ABC's rookie dramas Last Resort premiered with just a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating last Thursday at 8pm, and 666 Park Avenue started with just a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating on Sunday night. Because of that, they're both more likely to be canceled than renewed by May, 2013.

Why are Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue in more danger than Scandal, Castle and Private Practice which had similar ratings last week?

Veteran shows that are syndicated or in range of syndication like Castle and Private Practice get cut a lot of slack with their ratings. And sophomore shows like Scandal get cut at least a *little* more slack than rookies. That's not to say that all three of those veteran shows are in good shape for another season, just that after one week, I'm not ready to put any of them in danger.

This is just the first week for ABC's 2012-13 shows, more ratings information will likely cause many changes to these predictions in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Shouldn’t The Middle be 5 smiles?
0.95 rating and has syndication deal. The only knock is its a WB studio.
i guess its just semantics, since its a slam dunk for renewal.

Goodbye Last Resort (ABC). I might watch you as a Last Resort. I have been an action movie/tv guy for 50+ years but this show can’t last. I felt like I was wading through mud on the second episode. To boring.

  • Allison

This is stupid. How can you gauge this based on two episodes for LR and one for 666 ? Give it no credence. Talk to me in a month. They still would have to fill the hole with something and the advertisers aren’t going to like getting tossed to a rerun. Come on. Seriously, how can you go so far out on a limb and make these predictions?? People haven’t decided what they like yet. Too many good shows all on the same night(s), Mondays, Thursdays, etc. I DVR like crazy.

While I think Last Resort is an interesting show, I hope 666 Park Avenue survives also. Both have a talented casts and good writers. Then again so did Prime Suspect.

  • Kris

Shocks me to hear everyone talking about how “brilliant” Last Resort was. I found it be rather generic and lacking of substance. Maybe I’m just spoiled by the FAR superior “Homeland”. Will be interested to see how “Nashville” does on Wed. If it does well, I could see ABC moving it to Sunday’s at 10. Seems like it would fit well with OUAT and Revenge.

  • Ann

Looking forward to Body of Proof returning.

  • Angela Garrett

“Last Resort” is a brilliant show, and you know it ABC! Take a chance on it. Shows don’t get a fair trial anymore. It’s crazy! Companies don’t dump new hires after a few months just because they don’t set the world on fire compared to the veteran employees. That would be a waste of time, training and talent. Networks, stop being so fickle and trust your instincts. When you have a good product give it a minute – folks will catch on.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED 666 PARK AVENUE. BEST NEW SHOW

  • Antonio

In its second episode Last Resort went from a 2.2 to a 1.9 rating. Against Big Bang Theory and X Factor that’s pretty good. If it can hold at 1.9/1.8

  • Dani

I pray ABC does not cancel Scandal I love that show, my other favorites are Grey’s Anatomy and Modern Family. I tried both 666 and Last Resort and I fell asleep on 666 (it didn’t pull me in), but Last Resort really seems promising I hope they give it a shot. I used to watch Private Practice but grew bored with it after last season.

ABC knows what it did to have viewership down so badly!!!

  • Jason

Are you freaking kidding me! Last Resort is an amazing show! We finally get a show that’s intelligent and action packed, and it’s likely to be cancelled! I swear I’m turning off ABC forever if that happens. They can sit with NBC and rot…

  • BLETSU FATSAMATTA

Last Resort has an interesting premise and fewer production costs than “Terra Nova”, the show it reminds me of–I’m interested in the characters and the intrigue can take you off the island back to DC and surrounds in a heartbeat, they need to move the show to a place where it can compete better.

“666″ is a network trying to do “American Horror Story” and doing just fine at it–the show if cancelled needs to move to cable where it will need 1/3 the demographic to succeed for eons, I’m all for a move if that comes up.

  • MrK

I wonder how well the Last Resort would do if it was aired on Monday or Tuesday. I watch it on HULU because Thursday is ABC night.

  • MrK

I meant not an ABC night!

  • Noell

I want Last Resort to continue! The show is different and awesome! ABC, keep up with the good job and give it a chance!

  • angel

    But I like 666 park avenue. >:(

  • Sandy

SCANDAL is such a good show. Please don’t cancel it. PLEASE. Loving this show.

  • JBS

Grey and Private Practice have been written into the toilet. Scandal is struggling to try to be interesting at all. Shame on Shonda Rhimes for repeatedly sacrificing her characters so far from reality that we no longer care. She is also structure challenged. Unlikely situations as substitution for honest conflict with characters a flea could create true conflict with.)

Last Resort looks so very good, but as a viewer I’m sick and tired of investing in a show only to have the network cancel it.

Might have to turn to book for good entertainment.
