How Will NBC's 'Revolution' Hold Up in Week #2? Is it the 'Falling Skies' of the Broadcast World?

Revolution returns for its second episode Monday night on the first official day of the new TV season. That means there will be original scripted competition going up against it  on ABC (Castle) and CBS (Hawaii Five-0).  Show ratings typically go down after the premiere, and the increased competition isn't going to help matters any. But not so fast say the fan boys (and girls): the premiere of Revolution was available online before it aired on TV, the second episode isn't!

Not being the premiere plus facing increased competition strike me as much bigger factors than online availability, so I can't imagine it not going down at least a little. My guess is it drops to at least somewhere around a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating vs. the 4.1 adults 18-49 rating for the premiere. But calling a spade a spade, I was surprised it premiered as well as it did.

At this point I'm wondering whether Revolution turns out to be the Falling Skies of the broadcast network world. That is, a show that consistently draws mostly negative feedback in the comments, even though it's consistently the networks' highest-rated scripted show with young adults!

Revolution will drop but still win its timeslot. I bet that will be in your headline!

Your CBS numbers were very un-realistic, 4.9 for Mike & Molly? 4.8 for HIMYM in it’s 8th season and a 5.8 for 2 Broke Girls?

Also to everyone saying “it dropped to a 3.8 in it’s second half”, many said last week that it probably dropped in it’s first few minutes, meaning people from The Voice were switching over!

  • CrimTV

    I’d laugh if it got a 4.1 lol :D

  • James

    I don’t think it will drop dramatically. I’d say 3.6 or 3.7.

  • MoHasanie

    I’ll say around 3.4.

Monday officially starts of fall tv competition for the 2012-13 season with abc, cbs, nbc, and fox all having new episodes. Here are my predictions for ratings tomorrow night.

Dancing with the Stars 3.6 18-49 or maybe higher due to it being all stars.

Castle: With DWS as a lead in it always benefits castle. When without Castle as a lead in it usually goes into the low 2’s. I say it will get a 2.8 18-49 rating. Then after the premiere it will probably stay in the 2.4-2.7 range.

Fox: Bones 2.1 and Mob Doctor will go 1.3

NBC: The Voice will garner a 4.0 rating and Revolution 3.4.

CBS: How I Met Your Mother I predict a 4.1 Partners I’m hoping viewers notice that the creators are great from will and grace days and hopefully that it will premiere to a 4.2. 2 Broke Girls 4.4. Mike and Molly 3.8. Hawaii 5-0 a 3.7.

Revolution had a good premier and it has been added to our DVR record list. based on the premier it looks like Jericho Part Deux but that’s OK. Jericho was a good series. the only downside is it’s on NBC. so we’ll record it and fast forward thru the commercials.

I say 3.5 is about right, maybe a little lower cos it dropped a lot in the half hours (3.8 for the second half)

  • Don Juan

I’m guessing in the upper 3’s. Maybe 3.5. I didn’t like the pilot much at all. I still have it in my DVR but its already on this ice with me.

    @bluejays and CrimTV

    HIMYM season 6 premiere: 5.0
2BG timeslot premiere: 4.5 (after a premiere in the 7s)
    Mike & Molly season 2 premiere: 4.9

I only predicted 2BG more than the previous season, but it’s a second-year series that had a very buzzy first season, so would probably gain a bunch of viewers. So I might be a little inflated on that, but I don’t see it getting 4s like the rest of the commenters on this site. Maybe 5.3 at the least.

Last January when Smash premiered behind The Voice in the Monday 10pm timeslot it premiered to a 3.5 (give or take a couple points) then quickly fell off a cliff. I think it’s going to have more to do with Monday night slotting then anything else as it’s a decent show but it’s going up against H5O and Castle, both of which have built-in audiences (though tend to skew slightly older). Revolution will likely get renewed down the line but I think it’ll likely suffer a Smash fate in ending it’s initial run somewhere in the mid 2s.

As a devoted Falling Skies watcher (even though admittedly it’s not of the highest quality), Revolution has a slightly different film-making (the camera angles look less campy in my opinion). I don’t think it’ll be the FS of the broadcast world, as beyond the basic world-into-chaos premise they split into two distinct concepts. It’s open for interpretation obviously.

This isn’t a terrible show, going by the pilot, but it’s going to suffer in the long run because this type of show should be on HBO or a network like that. Jericho had the same problem. The subject matter just doesn’t work with a nerfed tone.

  • MoHasanie

Yeah I’m also expecting at least 5.0 for 2BG. Maybe a 5.0 for HIMYM as well.

  • Jon23812

    I think 3.7.

  • sarah nz

3.3 for Revolution.. some people may be giving it a 2nd episode to improve (like me) or actaully liked it.. and the replay on Thurs night ? (I think) wasn’t too bad on the ratings scale so may have picked up some more viewers?

For the competition that I stopped watching ages ago…
    H5O – 3.4
    Castle – 2.9

    Tomorrow’s Monday 10PM Race:

    Revolution NBC – 9.8M, 3.5
    Castle ABC – 12.1M, 2.6
    Hawaii Five-O – 11.9M, 2.8

Revolution’s ratings will not do good at all against Hawaii 5-0 and Castle. My guess is:
Castle- 13.4 million viewers, 3.6 demo.
    Hawaii 5-0- 12.7 million viewers, 3.2 demo.
Revolution- 8.2 million viewers, 2.4 demo.
In the first place NBC has put out very few hit shows in the last several years, plus it’s going up against two established hit shows. My guess it’ll get cancelled in a month.

    I’m saying 3.0

  • jake

Castle is aging and HF0 is not as strong, so I think it will above 3.5.
The third week is decisive for the show, because the premieres will have ended, they need to play the cards really good to hold.
