Update: 'The Voice' premiered to a preliminary (Fast National ratings) 4.1 adults 18-49 and 'The New Normal' premiered to a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating.

The official start of the new season is still a couple of weeks away, but some shows are premiering in those two weeks, including tonight's premieres of The Voice and The New Normal (and for sports fans, a Monday Night Football doubleheader).

The Voice's third season, it's first in the fall, isn't going to premiere nearly as well as its second season did, but the second season had the benefit of the lead-in being a record breaking Super Bowl which averaged more than 111 million viewers. As a result The Voice's second season premiered to 37.6 million viewers and a 16.3 adults 18-49 rating. With that momentum, the Monday premiere the next night averaged a 6.7 adults 18-49 rating.  I don't see much (any) chance of that happening tonight, and while it is traditional to compare premieres to premieres and finales to finales, the better barometer here is probably to compare the premiere with last spring's finale. The final performance show averaged a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating and the results finale drew a 4.4 adults 18-49 rating.

My guess is NBC will be thrilled with anything near a 4.0 adults 18-49 rating and won't be biting its fingernails unless it debuts below a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating.

Whatever The Voice does it's reasonable to conclude The New Normal will be lower, most likely considerably.

@Jon23812 id be amazed if the x factor did anywhere near that look at its first season ratings. There’s no way it does anywhere near a 6 demi/britney arent going to add like a 3.0 to it.

I say the voice doesnt around a 4.7 which NBC will be thrilled with. New normal around a 2.0

Let’s not forget Monday Night Football is extra competition on the cable side of things.

It seems like the talent/singing genre has shown some real fatigue lately and I think The Voice might really premiere a little bit lower than its expect to. The Voice will still do well for them but could potentially get lost in the shuffle when all of the other fall shows run in a couple of weeks.

The New Normal is just another waste of a huge lead-in. I’ll give NBC credit for trying but this show is dead.

^^^^ meant to say the voice does around a 4.7 which NBC will be thrilled with

“Is The New Normal a brand new episode?..or just a repeat of the pilot?”

It’s the pilot which never aired on TV. It may be online.

    @ steve

There seems to be more buzz around The X Factor this year than The Voice. Buzz doesn’t equal ratings but it can help. I actually think X Factor could have a huge night on Wednesday there will be major curiosity to see how Britney Spears judges and a 20 year old in Demi Lovato judges grown ass people.

The Voice airing on a third night will tire out its viewers so there’s no way people are going to actually watch The Voice over X Factor. There will be a lot of channel switching I would have to think.

  • Migrane

I’ve been looking forward to the X Factor all year I’m much more excited to see that over The Voice. As a matter of fact I might actually watch Monday Night Football most of the way instead of The Voice.

  • Carlos

I think The Voice will perform just like it did on the first season. And on Wednesday, of course X Factor will win the night AND time periods. I think many people want to watch a singer who doesn’t sing live judging people actually singing. And I also think Demi won’t be a huge factor for the ratings, since her fans are mostly 14-16 teenagers.

3.5-3.7 for The Voice, 2.1-2.4 for The New Normal.

Yeah, I’ll also be watching the finale of Hell’s Kitchen. Both Ramsay shows are likely to hit 3+ ratings and come close to matching or beating The Voice. I don’t quite understand why NBC is premiering it tonight…

  • AniMatsuri

We just had a season of The Voice earlier in the spring, I don’t think there’s a big demand for it so soon. Plus, 2 seasons in and the show hasn’t produced any chart topping artists. Heck I think the season one winner has already been dropped from the label. I would not be surprised if the show gets no more than a 3.2-3.4 rating.

As for the New Normal, it’ll be interesting to see if homofatigue starts to set in with viewers constantly being bombarded with TV’s need to push the limits and shock the middle class.

Nothing against the Voice , but it is up against Monday Night Football, and the final episodes of Masterchef and Hell’s Kitchen.

I don’t think some of you understand how much of an audience Britney Spears will bring to this show. She appeared on How I Met Your Mother in 2008 and the ratings almost doubled!

That’s not accurate. While she did propel the show to a then series high 4.5, it was only up two tenths from the previous week. After the writer’s strike, HIMYM moved to 8:30, behind The Big Bang Theory, and saw an initial ratings boost of ~33% before the usual April/May declines.

NBC will be airing tomorrow the second episode of Go On, right? Or will be another repeat of the pilot? The same with The New Normal.

Is The New Normal a brand new episode?..or just a repeat of the pilot?

Monday @ 10p – New Normal pilot, Go On pilot (R)

    Tuesday @ 9p – Go On #2, New Normal #2

Wednesday @ 10p – Guys With Kids pilot, New Normal pilot (R)

    Friday @ 8p – Guys With Kids pilot (R), Go On #2 (R)

AFAIK, All of the pilots are/were available online.

Are people underestimating because it’s NBC? C’mon, someone predicted a 2.9! Yeah right!

  • Mark

I have no interest in the New Normal. Imo they saw a gay couple on a successful show in Modern Family and said hey lets make a show out of that.

  • glover

    @Ultima thanks.
I’m happy I don’t have to wait one more week for the second episode of Go On.

  • taylor

voice will drop big from last season

    ~3.8-4.0 or so

    new normal 2.5 ish

Hey, give them credit, they were at least trying to be different by looking at another network’s shows – they came up with the other new pilots after they saw a couple of old Friends episodes in syndication!

Ross’ monkey – boom! Animal Practice. Joey & Chandler with Ross’ kid – boom! Guys With Kids. Any of those Friends looking for a job? – boom! Go On.

  • ron
