Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts potential renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from September 17-23, 2012):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor  0.67
Bones      1.03
Glee      1.30

The cancellation bear was going to hibernate until October 2 this year (he's getting on in years, and needs his rest), but the premiere flop of Fox's The Mob Doctor and its certain cancellation has roused him early because the show might already be gone by October 2. He's not happy about being awake already, but the early meal will console him somewhat.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I have a feeling that in another week or two The Mob Doctor will be replaced by Kitchen Nightmares or Bones repeats. Fringe won’t move to that time-slot, and it doesn’t make much sense to move Touch there.

Fox is going to have a rough fall. Mondays are a wash, and now it looks like Tuesdays will be a wash. Of course Fridays have never been very friendly to them either. Fox is going to have to do some serious work this year in order to rebound next season.

  • David

I love the Mob Doctor, just need to give it a chance. Maybe put it in another time slot. Too hard to beat 4 established hit shows on Monday nights.

  • Bill Gorman

@David, Fan Excuse Bingo! Well played, three squares in one comment.

  • Slam

Yes, Mob Doctor and about four other new shows each week as they debut.

  • madbengalsfan85

@David: Bones renders your argument null and void. Because Bones has to contend with the same reality shows, HIMYM/Partners, and lets not forget MNF

Let’s not forget the “it’s on first in Canada” arguement. Yeah, occasionally a US show will be on first in Canada. And of those once in a while it will be the all-along-openly-declared-plan and not a one-off. Such is the case with The Mob Doctor on CTV at 9pm Sunday.

The premiere on 16 September had an audience of 1.308 million. If it were a Canadian show it would be a hit and talk of renewal would be all over the place. But it is an import and the Canadian numbers are pretty meaningless in determining the fate of The Mob Doctor.

Horribly unappealing title. Not so bad a show. Doctors in bed with the mob versus doctors in bed with each other.

  • JRB

Oh well, might as well cancel my season pass on the DVR for the Mob Doctor. Easy come, easy go.

  • Dan

The Mob Doctor was basically doomed from the start, it had bad critical reviews, but if a show can’t hold up than it needs to be replaced. FOX has The Mob Doctor scheduled for October 1 which means it may be 3 and out for the show or they may keep it until October 8 and announce a replacement (Touch for November. My guess is that Touch wont do amazing but probably better than Mob Doctor. Its better than airing Touch on Fridays and Mob Doctor could just be burned off on Fridays.

  • CJWoods

Does this mean that Jordana Spiro is suddenly the female Christian Slater?

  • KJ Styles

@Fed- I liked ER but I liked House more. Hugh Laurie should have won an Emmy.

  • KJ Styles

With House gone, the only things I plan on watching on Fox this year are the NFL, and the MLB playoffs as long as the Yankees last.

  • Ray

Please don’t eat Mob Doctors, Cancellation Bear! Why aren’t more people watching it? I was hoping to stockpile some episodes and watch them later this fall. I can’t watch it now because there are so many other shows on, and they are all much better. And now I really don’t want to watch it now because people are saying it is going to be cancelled. It’s so stupid. If all but a few million people are avoiding the show, doesn’t the network understand it has the highest number of potential viewers of any show? Doesn’t the network know how many latent viewers there are for a show like this? There must be at least…..dozens of us.

“It has the highest number of latent viewers” should have been a Bingo square.

Why would anyone even try a show called “The Mob Doctor”? Seriously.

  • AppleStinx

    @Page 48

What is the issue with calling a show ‘The Mob Doctor’?

  • ToXiX

Have to agree, the name suicided the show.

  • Claudia

I have watched the episodes…..I like the show but find myself not wanting to get to into it because it may leave me upset to see it taken off….but hey weirder things have happened. I can see the show going places if people would give it a chance.

  • Eric_Philly

    Wahoo!!! The Mob Doctor falls.

  • Lisa

Mob Doctor deserves to fail. It’s a horrible show. It’s useful for comic relief, though. I laughed more during its first two episodes than I have during the pilots of all the new comedies combined so far this season.

  • Laura

The dumbest move Fox ever did was when they moved Bones from Thursdays to give Touch a chance there. They were established there, strong against Grey’s Anatomy, even winning the slot a couple of times, usually matching Grey’s or losing by little. Both Touch and The Finder did horrible in that slot.

Yes, Mondays were completely dead and now Bones is holding on and keeping it over 2.0’s, but they owned Thurdays with X-Factor + Bones and AI + Bones.

Glee was doing good with New Girl on Tuesdays, way better than the new comedies will probably do. They turned two great nights in average and bad ones.

And I doubt Touch will do any better on Fridays now than it did on Mondays and Thursdays.

  • NetRoger

If the ratings were below expectations but the critics loved it, the network might try to promote it. But the reviews for Mob Doctor have been dreadful. The only reason it will be on next week is they may not have anything ready to take its place. After all, how many times a week can they air New Girl?
