Update: 'The Voice' premiered to a preliminary (Fast National ratings) 4.1 adults 18-49 and 'The New Normal' premiered to a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating.

The official start of the new season is still a couple of weeks away, but some shows are premiering in those two weeks, including tonight's premieres of The Voice and The New Normal (and for sports fans, a Monday Night Football doubleheader).

The Voice's third season, it's first in the fall, isn't going to premiere nearly as well as its second season did, but the second season had the benefit of the lead-in being a record breaking Super Bowl which averaged more than 111 million viewers. As a result The Voice's second season premiered to 37.6 million viewers and a 16.3 adults 18-49 rating. With that momentum, the Monday premiere the next night averaged a 6.7 adults 18-49 rating.  I don't see much (any) chance of that happening tonight, and while it is traditional to compare premieres to premieres and finales to finales, the better barometer here is probably to compare the premiere with last spring's finale. The final performance show averaged a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating and the results finale drew a 4.4 adults 18-49 rating.

My guess is NBC will be thrilled with anything near a 4.0 adults 18-49 rating and won't be biting its fingernails unless it debuts below a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating.

Whatever The Voice does it's reasonable to conclude The New Normal will be lower, most likely considerably.

    VOICE: 3.9

    Normal: 2.3

    Voice still has momentum.

    X-Factor: 5.6-5.9

@ULTIMA I disagree, that’s not trying to be different that’s copying another network’s show.

  • AppleStinx

I don’t know what was normal for whatever was there before ‘New Normal’ so guessing < 1.3; and 3.6 for who-died-and-made-you-queen…Xtina's show.

    @Mark

Yes, because god forbid there be two different shows about gay couples airing on TV simultaneously…

  • Mark

The voice – who cares, the show stinks 3.5 maybe
    TNN – <1.3

    I was being facetious.

I’d expect The Voice to be up on last season’s finale and I’m somewhat surprised by some of the low predictions.

Whatever problems might exist with the format (and certainly there are many) the auditions aren’t amongst them. I can see the audience tuning back in for those even if they bail on the show as the run continues. Additionally its basically going to have a clear run tonight (at least compared to the kind of competition it had in the Spring).

I live in hope that The New Normal will crash and burn.

    The Voice: 4.6
new normal; 2.8…will prob ably drop considerably after and steady our around 1.7-2.0

  • Terry

The Voice will probably premiere between 3.0 to 3.5 and Go On will be around 2.0.

With the exception of Revolution which had a great pilot the rest of NBC’s new shows such as New Normal can quickly tank & go away. NN will probably lose 1/2 of its lead in from The Voice & think they should’ve had a new Grimm on tonight instead

  • Ricky

I hope The Voice premieres very well, because RVN is really going to need all the help it can get so it can possibly become NBC’s biggest success since the first season of Heroes!

    ***9.17.12***

I don’t envision The Voice getting higher than a 4.0 or so. I must agree with Robert. The 6.7 it got was when it was still fresh, was the night after a massive premiere and the Super Bowl, and was not facing Monday Night Football. It won’t come close to that figure. I’d say the maximum would be 4.5, but I’m going 3.9

New Normal will be lucky to break 3.0, but probably more like 2.6

i hope it flops, im here for The Xfactor

  • JONNYSBRO

Honestly I think the Voice will tonight:

The Voice: 13 million with a 4.3 demo.

    X Factor: 16 million with a 5.6 demo.

I think the Voice IMO puttered out a bit. The coaches have great chemistry but the show is only good during the blind auditions and flops after. It needs to have stronger talent this season with I hope the revamps make the show alot better. I think the Voice going against the X Factor will backfire.

The X Factor I think will surprise now and have higher ratings then season 1 based on Britney tune in. Britney just is facinating to everyone. This is the difference between Christina and Britney. Christina is the better singer but Britney way more popular and still sells everytime plus people are just facinated by her.

  • RyanCanada

    I agree with @Jonnysbro

    The New Normal SUCKS!

  • Mike

Reguardless if the new normal it will get cancelled before 6 episodes and the same with animal practice….

Robert can you create a poll of which 5 shows we think will get cancelled first

  • Alex

Not here for The Voice, such a boring show. I CAN’T WAIT TO WATCH THE X-FACTOR. BRITNEY <3333333333

  • Danny

i think the original premiere’s 5.1 is the correct comparison, youre commentary is far too pessimistic
