    Gem,

    TV is a numbers game, it’s about money, and about demographics. Minorities, as the name implies are minorities. It means that alone they can’t keep a show on the air just because it has a minority lead. With a good show this discussion would not be happening. Scandal’s problem is not the minority leading lady. Apart from the 2 characters, Scandal is whiter and less diverse than Grey’s Anatomy, that is an ensemble show. Scandal’s problem is not the color of the lead, is that is bad.

    African Americans in the US are 12% of the population. If all watched, Scandal would be beating every show on TV! How can you accuse people of racism when not even all African Americans care to watch. It just proves that we all have more in common that what separates us. No matter color, race or creed, you cannot make people watch crap.

    the only reason glee plummeted is because every song on there on thursday sucked, and every seen with sarah jessica parker make ever inch in me want to turn it. it was one of the worst episodes ive seen and ive seen every single one. Britney 2.0 was the best of the 3 episodes so far. Its funny how a live show on the next gets lower viewers than a repeat of vampire diaries… I hope cw improves this year.

    What if ABC does this:

    Last Resort wednesday 20:00 much more room to breathe

    Middle after MF wednesday 21:30 for a killer comedy hour and a great lead in for Nashville.

    Suburgatory tuesday 21:30 after happy endings against Mindy and TNN where it could stand firm.

    Neighbors cancelled, ap 23 on hold.

  • Slam

    Why would they schedule shows based on military time?
    Also ABC Tue comedies are gonna tank.
    Last Resort into comedies makes no sense whatsoever.
    Moving an anchor show like The Middle to a later slot for a family comedy makes no sense.
    Moving Suburgatory makes no sense.

    Parks is dependent on “The Office” because in its fifth season, it’s not a self-starter. And the pic above had a “joke” that the promo used to sell the episode about liquifying a child. Sick and dark thoughts aside, is there anything inherently funny about that “joke”? They can’t sell the show. It struggles to be funny to a wide audience while only amusing itself.

  • Slam

    Re: syndication. “WKRP” was successful (and brilliant) in its first years in syndication but by the late 80s, was off major affiliates and sold cheaper to smaller stations through the 90s. It landed on Nick in the late 90s and quickly disappeared. My point is that most comedies aren’t evergreens. And most comedies struggling in year three and four aren’t going to make the studio much money. “Community,” for example, is going to Comedy Central destined to eventually wind up at 4am on weekends when the viewers are too hungover to mind what they watch.

    How dismal NBC has become on Thursdays is literally depressing. They’ve completely given up on the 10pm hour. So sad. Will it stay like that even for the November sweeps or will rpts of say Grimm take over the slot?!

    Just what I expected of Last Resort. I really hope it doesn’t fall farther but u know it will.

  • omabin

    I know that maybe I am just being hopeful with Last Resort, but its ratings are still superior to most ABC dramas at this point (Castle, Private Practice, Scandal). It was of course beaten by Grey’s and I expect it to be beaten by the Sunday lineup as well and Nashville, but if it keeps doing better results than most of the 10 pm draas (which is not inconceivable, seeing as Castle and PP will likely drop further), wouldn’t that be tolerable territory for ABC, especially in such a problematic slot?

  • Mark

    Last.resort is my new favorite show!:)

  • POI

    POI, TBBT, Elementary, Even 2.5 men were alll amazing last night loved every second of it all.

  • Oliver

    @Slam
    The joke was it’s a child-sized drink because it’s the size of a liquefied child.

    That’s a perfectly fine joke, one that I can imagine a CBS sitcom making.

    I think Parks struggles because NBC screwed up its launch, not because the show inherently doesn’t have broad appeal. NBC should have put it after The Office for its first two seasons. Incidentally, Parks has been in the 8:30 slot for most of its life, not after The Office.

  • omabin

    So, NBC Comedies look like this at the moment:
    1. Go On: 3.2
    2. The New Normal: 2.3
    3. The Office: 2.1
    4. Guys with Kids: 1.9
    5. Parks and Recreation: 1.7
    6. Animal Practice/Up All Night: 1.4

    (Post Olympics premieres not included). This makes Guys with Kids in the top 3 comedies not scheduled to end this year… I think that’s quite interesting and unexpected

  • Dana

    Glee seriously won’t last longer, after season 4 more core characters leave high school, so it’s time to wrap up after one more year, it will die to 3 million by season 5 or 6.

  • Nadine

    @Brandon
    WTF, why don’t Nielsen families watch Parks and Rec?

    For the same reasons everybody else doesn’t.

  • Nadine

    @Slam
    Parks is dependent on “The Office” because in its fifth season

    Of course it isn’t. I’m always amazed at these arguments–it’s not my show’s fault that it has dismal ratings — it’s the fault of that show the network insists on putting in front of it! Where is the sense in that, most especially for a show that’s been own for years & years?

  • SarahL

    I like Scandal although it is not a show that I would watch on a regular basis. I understand why it is struggling to grow its audience. A black female lead is definitely problematic for some in our society, but so is its premise an illicit hot romance between a married white Republican president and a black political consultant.

    It also does not help that the show is straddling multiple genres; political drama, procedural, and serial drama. Political dramas are a hard sell, period. Look how Political Animals flopped ratings wise and it was on cable. I actually think that Scandal would be far more successful on able. It feels more like an USA or FX show.

  • Nadine

    @David
    Two and a Half Men losing a lot of the lead-in from Big Bang Theory.

    Again, this argument makes no sense. After all the years the 2.5M has been on (it’s now 2.9 :-) ) how can the show leading into be of much significance? If people don’t watch 2.5M anymore it’s because they have lost interest or the show has shark-tanked. It’s not like shows can easily pull TBBT-level ratings these days. TBBT is a monster right now.

  • SarahL

    The comparison of Last Resort to Scandal or any other show makes no sense at this point until we see how Last Resort‘s ratings do over the next three to four weeks.

  • CrimTV

    @SarahL

    Agree with you, with Scandal’s small episode orders, it belongs on cable!

  • omabin

    I also agree with the comments that Scandal should have been a cable show, i think it would have been a cable hit had it premiered in the USA network.
