ABC’s “Private Practice” is Up from its Tuesday Premiere and Tops its Season Finale

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00)

With “DWTS: All-Stars -- The Results Show” and “Private Practice,” ABC (9.9 million) qualified as the 2nd-most-watched TV network on season premiere Tuesday to CBS (“NCIS”/”NCIS: LA”/”Vegas”).  ABC outdrew NBC by 2.5 million viewers (“The Voice”/”Go On”/”New Normal”/”Parenthood” = 7.4 million) and more than doubled Fox’s comedy premieres on the night (+102% ahead of “New Girl”/”Ben and Kate”/”New Girl”/”The Mindy Project” = 4.9 million).

“DWTS: All-Stars -- The Results Show” (8:00-10:00 p.m.)

Gaining audience during each half-hour of its 2-hour telecast opposite big competition, ABC’s “DWTS: All-Stars -- The Results Show” (11.6 million) finished No. 2 among Viewers in its 8:00-10:00 p.m. time period, outdrawing by wide margins both NBC (+32% - 8.8 million) and Fox (+137% - 4.9 million).  Building throughout its broadcast, “The Results Show” ranked No. 2 in its final half-hour (9:30-10:00 p.m.) in Adults 18-49 (2.5/7) and Adults 25-54 (3.4/8).  Actress Pamela Anderson was the first celebrity dancer to be eliminated from the competition this season.

“Private Practice” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s 6th season premiere of “Private Practice” beat out NBC’s “Parenthood” by 1.8 million viewers (6.6 million vs. 4.8 million), by 6% in Adults 18-49 (1.9/5 vs. 1.8/5) and by 9% in Adults 25-54 (2.4/6 vs. 2.2/6).  The ABC drama ranked No. 1 in the hour with key Women (W18-34/W18-49).

  • ABC’s “Private Practice” was up over its April premiere in its Tuesday time period across all key Adults:  A18-34 (+18%), A18-49 (+12%) and A25-54 (+4%).  In addition, “Private Practice” topped its season finale in May (5/15/12) by 6% in Adults 18-49 and by 30% in Adults 18-34.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 45% currently, from 42% at the same point in 2011. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

I remember how they had poor ratings the first week when they came to Tuesdays, but the 2nd one was much better. It’s their final season anyway (not official yet)…

  • Dan

ABC should officially announce that this is the final season and they should wrap the show up nicely like how Gossip Girl is going out. Kate Walsh is leaving after 13 episodes and it was barely renewed for a 6th season. Please ABC just end this show.

  • John A

So Kate Walsh is leaving for sure at episode 13? I thought maybe had it got a backorder later on she might leave at Episode 22.

  • Dan

She said she’s leaving after Season 6 of 13 episodes, if the show gets the back 9 maybe she’ll stay but it doesnt look that way. But if she is leaving ABC should just end the show at 13 episodes.

Private Practice 100% needs to end when Kate Walsh leaves. It’s her show.

  • senor chang

I didn’t know this. That must soften the blow a bit, then.

  • John A

I agree Rob60990. I want it to end when Kate Walsh leaves. It would feel weird watching it without her.

  • OMG

ABC had some great drama pilots this year. I am really crossing my fingers that they do well. In the case where they do, they need slots for their midseason premieres. Maybe this would be the perfect scenario where PP ends after 13 episodes. And a new show or even Body of Proof can take the slot.

  • Babygate

The show was already low in ratings. The move to Tuesdays to make room for Scandal lost it even more viewers and it never recovered. Maybe that’s why Kate wants to leave. ABC really messed her show up. Anybody who watched the show knew that move was a bad idea but since its a Shonda show they wanted to use Greys as a lead in. They shifted PPP to make room for Scandal and Body of Proof to make room for PPP. And all for nothing because Scandal gets worst ratings than PPP ever got. And I don’t think that’s going to change this season. You gotta wonder what ABC is thinking. They are treating Shonda as the goose that lays the golden eggs based on Greys which keeps declining because the writing got so bad.

Premiere rating #s of 1.9 may be the talk of the bldg. at NBC,but among other shows, it doesn’t scream “WATCH ME”. If Kate Walsh only committed for 13 episodes, then ABC should cancel it after 13 episodes, basically it is Kate’s show. Is she going back to Greys?

  • Eridapo

    That is some spin….

  • Tony JJ

    @a p garcia

no Kate isn’t going back to Grey’s (as far as we know). Kate has said she wants to move on to different roles. Apparently she’s really good at comedy. I would love ABC to build a comedy around her because I would love to see that! I love Kate Walsh, but honestly Private Practice was never a great show, it was okay in it’s first/second season, but I haven’t watched in a long time.

Now I wouldn’t pass out Kate returning for an episode here and there, but I don’t think she’ll ever become a regular again.

PLEASE DON’T CANCEL PRIVATE PRACTICE!!!!!! I love this show. My wish is that I think it should go back to Thursday nights. Any show that is worth watching is taken off. It’s so sad.

Anderson Coopers talk show is so great. His show is so unlike any other. Please rethink this.
