The Cancellation Bear was going to hibernate until October 2 this year (he's getting on in years, and needs his rest), but the premiere flop of Fox's The Mob Doctor and its certain cancellation has roused him early because the show might already be gone by October 2. He's not happy about being awake already, but the early meal will console him somewhat.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Hooray the Bear is back! Enjoy your first meal! Hopefully this means it’ll lay off of Fox for a bit. I wouldn’t want him to get hungry for the new Fox comedies that are starting tonight too.

  • Dan

Bones and Glee are safe because FOX has no dramas plain and simple.

  • César

too bad for The Mob Doctor

  • senor chang

    Poor Mob Doctor.

  • Raykov

Unlike NBC, Fox doesn’t have that big number of shows for replacement. But still I wouldn’t have given Bones five emoticons just yet, 4 – yes, but 5 – it can be announced as a last season.

  • James

So long as the bear stays away from Raising Hope at Fox then I am happy.

  • Mary

I think Bill D’Elia might have had a bit of a point, especially in regards to new shows. I was thinking of watching The Mob Doctor eventually this season but now figure I don’t have to since it won’t last long. So the defeatist headlines do kind of discourage people from watching shows.

The Mob Doctor obviously isn’t long for this world, but given Partners’ dismal performance, there’s a very, very small chance it might escape being the first show cancelled. Nah … probably not. But at least it’ll have company in the bear’s stomach soon.

The “defeatist headlines” appear only *after* the show airs and it’s clear people have *already* decided not to watch.

Are you also complaining about the TV reviewers who tell people not to watch *before* the show airs?

    No, didn’t think so.

Not inconceivable, but I can see CBS motivated to hold off just to give Fox that honor!

When does the meaning of ‘cancelled’ shift from ‘off the schedule early’ to ‘not renewed’? Because, while there’s clearly no chance either of the non-MD shows aren’t going to get their full 22-26 this year, I’d take the kind of odds 5-emotes implies betting against both shows being around next year.

    @ mary

if you’re thinking about watching it, then why haven’t you watched it? do you think that a network is going to keep a show around because you ‘might’ decide to watch it 6-7 episodes in? and obviously if you’re watching a site like this, you are aware of how ratings work. i would also imagine the ratings reflected for mob doctor reflect more people who just never cared about watching it (me) versus the handful (maybe?) of those who were planning on just picking it up mid season.

Mob Doctor really isn’t that bad (Leave Me Alone, Bill)

However, I’m smoking the salmon now for the bear & may serve it with a honey glaze

  • Sarah

I hope Bones keeps it up. :) Granted, the numbers aren’t what they used to be (obviously), but considering the competition I think it did pretty well last night.

When I say canceled, I *always* mean “canceled by the end of the season/not renewed for another season” as noted in several locations in the text.

I caught the Mob Doctor on the Friday replay last week, and it isn’t a bad show. I could actually see myself getting into it, but there is so many shows on Monday night that my DVR is already on overload. I hope that Fox gives it a chance and looks at maybe moving it to a different slot just to see what if?

Now, if you had said the Mob Doctor *ratings* really aren’t that bad, I’d think you were smoking something other than salmon. ;)

I like Mob Doctor, hope they give it a chance.

  • AppleStinx

It is entertaining while it lasts. The side-story of a runaway bride with bleeding eyes still wearing her wedding gown was nice. As was the wife who tried to cyanide-poison her mobster hubby appearing dead at the hospital with her ring finger chopped off. Marriage is over, death by cyanide poisoning. Attention to detail.

“I like Mob Doctor, hope they give it a chance.”

A chance has been given, and squandered.
