man and his family. Next time…maybe use whatever brain cells you have left, Jeff !

  • Brenda Snider

It said he was accidently shot in Austrailia on September 01,2012 and was laid to rest in Austrailia.

  • Patti

Jeff when reading your post I noticed it was almost 3am, perhaps you were sleep deprived or drunk. I am trying to find an excuse for such garbage. If neither are the case then the saying ” It is better to be thought an idiot then to open your mouth and remove all doubt!” fits you.

  • Katy

Patti, I think the one in Australia was not the same person this one was like 69,

  • Katy

Sorry the post should have been to Brenda not patti – my bad

  • Shawn

Jeff, Jeff, Jeff… I know very little about John Bunce, save 1 thing. His friend called him on the phone and said he needed his help. John showed up ready to lend a hand. Your insight about firearms is pure ignorance. I hope that someday you are in need of somebody with a firearm. If you were my neighbor, I would post a sign in my yard that would read, “I own several firearms and know how to use all of them at an expert level. My neighbor does not agree with my hobby, so feel free to rob him. I will respect his wishes and not use my firearms to protect his property, or protect his life. Because he thinks it should be illegal to own a firearm.” Good luck with your life Jeff. I’m sure that you are a well liked person. Well,by other idiots…
