Too bad for long-time Castle fans–the season opener was quite good (better than expected, and I’ve pretty much avoided the opener for the past couple years). The figures for Revolution just show how pessimistic people have become to want to watch something like that drek at all–barely one step up from the bottom of the barrel reality drivel (too much redundancy?).

I’ve been checking this site for about a year now to read up on TV ratings and see how my favorite shows are doing. Over this past year, I’ve noticed you spend a lot of time and energy bashing Castle. You seriously need to cool it with that. I see your lame, wildly inaccurate, and uninformed comments on here all the damn time and I’ve seriously had enough of your ignorance. So, here, allow me to educate you about Castle…and maybe next time you go to post another of your weirdo Castle-hating posts you’ll think twice.

Contrary to your assertions, Castle is actually a very popular show. ABC makes a lot of money off of it between syndication on TNT (there’s actually an all-day Castle marathon on TNT as I write this…name another current TV drama that’s been given an entire day of air time on a major cable network), the NY Times best-selling books (the recent one is currently tied with James Patterson’s latest effort at #7 on the Best-Seller List), several graphic novels based on the book series Richard Castle writes on the show, a series of trading cards to be released on 11/30/12, and a board game also to be released in November. The sales of the Castle S4 DVD (which was released on 9/11/12) have been through the roof…in fact, many fans were reporting it sold out at major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. Oh, not to mention it was last year’s People”s Choice Awards winner for Favorite TV Crime Drama. Oh wait, there’s more…Rolling Stone magazine just featured Castle in its latest issue as one of the best shows of the fall…aaaaaand Time magazine (on-line edition) also recently profiled it as an example of how to properly construct and then bring together a lead romantic duo without killing the chemistry or tanking the show. Oh, also, ABC has replaced Grey’s Anatomy with Castle as the show it runs on Saturdays at midnight…it might not seem like much but that’s just another indication that ABC counts on Castle to bring in viewers (even at 12am on Saturday nights). They could have chosen any other show to go up against Saturday Night Live…but they didn’t choose another show, did they? They chose Castle. Right, and then there was that entire Paley Fest panel devoted to Castle back in March…it was such a popular and in-demand event that Paley did a live (sold out) broadcast of the panel (taking place in LA) at Paley Center here in NYC (accompanied by an entire day of Castle-inspired events). I was there. The place was packed and buzzing with excited and devoted Castle fans. I have a feeling all of those people (plus the 1,000+ people in LA) would have something to say about all the non-sense you’re on here spouting all the time. I know there were several other shows with Paley panels but no others had bi-coastal events planned around them. But I guess that doesn’t mean much, right? All sucky, unpopular shows are the cause for such events, right?

I watch a good amount of TV. I am a part of several fan bases for the shows I enjoy. I can say with 100% confidence that there is NO other show on TV right now with a fan base that is as fervent, devoted, and enthusiastic as the Castle fans. Over 10 million people watched the premiere live (and that’s not counting the people who recorded it on their DVRs and have since watched it or will watch it before the next episode airs). That was more than ANY OTHER SCRIPTED TELEVISION SHOW airing on Monday night. Reality/contest shows like DWTS and The Voice always draw more viewers than scripted shows, so I don’t even consider those when I’m talking about Castle’s numbers. Castle’s ratings have gotten stronger and stronger (on average) with each passing season. It’s never been a “bubble” show and that won’t be the case this year either. DWTS isn’t the best lead-in for Castle…it would be better suited to be paired with another drama…still, Castle is thriving in its Monday at 10pm time slot. It has never been shifted to another slot and, as far as we know, ABC has never even considered moving it. If it was a show that, as you so eloquently put, should have been strangled in its cradle (LOVELY imagery, by the way…not at all inappropriate or creepy) we would have known it was struggling and that ABC had it tagged as a bubble show. I mean, we all knew ABC was iffy about renewing Private Practice last year…that was no secret…nor was ABC’s take on what to do with shows like Missing, Cougar Town, and GCB. Castle has NEVER been lumped in with a group of shows considered to be walking the fine line between cancellation and renewal, has it? No, I didn’t think so.

As it should so happen, networks are actually caring less and less about the demo as it has become an outdated way of measuring a show’s success. You would know that if you actually did any sort of research or tried to see past your Castle-hating horse blinders for once. The demo, of course, factors in to a degree (no denying that) but it does not carry the weight that it used to, not now in the days of DVR, iTunes, and Amazon Instant Video, not when people are watching TV by means other than live at the time the show is airing. The demo really isn’t accurate anymore because the networks can’t determine who’s watching the show on ABC.com, or downloading it on iTunes, or purchasing it from Amazon Instant Video. There are too many options and variables now for the demo to be accurate and mean what it used to. So, your constant harping on the demo and how it’s tolling for Castle’s death is pretty much a moot point.

