TV Ratings Saturday: College Football: Wisconsin/Nebraska Triumphs Over Texas/Oklahoma State

Due to the nature of live sports programming the ratings for ABC & FOX ( College Football)  are approximate and subject to more than the typical adjustments in the final numbers.

ABC was number one last night with adults 18-49, but CBS won with total viewers.

On ABC, Saturday Night College Football  (Wisconsin at Nebraska) scored a preliminary 1.2 adults 18-49 rating, down from last week's 1.8 preliminary rating.

On FOX, Saturday Night College Football  (Texas at Oklahoma State) notched a preliminary 1.1 adults 18-49 rating.

On CBS, a new season of 48 Hours  premiered to a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating.

Definitions:

Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings, including demographics, are available at approximately 11 AM (ET) the day after telecast, and are released to subscribing customers daily. These data, from the National People Meter sample, are strictly time-period information, based on the normal broadcast network feed, and include all programming on the affiliated stations, sometimes including network programming, sometimes not. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. For example, with a World Series game, Fast Affiliate Ratings would include whatever aired from 8-11PM on affiliates in the Pacific Time Zone, following the live baseball game, but not game coverage that begins at 5PM PT. The same would be true of Presidential debates as well as live award shows and breaking news reports.

Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.

Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. (See also, Rating, which represents tuning or viewing as a percent of the entire population being measured.)

Time Shifted Viewing – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day (Live+SD) include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

    Correction needed: This is the season premiere of 48 Hours and they have dropped “Mystery” from the title of the series.

    For what it’s worth, these FOX numbers are somewhat unreliable, since they’re only measured until 10:00 and the game went until 11:30.

    Wow! Not many people watching Saturday. The HIGHEST rated show scored a 1.2 demo, about 4 mill watching.

    Right now there is NO show that makes me run home to watch, not on any day of the week.

    I watched the end of the Texas football game. But I hadn’t seen Vegas and Hawaii 5-0 so I went back and forth and watch all I could.

    Hawaii Five O’s ratings in all categories was better than Revolutions!!!!!

    Would love to see if a show like The Voice or DWTS could air an original episode on Saturday and get a good audience.

    Compared to repeats, possibly. Compared to what it could get on a regular weeknight, absolutely not.

    The second cycle of DWTS aired Thursday/Fridy and the Friday airings only pulled 70% of the ratings that the Thursday shows did. For comparison, during each of the next five cycles, which aired during the week, the second day averaged 86-90% of the first day’s ratings.

    There’s a reason networks aren’t aggressively programming the night.

    Sports work (the five national broadcast/basic cable college football games averaged a 6.2 last week, which is roughly what Monday Night Football got), but even then, sports tend to perform better during the daytime than during primetime.

    Saturday Night is the time you should watch Svengoolie on ME-TV.

    People are watching their TV on Saturday night, but they just don’t care for the network stuff. They’d enjoying their netflix, videogames and DVR.

    I don’t get why college football demands so much cash for their games when their ratings are rather unspectacular.

    You sort of answered your question earlier. College football is extremely valuable as a package deal (i.e. big conferences). That’s why Newscorp forked out so much money years ago to form the Big Ten Network (BTN), the SEC got a huge sweetheart deal with ESPN to form the SEC Network, and the University of Texas formed its own network with ESPN called The Longhorn Network. Actually, all of this goes way back to Notre Dame forming its own deal with NBC.

    But like you said earlier; most of the games are watched during the daytime, and most of the games are played then as well, with the exception of the big SEC games and the west coast games in Arizona since they play in the desert and want to avoid the heat.
