Way to go GH. It is a must see right now. I’m loving it, and also it’s on 1 hour sooner! Love all the stories. GO GH!!!!!

I was a little disappointed in Y&R’s 10,000th episode this week, it was good to see a few more people back but all in all it was a bit of a letdown. I will be curious how the show looks different when the new team’s episodes start airing soon. I cannot stand who Sharon has become in the past couple of months, I guess I was more used to her being kind of wishy-washy and bouncing from one guy to the next, but this villainness doesn’t seem to suit her. I actually think Sharon Case is a great actress and has risen to the challenge of the awful story they have written her into, but hope her character stabilizes.

One more thing I wanted to say, everybody goes on and on about the women 18-49 rating all the time, since we are always told how important that is. I clicked over on the full ratings and realized something I don’t think I ever noticed before – there are more men watching Y&R than the women 18-49 watching any soap. In fact, over 20% of each soap’s total viewers are men:

    Men 18+ Viewers
    1. Y&R 943,000 (+29,000/-13,000)
    2. B&B 713,000 (+38,000/+133,000)
    3. GH 557,000 (+36,000/+111,000)
    4. DAYS 479,000 (+26,000/-37,000)

    Total Viewers
    1. Y&R 4,289,000 (+73,000/+40,000)
    2. B&B 3,139,000 (-25,000/+497,000)
    3. GH 2,578,000 (+50,000/+139,000)
    4. DAYS 2,312,000 (+15,000/-10,000)

    % Total
    B&B 22.7%
    Y&R 22.0%
    GH 21.6%
    DAYS 20.7%

I know that the mantra for ratings watchers in daytime has always been “women 18 to 49″ but you can’t tell me that almost a million total viewers a week is statistically insignificant. My guess is that would put Y&R at about a 1.3 or so (?) if you looked at the ratings of men viewers. Not a huge deal, but as a guy it’s frustrating to think that my viewing habits don’t matter as much. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

  • WMD

The advertising rates are based on Women 18-49. Why? Pretty much because it always has been. At this point, it doesn’t make much sense, since 25-54 would provide a higher number of viewers, as would (as you point out) men 18+. But I don’t see them ever changing that. Indeed, most of primetime is also based on 18-49 (but both genders); the only shows that go by 25-54 are, I believe, cable news.

This new low of 1.1 (yikes!) makes me think that Y&R is not quite as “safe” as we usually tell ourselves. Sure, in total viewers it’s far enough ahead to make falling out of the #1 spot almost impossible; indeed, not even the OLTL finale episode (2.7) made it to any level Y&R makes regularly. But a 1.1 in W18-49 puts it only 0.1 ahead of both B&B and GH. If this trend continues, we could see Y&R leave the airwaves before either of the others (shocking, I know)!

That said, I don’t see it staying at 1.1 or even 1.2 next week, what with the anniversary episode. As for the show itself… there was some good stuff there – Sharon and Tucker getting the Victor smackdown, in particular – but the whole thing seemed rushed. Normally in this kind of story, everyone would think he was dead for a week or two, not just one episode. The jump in emotions was a bit jarring for me.

Over on GH…when Elizabeth revealed the fake test results to Jason, I literally threw pretzels at my TV. WTF CARTINI? Elizabeth does not do evil things like this! I only regret that my poor throwing skills meant that I missed Elizabeth’s face.

  • GH

WMD….you havent watch GH when Liz was evil or bad, not evil..the actress played it real good.

One more thing I wanted to say, everybody goes on and on about the women 18-49 rating all the time, since we are always told how important that is. I clicked over on the full ratings and realized something I don’t think I ever noticed before – there are more men watching Y&R than the women 18-49 watching any soap

And there are more 50+ women watching Y&R than Women 18-49 and Men 18+ combined (~2.6 million or 60% of the total audience is Women 50+).

My guess is that would put Y&R at about a 1.3 or so (?)

The (?) being the meaningful part. A 1.3 or so of what? Certainly not Men 18-49 or Adults 18-49.

Goodbye, DOOL! They can’t get above a .7

  • I like this show

My god does DOOL need to die. The whole reason I quit watching 3-5? years ago was Sami and EJ show AND what do you know it’s once again Sami/EJ show. HOW MANY TIMES CAN YOU REPEAT THE SAME CRAP!!!!!! Now that GH is at 2pm I can watch both but I refuse to watch DOOL. Best thing they could off done to the show was actually kill people off years ago when they were on a Island together when NOBODY DIED. KILL SALEM!!!! Put it out of it’s pathetic misery.

  • MBmomof3

Great news for GH in its new timeslot. I am really enjoying it. I actually enjoyed seeing Liz being so bad, but hope she comes to her senses and fesses-up soon.

