    Well, MTV self-inflicted this – nobody forced them to air awards at Thursday.

    More than 50% down in MTV key demo 12-34 too:
    2012 = 5.3 P12-34
    2011 = 10.8 P12-34
    y2y -51%

    @Bill

    Wouldn’t these ratings be of Thursday, 6th Semptember, 2012? ;)

    @Bill,

    The Big Bang Theory tied in demo 18-49 (5.5 as I recall) with Modern Family last season but even in summer reruns Modern Family can’t get those ratings.Why Modern Family is the N#1 scripted show if TBBT has more viewers than MF even the both tied in demo?

  • Nick

    @Douglas from Brazil

    Modern Family season 3 A18-49 average (L+SD): 5.04
    TBBT season 5 A18-49 average (L+SD): 4.97

    I believe what you have is L+7 numbers.

    Anyway, TBBT gets much better repeat ratings because you don’t have to pay attention. Punch lines are given throughout the entire episode, so you don’t have to watch the entire thing to get it. Modern Family takes a more traditional route. A joke could be set up in the beginning, when the punch line is at the end. It’s hard to keep track of if you’re not an avid watcher, and there aren’t many of those for repeats.

    @Nick,

    Thanks for explain.I didn’t consider the others numbers.But I have to agree with you about comedies comparison lines.TBBT is much easier to follow than Modern Family even me as a avid watcher cause I do pay attention in jokes,lines.

    Good to see Rookie Blue up in viewership.

    NBC won’t see these numbers on a Thursday after next Thursday for a very long time.

    @Nick

    When I calculate the season average of a show, I include all new episodes at the regular time (including the episode on the day before Thanksgiving). Modern Family had 24 new episodes for the 2011-2012 season. Two of them were shown at the beginning of the season (9 and 9:30 pm). My season average is based on 23 episodes. My season average for Modern Family was

    115.1/23 = 5.00, not 5.04

    Why did NBC get to air two hours? Every night of both conventions has been one hour. Seems a bit unfair.

  • Networkman

    @RJ, because NBC didn’t show the DNC on Wednesday night due to Football

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

    @RJ: also, it’s not really true that every night was one hour, just that the main speeches began at 10pm. And the “it’s unfair” comment is pretty funny. It’s a safe assumption is that the broadcast networks all air the *minimum* amount of coverage they possibly can. ABC & CBS *could* have devoted more coverage on Thursday night if they wanted to. They didn’t!

    2.2 for NBC airing over two hours of the convention is very good. It built from its lead-in… clearly there is some demand to see this. Did ABC and CBS miss a trick here Robert?

    Thanksgiving isn’t that far away… ;)