Speaking of iTunes, Castle’s season premiere shot to #2 on the iTunes sales chart immediately after the episode aired on Monday. I just checked and it’s still there. It must be so hard for an “unpopular” show to push its way up those charts and past all those other much more popular shows. Hmmm…wonder how that happened…

Have you ever even watched the show? I mean, what is your deal? Why are you so focused on this hate you have for it? It’s one thing to not like a show or understand its appeal but you’ve taken it to another level. You’ve been calling for Castle’s cancellation for such a long time now…when are you gonna give it up already? Find a new vendetta, for God’s sake. People on here are really tired of it…I know I am, at least.

Clearly, I’m a fan of Castle. I don’t care if you’re not. I’m not trying to convince you to watch the show or change your opinion of it. Love it, hate it, whatever, I really don’t care. I’m just saying that it’s completely maddening to read post after post from you asserting that it’s an unpopular show that should have been cancelled years ago…a show that’s undeservedly taking up a valuable time slot…a show that is going to slip so far in the ratings that it will be cancelled by the end of the season. Your posts are uninformed and you clearly know nothing about this show and how successful it truly is. Unless you’re secretly some bigwig at ABC who’s on the inside track of things, I think it’s time for you to knock it off and keep your ignorance to yourself.

    Grow up.

@Elana…as a video game junkie, let me tell you that good magazine reviews don’t count for a hill of beans. With video games, it is a common occurrence for reviewers to be wined and dined by publishers. Treat them nice, let them live large and come review time, they will get mushy over your game (*cough*Call of Duty*cough*). The only reviews that hold any merit to me are the ones written by actual viewers, because they usually are the most authentic. Felt the need to make that point.

To debunk your “Ratings don’t matter” theory. Advertisers only care about people they can sell to. If you’re buying a show on iTunes, you aren’t watching commercials, which makes you irrelevant. Now ABC does factor in online viewership, but not heavily. Because those advertising $$$ make their world go round.

As for your words regarding a certain poster…I’m not touching that one.

  • Chris

I mean, assuming you’re not like 87 years old, like much of Castle’s audience, in which case that advice comes far too late.

  • madbengalsfan85

Okay, I take my last comment back…Chris, you’re an idiot

  • Joseph

Did ESPN’s “Sportscenter” after Monday’s (September 24th) NFL game attract more viewers than any other broadcast or cable show in it’s time period??

Looks like it considering the numbers.

  • Chris

    @person-with-sad-boardname-featuring-team-that-has-never-won-a-Superbowl–you oughta know.

  • huldu

4.1 to 3.4… ouch. Probably be below 3 next week for sure.

  • William Haney

I am STUNNED about Revolution’s numbers. I thought Hawaii Five-0 would blow them away. Five-0 finishing a shocking third. Wow… Not surprised The Voice won 18-49 and a very strong second overall. This could be a renaissance year for the peacock network. Finally.

  • Fennerbender

@Eridapo-I guess I need to be more clear sorry:

Hard to be shocked if you like both Bones and Castle. Bones did about as (I) expected and Castle did a tad worse than (I)expected, but NBC is the wild card here. MNF affected (the timeslots it usually affects) all about the same (as it has for years now). The Voice has replaced DWTS and 2 1/2 Men as a heavy hitter so no surprise it hurt ABC and CBS harder than FOX. Also hurting CBS and ABC is that with the Voice being strong they got a good release for their 10pm show Revolution that FOX doesn’t even compete with.

Hawaii 50 season premiere was fabulous -too bad so many people missed it-well, those that are tracked anyway. According to Facebook responses, it was huge not to mention the over 10,000 people who crowded the beach in Oahu to watch it on Sunday at the premiere on the beach. Much more character expanse and action then the other two shows in the time slot.
I’m sure it will pick up. Revolution was good but I can see it going the way of Jericho. If nothing else, move 50 to another night. It’s too good to lose.

  • Chris

H50 started behind Castle last season as well–didn’t finish that way.

But face it, it’s a very weak timeslot for all the networks, and the bigger cable channels ought to counter-program more there.

  • HB

Horrible numbers for Castle and even worse for Hawaii-5-0

  • Sarah

“I hate the new Bones intro song.”

    Me too.

  • BonesFringeFan

Oh my lord Castle. That ain’t good. Especially for such a big episode. But to be honest, they disappointed with the premiere in my opinion…

Sooo happy for Bones! I was worried about the ratings in terms of viewers, but demo is all that matters :)

Also, does anyone wanna explain what the adjusted numbers mean? As in why would a show be adjusted up or down from the original ratings? What changes? :)

  • Derick

With numbers like that, you can expect Partners to get cancelled at TAAM to be back at 9 on Mondays in no time. And all will be right with the world.

  • jessie

@Elena i really appreciate your words, i am part of that castle fan base and very proudly.

  • AlexFan

Sorry to say #H50 was down in ratings, CBS needs to shake up the #H50 front office, the actors are superb, get new blood in control of the ship and it will come out on top. Top executive too many fish in the fire and not concentrating on making the show what we the fans would love to see. I personally enjoyed the show, so tired of the Castle/H-50 feud. Ratings in question biggest cable company owns NBC could very easily skew ratings, Hmmm just a thought

  • jo

Revolution is going to start dropping off and Hawaii Five 0 will resume its place.