On Y&R it seems they should have ousted MAB long ago. The 10,000 episode was as disappointing as the rest of her storytelling. Looking forward to see the stories Josh Griffith has in store for us.

Liking the Katie/Brad story on B&B. Less focus on “Bermuda” (my reference to Steffy/Hope/Liam triangle that made all the other B&B characters mysteriously disappear).

I like DOOL, but they are struggling. Hopefully their stories pick up soon. It now competes with GH in my market, but they competed with OLTL before, so I’m not sure how that impacts their ratings.

  • Greg

Carlivati has done an excellent work transforming GH. WOW! I was a OLTL fan and didn’t watch GH until OLTL went off the air in antipation of the OLTL charactors joining. The show was beyond tired and boring then, almost painful to endure. Now it’s thriving! LOVE LOVE LOVE Connie and Heather. Enjoyed the pathogen story. GREAT JOB GUYS…Oh, and I’m a male 18-49 demographic

  • steven m. burton

GH really does seem to have gotten a second wind. Good for them. Longtime ABC soap fan here, especially OLTL. Always loved Heather on GH. So deliciously evil and maniacal.

DOOL is in deep caca right now. Those numbers are horrid no matter which way you turn them. Bad total audience figures. Bad households numbers. Bad demo numbers. If they don’t improve this soon, NBC will turn out the lights on Salem for good.

Greg, I am right with you. I am in the 18-49 demographic too. Don’t know why we don’t seem to count either. Dudes spend money just the same as women. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, women were probably the only people home during the daytime soap hours. Once I was out of school in the early 1990s, there were VCRs. So I taped the soaps I wanted to watch. Then TIVO came along. SOAPNet was a good source. Online episodes are available. Guys have all kinds of ways of accessing the programs and that probably explains the substantial male audience for these shows.

  • MBmomof3

I think one of the most exciting things about GH’s “second wind” as the above posters so aptly phrased it, is that it proves that a show can rebound and can become exciting and fresh for the fans again. Are you listening DOOL and Y&R? I think GH has hit its groove and will get even better in the coming months leading up to the big 5-0 and hopefully beyond. Kudos to ABC for FINALLY supporting GH and the talent on screen and behind tne scenes for making the show appointment TV once again. I know not everyone would agree with my opinion, and that’s fine. But, I’d like to see all 4 of the remaining soaps achieve their potential. They offer so much history and entertainment value that is actually very rare in today’s TV environment.

  • David

Awesome to see GH gain in total viewers and in 18-49. Also if you look over at the other site that posts the ratings soapoperanetwork GH is number 1 in 18-34 so some great news for GH doing really well in the new time slow and the show has been ao good lately!

  • Sara

‘I like this show’ i hope you are joking ?! It is not the Sami/Ej show AT ALL but the Rafe/Gabi show with propping of lame couples like Rafe/Sami and Jennifer/Daniel, when Sami and Ej had little chance together it was in august and Ratings were HIGH !! So stop your irrational lies please, it is annoying !

  • Sophie

Days is the Sami and EJ hour. That is why I stopped watching. Sami just isn’t that great as a lead in actress. JMO I’m tired of Sami and her 3 men. Not interested! That is what has brought there ratings down.
I’m so loving GH, great stories and keeps me watching. Sorry to say I’m glad they are winning the ratings against Days. It’s on at the same time here, and GH wins!

  • diana

Not enjoying any of the soaps right now. DAYS has NO couples I love any more, now that Melanie’s gone and Lucas is floundering around while Sami tries to decide between Rafe and EJ. Can’t believe they fired Matthew Ashford so they can have another go-round of boring Dannifer. GH doesn’t have any great couples either, but at least there’s some hope there. Ian Buchanan is back as Duke next week. Can’t wait til Anna sees her long-lost husband. Robert Scorpio would make this scenario perfect, but I’ll take what I can get.

  • Jo

    Goodbye soaps period.

  • Sean

@JO Get a LIFE & stop raining on others parade…and GH is NEVER going off so, stop dreaming up things!

  • Marissa

GH is on fire. The show is fantastic lately!

  • I like this show

@Sara maybe stating that it was EJ/Sami show again was a overstatement idk I watched one episode they kissed, it was a total turn off and the rest of the show sucked anyway didn’t watch the entire show it was so bad. MY POINT I was trying to make was DOOL is SOOO boring same stuff always happens that’s why I quit watching didn’t watch for years and seemingly they still have the same storylines going ex. Sami/EJ Nick/Mel Nicole/random guy A VS B. You may enjoy it fine but what i said about it being repetitive couldn’t be more true.
