I can tell you from experience, men do love soaps. My husband (56) can watch them all, including Eastenders on PBS and my son (19) has watched them for years. In fact my husband got me watching the CBS soaps. I was a OLTL fan and love how the OLTL characters and some storylines crossed over to GH. I think it really helped their ratings. Love Todd Manning and his psycho self. I am sick of the Sami storyline on DOOL. You would think she was the only woman on the show. She looks tired and worn. I was very disappointed when Rafe went back to her he deserves better, at least someone he doesn’t have to rescue all the time while she sleeps around on him. While I hope Days makes a comeback, the writers need to make some serious changes. Hey how about another explosion and have EJ, Lucas, and Jennifer have head injuries and the two men could fight over Jennifer? Or Sami and Will fighting over EJ?

  • Lily

Well, the only reason I watch DOOL is for Sami and EJ. But, just get disappointed because although they’ve gotten close a couple of times, they have never really ever got to be a real couple. Looks like it is Sami/Rafe pairing that is going to win out (for now), and so I’m not planning on continuing to watch. Wish they didn’t continue to have EJ as a total villian and give Ejami a chance. Not really that into the other characters/pairings. Though Nick/Gabby could be interesting. So could Eric and Chloe return.

  • Chrisann

To any I offended with me saying I didn’t think Days was “shoving the gay storyline” down peoples throats. I never meant you had to like the fact that people are gay….though for the life of me I don’t get why you would have a problem with it. But it is a part of life and even if they didn’t show it on tv it would still be a part of life whether you like it or not. So IMO it should be shown even if it offends people or not.
GH is tearing it up! Great writing and some good acting….except for the guy who plays Trey. Days is great too. Heres hoping the ratings rise for all 4 of the last soaps on network daytime!!

  • LynTX

I am always amazed when I see posters on the various MBs referring to soaps as ‘fantasy’. Nothing “other-worldly” about soaps! They are fictional characters, for the most part, dealing with real life events (ie., marriage, adultery, WTD, death, murder, alternative lifestyles, scheming in business, rape, etc.)
How the viewing audience perceives/receives these events is dependent on the writing/presentation.
I’m hopeful for more ‘fleshed-out’ s/ls that will allow viewers to engage/go beyond the obvious making ALL of our remaining soaps “must see tv”.
(I digressed – Apologies to all.)

Why doesn’t cbs put there emblem in the middle of the tv screen to remind me. Uhg I didn’t mind the emblem in the botton right but gezz now its distracting. Oh well wanted to bitch

  • diana

Hi Chrisann, I wish DAYS would take your approach to the gay storyline .. accept that some people DO have a problem with it and it doesn’t necessarily make them an “ignorant homophobic bigot”. I don’t mind gay characters on the soap, I like Sonny and I like Will. But it offends me, as a viewer, to be insulted and called names because I’m not ready to “embrace” this lifestyle. That’s what the show is doing when it calls characters like Lucas a “bigot”. It’s WAY heavy-handed and offensive. My mom has quit watching after 50 years. Of course, they don’t care about the older viewers anyway. :(

  • Kayla Rae

I agree with you, Jay, it would be interesting to see Days go more in-depth regarding Lucas’ problems with his son being gay. I’d love to see such a story develop. And, yes, Brad, it does look like there is going to be a storyline centering around Caroline’s recently-appearing dementia. That should be very interesting.

I can’t wait for Stefano to return…and Eileen Davidson! I’m glad Melanie is gone…she bored me. I don’t mind Madison exiting either. I do miss Jack and Carrie though.

  • Kayla Rae

Diana, discrimination of others based upon their gender, sexual orientation, race, age, species, etc. simply defies the boundaries of true compassion. If you are “not comfortable” with the fact that many individuals happen to be homosexual, then may I suggest that you pursue professional counseling to help you understand what deep-seated issues you are harboring which causes you to hold such harmful feelings.

  • Kayla Rae

I too adore the Sami/EJ storylines on Days…always intriguing! Great acting between these two!

  • diana

@KaylaRae, you forgot to mention discrimination of others based on their religion. Because you seem to have a problem being tolerant of people who are against homosexuality because of their religious beliefs. There are millions of us, including a gay man I know who has chosen celebacy of his own accord! Because HE believes gay sex is wrong! He wrote a book if you care to read it. “Out of a Far Country”, google it.

  • John

Someone will always be offended by something but I thinks there’s a big difference between being unaccepting and being labeled a bigot. I guess its what you do with it. Heck, there are still many today who haven’t accepted African Americans! Gay acceptance is relatively new in light of that. In a perfect world we’d all live in peace and harmony but, sadly, this is far from a perfect world.

  • Mike

You know I noticed a trend with this blog. Every week we chat about Y&R, Days, and GH. No one ever really brings up B&B, yet it’s the second highest rated soap. Just read back from here and I think I saw one or two mentions related to numbers but no talk about great they are, bad they are, controversial storylines, nothing. Interesting.

I joined this blog just about when Ron/Frank took over at GH. I remember how so many folks were just not liking what they were seeing on GH. I was one who started again due to the OLTL team takeover and loved it instantly. So many negative comments on this blog about the change, sometimes I wouldn’t post or read.

It amazes me how now it’s just about 98% LOVE for GH!! With the absence of…..hush my mouth.

Thank you Ron and Frank! Even though I also miss OLTL and have some great memories to cherish, I have the same LOVE for GH as I had for OLTL in just the six months this team has been at the helm.

And we know what they can do!!!!

  • LynTX

Current ratings are up at SON. All soaps gained viewers with exception of GH (did gain 7k in ‘men’ demo). Details should be at this site soon.

(ps. I know not popular but do miss …. posts. Although no ‘love for GH’, did bring up interesting facts on genre, overall.)

  • Chrisann D

Mike, I started watching GH again (watched it years back when I had more free time to do so) when it was announced the OLTL and AMC were going to be canceled and truthfully I love GH now as much as I did OLTL. I am happy to hear that at least 3 soaps went up in viewership…just wish GH did also. I think with Richard not posting it has been more positive BUT I didn’t mind his posting his dislike for GH and the writers it just was the way he thought he was always right and talked down to people. He just had a way of pushing peoples buttons I guess. I guess a few of us pushed his buttons too!

  • Chrisann D

Diana, Hi again. I get that because of your “faith” that it makes it hard for you to watch DOOL but premarital sex of any form is against the Catholic faith too….doesn’t that make it hard to watch almost any show? Just wondering…..not being a smart *** or anything.

  • Timothy

When does Jill Farren Phelps’ stuff start airing on Y.R.? Why do soaps recycle losers like JFP?

  • JayTN

Timothy…I don’t remember the exact date, but the Phelps/Griffith era begins airing in mid-October.

It is important to remember that Phelps is just the executive producer, it is Josh Griffith who is the new (old) head writer. While producers do have input into casting, hirings/firings and storylines, it is ultimately Griffith who will be blamed if the storylines fail and the ratings continue to decline.

  • diana

@Chrisann, LOL,good point, and you’re right, soap characters are pretty promiscuous .. lots of bed-hopping, that’s why I don’t have any Christian friends who watch (but they will watch Dancing with the Stars, which has skimpy costumes and sexual moves .. NCIS, which is violent .. let’s face it, we all have our “guilty pleasures” .. for me, it’s soaps). For me, the difference with other soap “sins”, we are ALLOWED to think they are wrong. Nobody on the show is browbeating us and saying “If you think there’s anything wrong with Sami sleeping with Rafe, EJ and Lucas all in the same day, then you’re just a BIGOT!” Do you see what my problem is? :)
